why does eric show up too late to save sookie from charles twining? can't remember.

Eric found out from Bill's data that Charles was sired by Hotrain's maker and so Eric tries to call Sookie to warn her about Charles. While Eric is on his way to Sookie, Charles strikes out and the bar full of men stake him.. Eric runs in worried about Sookie and wants to kill Charles but he is already dead. Do you find this valuable?
