Maryann's Rituals = Dionysian Mysteries

Here's a treat for all interested in this ancient stuff and cult of Dionysus: The Dionysian Mysteries were a ritual which used intoxicants and other trance inducing techniques, such as dance and music, to remove inhibitions and artificial societal constraints, liberating the individual to return to a more natural and primal state. It also afforded a degree of liberation for the marginals of Greek society: women, slaves and foreigners. More familiarity can be observed in the picture found in book Bill was reading in his flashback (that one with the names of Dionysus) and and the picture @ above-mentioned wiki site. The theme of a woman/meanad and a panther :) 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

I *LOVE* the Maenad character both in the TV Show and in Living Dead in Dallas. I like how they made her more human-ish on True Blood, but still kept her as menacing as in the book.In real life Maenads were probably not so evil. The last episode inspired me so much I wrote a blog on Dionysian Mysteries (and their Roman counterparts Bacchanals). It's mostly pictures of divine orgies throughout the centuries. (http://izabael.typepad.com/). I wish more people would discuss the Maenad with me! I love discussing Eric too, but everyone discusses him.......I want to start a Maenad fanclub ;-) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
