Rantings of A Book Snob
Jun 15 2009, 8:16 AM EDT
Now we all know that Mr. Ball's True Blood and Charlaine's Sookie Stackhouse Series are meant to be seperate entities but what individual who has read the beloved series can help to compare? Hence the invention of the category of book snob. One who has read the series and can't help but notice the differences. This thread will talk about each episode in season 2 after they have been shown. So WARNING SPOILERS FOR ALL THE BOOKS/SHOW! Let's begin shall we?Episode 1 Season 2 1. LAFAYETTE IS ALIVE!?! Okay I love me some Lafeyette as much as the next girl but come on ... he is sooooo dead! I guess it will be interesting to see Alan's take on his demise and now we have all the drama on who killed Miss May. 2. Eric .. all I have to say So as you can probably guess by my sign in, I am an Eric fan all the way so I have to ask myself ... what the heck are they doing to my beloved viking? First off, they have him in that hairdressers gown with what looks like foils for highlights? Soooo out of character in my book. Then they villianize him once again with having him the one kidnapping all these people along with Lafeyette and bitting that dude in the side/ thigh? Come on! As much as I adore Eric's bad *** nature Alan is making him out as the villian it seems to me. 3. Jessica As much as I was against her in the beginning, as I was to all non-book introduced characters, she is kind of growing on me. Plus anything that leads to Sookie/Bill drama is alright in my book. 4. Bill's Apology As much as a non-Bill fan I have become through 9 books the Sookie/Bill scenes still tug at my heart strings. He does always say the right things and his apology by the door was spot on. I was right their with Sookie on the "Damn you Bill Compton." (cont in next thread) 5 out of 6 found this valuable. 5. MaryAnnUgh I do not even want to go there. There is just soooo much wrong with them making a main character of the Menand in the first place. I guess it will give us something to keep guessing on. Finally my Moment that Make Me Scream At My Television Set: This week it was when Sookie asked if Bill was hiding anything else from her and after a dramatic pause he said no. That was when I basically screamed LIAR. Did you forget about the part where you were sent by the Queen to basically secure Sookie as an asset? Must have slipped your 104 yr old mind. Anyone else got any scream at your tv moments or notice any easter eggs. I caught the one where Jason is wearing a panther hat. I think he wore it is last season too. Alright your turn! 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

I have also read all 9 books and I totally agree about the Eric thing! I think they are making him into such a villain and in my book he isnt. I did like that he was highlighting his hair however cuz that brought some of Eric's silliness at least but I was so angry that he had the people locked up.I dont mind Maryann Because in the book her and Sam do eventually get together so if they want to twist it to make it like they were together before thats fine. I'm hoping more of Erics personality comes out. Especially in Dallas when he takes a bullet for her.(I hope they dont change that like they did with the longshadow staking) Do you find this valuable? |

1) I actually liked Lafayette a lot so i think its nice that they found a different character to kill off.2)as a fellow Eric fan i agree..what's with the track suit ==. he's a jeans/tee person. but anyways, don't worry to much about this and just see how AB molds Eric's character to his liking. 3)I like Jessica! I think she's a great addition! 5)Marryann. I'm don't like Marryann's character too much...but i don't mind either. It'll be fun to see the turn off events =] Moment that made you scream: hahah that part stuck out to be a lot the moment i heard it i was like OOOO when he said 'nothing'. ROFL! Dude I sooo screamed LAIR!!!! @ the television screen too! Explaining to my husband that I have no love for Bill because he did this and that. Anyway....... I dunno, I actaully laughed out loud when Eric came down with the foils in his hair. It helps to make him look arogant, which in the books at the start he seems to be. As to why he has these people locked up...I have no idea where AB is taking this, but I sooo expected Lafayette to be dead in that car. But I love his character in the series "Tip yo' waitress" Mary-Ann, who the hell knows.....is she the meanad? is she something else? I dunno, I guess we'll have to wait and see. I did like that he was highlighting his hair however cuz that brought some of Eric's silliness at least but I was so angry that he had the people locked up.Just a though: We never saw Eric 'at work' in the books, because Sook never witnessed that side of him. (the drawback of first person novels) But Eric is a Sheriff, his job - among other things - is to control the vamps in his area and also make sure they are safe. As he said, vampire attacks are on the rise. His methods may be barbaric, but he is a vampire. Bill tore apart and fed on the drainers in season one, and ripped the throat out of Uncle Bartlett. (and good for him!) It's just part of what they are. ("we don't have human values") The dungeon was horrifying I think, in part, because Lafayette is such an incredibly cool and sympathetic character, and we hated to see him like that. It's easy to forget that he is(was) a V dealer, and as such, he is considered an enemy to vampires. Eric answers to higher powers, he can't be having vamps in his Area drained and killed (like what happened to Bill and whatshisname Jason and his girl abducted and staked) I personally like seeing the scary side of the vamps. But I am confident we'll see more of the prancing peacock that is the Eric we know and love as the season continues. Hopefully we'll get to see Bill do his vampire thing, too, at some point! I was very intrigued by the Lafayette/dungeon scenario, and all throughout the episode I kept coming up with different situations of what the dungeon was- the bottom of the Fellowship church in Dallas? Some room in the maenad's house? And then Eric came down the steps... and dragged that guy down the stairs... and then tore his arm off... I really did yell at the TV, like literally, ha ha. My sister thought I was freaking out at the violence, and I explained that I was freaking out at the portrayal of Eric!!! Ugh- silly HBO, Eric is the actual romantic in the books, not Bill! However, that sex scene was H-O-T... 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

ok, its been forever since ive read book 2 but im not sure if some of my pages were stuck together or these parts were not in the books....1. jason...does he join the fellowship in the book?? 2. Jessica? And the other parts ive figured out...I was so shocked it wasnt lafayette! I cannot stand Bill (i guess its just from later in the books) And anything that shows more of eric i am for...just as long as when it comes to Dead to the world they keep everything exactly the same between sookie and eric! :) 1 out of 2 found this valuable. l love this thread! We all knew Eric was a Viking in his human life. That was in the books, right? Vikings have a barbaric history. I am not surprised, given that fact, that he could rip out the redneck's guts or tear his arm off. Did we really expect to only see the cool and sexy romantic Eric? However, he needs to check his threat sensor, because Lafayette had no part in Eddie's disappearance or death. They had a mutually beneficial relationship. I agree Bill is a LIAR!! But he did look a bit guilty when Sookie asked him if he was keeping anything else from her. Maybe AB will add that storyline in about the task the Queen sent him on, to woo Sookie, to get her to use her talent for them. This is why I prefer Eric. He has no hidden self with her: he tells her exactly what he wants or expects from her. To play Devil's Advocate for a second. Bill may have been sent to romance Sookie, but I think he genuinely fell in love with her. To jlayne: I just finished re-reading the book. No, Jason did not join the Fellowship in the book. I honestly don't remember Jessica in the books at all. After all, in the books, Eric, not Bill, killed Long Shadow, so he would have had no reason to make amends for his death. Therefore, he would not have had to 'turn" Jessica. I agree about Dead to the World. They need to keep the Eric/Sookie story intact. It's a favorite for alot of us. ;) and it's central to that book/Season 4. Do you find this valuable? |

I haven't read the books, so maybe I just don't know. I enjoy the arognats of Eric. I've ALWAYS fallen for the Bad Boys. I'm glad to know Lafayette is alive. I like his character. "Maryann" she's out for revenge, pay back or dominance. This is of course in my unread opinion. hjh

We ALL have to remember that the author of a book or series of books is NOT the screen writer. There are ALWAYS plot changes. While reading, one's imagination can run wild. Watching TV, we are influanced by the images we see and not the images we create when we are reading. Screen writers have to interpret what the novelist has written and transfer that to the screen. hjh

Im not really into the books because I think Charlaine is a juvenile writer, I have only read Dead to the World all the way through. But I dont find anything wrong with Eric in 2.1, I thought it was downright hilarious how he went meidival on that guy while he was getting his hair highlighted, and to me it just shows how hilariously vain Eric is. I didnt realize he was in a track suit unitl I saw stills, I would have prefered jeans but I can look over that. I just have to state how impressive Eric's scream of pain and fury was. That was some of the best and scariest pissed off vampire sound I have ever heard. Do you find this valuable? |

OK I actually liked seeing the villian side of Eric, just reminds you that he is indeed a vampire, not just some sexy seducer, LOL.Jessica I didnt like her much last season either thought she was a brat and wanted to smakc the hell out of her. Lafayette brava on keeping him alive however I am still trying to figure out how they are going to do the orgy scene since that is such a significant to the E/B/S love triangle. Maryanne ahhh I blow her off. Now I can't remember is Daphne in the book? Do you find this valuable? |

Is there anyone out there who wanted to throw up when Sookie said "God!@#$ you, Bill Compton, I love you? As someone who has read all 9 books embarrassingly more than once and LOVED everything AB did on season one there were a few things I just have to comment on-1) Eric with the highlights was pretty funny although I don't see him really doing that. Seems that would be below him-something that humans do. The violence-well that's totally part of who he is. We all know Eric can take care of business. Remember in season 1 when he comes to Merlottes and says something about all of you who have done us wrong-we know who you are- And then he looks right at that guy- 2) We love our Lafayette so we don't want him in the dungeon but more than likely the vamps don't have all the facts. He's not a drainer. Eddie was more than willing as a participant but that IS why he eventually got killed. 3) Love Marianne! How interesting of a character is the Maenad anyway? Even if she winds up NOT being a maenad Michelle Forbes plays an intoxicating character. Can't wait to see what she's up to. 4) The S/B sex scene was out there!! We've come to expect that. Stephen Moyer delivers Bill's lines with so much compassion we totally suspend disbelief- They had me until she delivers that line- I snorted out loud because it just was so cheesy-not even in a campy good way. I'm thinking that could have been a nod to Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With The Wind? In the books Sookie mentions how she feels like Scarlett sometimes- Oh yes Jessica- who doesn't love her?? She is the embodiment of the angry insecure teenager. I am glad they are giving her some depth and she's not trying to feed on Sookie- Sookie could use another girlfriend. On the highlight foil - I think he is using it because the silver will burn the ends off of his hair. This helps him change his appearance so as to be unrecognizable to the Dallas vamps. Just a guess. Do you find this valuable? |

After reading all of the books, came to the just opinion that Eric rules and Bill is just a weenie. The most intrigueing parts for me were the Eric/Sookie chase down... he is just relentless, and the "did we? didn't we?" Poor Eric... not to remember!!!! Ha! I see Sookie so much differently than she is being portrayed on the show. More spitfire... less "moony." Do you find this valuable? |
