Background: Have read all the books (most of them several times, BD only once -- I wanted to throw it across the room the entire time!) and have seen the movie a couple times.

Likes: Rob as Edward - I think he did a great job. The girl that played Alice was awesome. Jacob = <3

Dislikes: Kristen Stewart as Bella. She was pretty enough, but her acting just sucked! It felt like someone was reading her lines to her and she was just repeating them. The things they left out of the movie that I felt were crucial to the plot - but then again, this 'usually' (not always - see 'Stardust') happens with the film adaptations. The 'spider monkey' line... it was just stupid, IMO!

Eh's: The sparkling and the 'WTF' didn't really bother me. It was just SM's view of what her vampire would be like - everyone is entitled to their own imagination.

"...Are not for me. I feel Twilight, is a kids version of True. I don't like copycats!
Long live, Harris and Ball."
how on earth is twilight a copy of true blood?

Twilight: set in a rainy town
True: set it louisiana

Twilight: love story
True: more inticate tales of love, pain, and a world more progressed in technology than ours.

Twilight: freakin veggie vamps
True: ummm.....not so much

Twilight: the characters are more family oriented (i.e. the cullens, bella and her dad, jacob and his dad, the pack (family of a sort))
True: again.... not so much

there are too many differences to really put them all here.... i love both series. but i do not see how anyone could say that twilight is a ripoff of trueblood. both series are set in completely different areas, the characters are absolutely nothing alike and the stories have absolutely nothing in common except that they involve vampires.

and it was more of an obsession story than a love story
if you like the twilight saga books you need to read more. "

I love twilight. But, it makes me mad when people say that it's a series just for tweens. Women of all ages are reading the series and loving it. Some people say that they are not dark vampires. Well that isnot true. Take a look at Edward. Although he loves Bella, he wants to kill her. At least Bill doesn't want to kill Sookie. He's fighting that urge through the entire series. People have said that Edward is trying not to have sex with Bella. Edward wants, desperately, to have sex with her. But he can't because he'll kill her and he's trying not to do that. Plus, Edward, just like Bill, has killed many people in his past. Twilight has very dark undertones to it, if you look at it honestly. The TB vampires can just charm people and feed on them without killing them. The Twilight vampires just kill them. The Twilight books were never geared to tweens. I think they were, initially, geared to older teens. But, guess what, women in the 20's, 30's, 40's are reading and loving it. The media has it wrong when they say only tweens are watching. If you look at it honesty, Edward and Bill have a lot in common. Both are killers trying not to be killers.
If you read Midnight Sun on SM web site. When Sookie meets Edward in the science lab. Edward is thinking of how he could kill everyone in the science room and he's doing it in a very cold and calculating way.

I have also read both series of books and loved them both, for totally different reasons. I don't believe Twilight is actually a "teen" series, but there's not as much violence and/or sex as in SS so it is a little tamer. As far as the movies, that is yet to be seen, but so far it's been pretty tame as well.
I don't really see too many similarities, except maybe the love story. Bill and Sookie, Edward and Bella. I'm no teenager and I also love both series. The media always has a way of getting information wrong. They focus on the "teen/tween" population, whereas I speak to many women of all ages above 35 who love Twilight. Part of that too, I think, is all the craziness that surrounds Rob is usually (I said "usually") caused by younger fans. Not too many adult women chase him down the street or jump on him.

i watched the movie yesterday, it's been a while since i have seen it- I LOVE THIS MOVIE! it may not be as gritty & the author may have made certain changes to the traditional vampire characteristics, but I still love it. I love RP, have since when I 1st saw him in HP- he's the perfect EC. and I'll say it again, the baseball scene is my favorite. Do you find this valuable?

At least with the Twilight books being made into movies the characters have remained THE SAME in the transformation from page to screen. Unlike TB. Do you find this valuable?

ya (nodding head in agreement)- the producers didn't feel the need to alter the story. it's rather simple- millions of copies of the books were sold, obv it works.

Yes, well it's also a movie, not a weekly series. I like what Alan Ball has done with TB. It makes it interesting and makes you want to watch it every week. If it was exactly like the books, you'd know exactly what was going to happen each week. There wouldn't be any suspense. Do you find this valuable?

Okay dude seriously, they haven't remained the 'same'.
Emmett supposedly had black curly hair - where are the curls in the movie?
They never went to some field trip in a bus in the book.
In the movie, Bella and Edward's Biology teacher awards them a golden onion. [there was nothing like that in the book]
There was no one called Waylon in the book.

The list goes on!

I don't really like my vampires to sparkle in the sunlight. The books are bit to saccharine for my general tastes. I like my vampires classic..with fangs. Nothing about Twilight appeals to me in the least. It just seems like a lot of frustrated housewife wish fulfillment. Do you find this valuable?

I really just had to reply to this. The thing is that I love Vampire Books in general. I believe I began reading the genre in about 1995 or so. I've read some without the greatest plot and some that have left a remarkable place in my heart even though maybe the plot wasn't great but the characterization was unreal and I think that was what happened with Twilight. I too feel in love with it, as did evidently a large majority of people in the nation.I think sometimes when I lot of people like somethink there is a backlash. That is enevitiable. I'll be the first to agree that Catherine Hardwick just killed it and not in a good way. Robert Pattinson and the guy who played Jacob were the only memorable things to come out out that movie. That said. We are here to talk about True Blood, which my best friend tuned me on to. Luckily both the characterization and the plot are there with this series and I can say that I am a fan of what HBO has done with it. I got into a horrid discussion with the lady at the bookstore the other day because she said that the company ruined Ms. Harris "perfect" books. Well, the books are great, but the do kinda go a little slow for me after watching all the cliffhangers week in and out. I still love reading the books as I go along though. I'm glad I'm choosing to read as I watch. And I'm on team Eric. Nobody tell me how it ends. Do you find this valuable?

i think most of us have read plenty of vamp books and it just depends on what you like. some of us like the romantic side of vampires and other like the part that we have come to think of as their nature; blood drinking, lust, tormentation. twilight offers the Young Vampire life basically. most vampire stories where the vampire has lived as a vampire for like over a 100 yrs give us the nature of vampires that we love, but the vampires in Twilight are fairly young... i think thats why they are so different from Harris' vampires and Anne Rice's, etc. i think edward and bella are a little too strong on the love aspect... like... not many 17yr olds fall in love you know :) but its a nice change to get the views of a young vampire for a change. Yes, but don't forget, Edward is over 100 years old. He was turned when he was 17. So he's really not that young. Kind of makes you look at him differently, being that he fell for such a young girl. Carlisle is over 300 years old. I agree that most 17 year old girls don't fall in love like Bella did, or they do fall in and out very quickly. Do you find this valuable?

I like the books so much better than the movie so far...I will wait for the next twilight movie to come out on DVD the first one I bought on release night because I hadnt seen it and figured all copies would be gone the next couple of days...I read the books before seeing the movie...I just dont like the thought of girls falling in love in high school when they are 17 and "knowing" that their life will end if they are not with that person...I know some people that have been with the same person since they were 17 one friend...her husband beats her now...the other they are in a great awesome relationship with two kids and they are amazing people...I just dont think that 17 year olds have the emotional and mental capacity to get married and be with that one person....teenagers are fickle....its the truth...other than that....hate kristen stewart...she acts the same in every movie I have seen her in except Zathura...she actually showed emotion then...but now....she has no emotion especially in this movie...I love the woman who plays esme,,,,,saw her in Greys.....loved her as ava...brilliant actress...other than that,,,I hate teenagers....(I'm only 22) Do you find this valuable?

Well, you're right. Teenagers are very fickle, but it's only a fictional story so I guess we need to just go with it. After all, there are no vampires either. Or are there? lol Agree about KS, hated her acting. Hope it gets better. I have my tickets for the midnight show of New Moon on 11/19! didn't see Twilight in the theater, so this should be fun... "
THE BOOK on the other hand..loved the first three, last, totally sucked imo. either hate it or love it -shrug.
"
The first book, "Twilight": You might as well have watched the movie. And I already know this is going to piss some people off but I have to say it; Robert Pattinson wasn't attractive enough to play Edward if he was suppose to be all 'supermodel' gorgeous. BUT Taylor Lautner as Jacob WAS perfect casting and so was Ashley Greene as Alice.

The second book, "New Moon": Probably the best out of the series and the movie trailers look awesome. I'm looking forward to it, even though I KNOW there's going to be tweens behind me who have come back to the movies to quote EVERY WORD. Also looking forward to seeing what Bryce Dallas Howard does with the Victoria character. And how Dakota Fanning plays Jane.

The third book, "Eclipse": Alright but will be better when it comes to theaters.

The fouth book, "Breaking Dawn": Unless the film gives us what the book had promised in the first place then it's gonna suck.

(Oh, and for those who asked where I go to see movies for about $7? What the website says is that it's $6.50 for Adult Matinee before 6pm and it's $8.50 for an Adult Everning. That's at the Cinemark 22 in Lancaster, CA.)

Well of course this wouldn't be any fun if we all agreed on everything, would it? Twilight was a low-budget film and no one ever thought it would be as big as it turned out. Low budget included the makeup too. Which was pretty cheesy. imho, Robert Pattinson was perfect for the role, he's gorgeous and could be a super model and looks better in New Moon, if that's possible. Again, my opinion. Rosalie was supposed to be the most beautiful woman in the world and Nikki Reid did not fit the character as far as that goes.

New Moon will be great and hopefully so will Eclipse. I think there will be parts of BD that will difficult, but they're also saying the last 3 movies will be much darker than the books. wonder if that will affect the tweens opinion of the movies? Not happy about Rachelle being ousted, but we'll see how Bryce does in Eclipse. Dakota should be great. All in all, I'm excited. My favorite book was Twilight. Loved Alice and Taylor is wonderful as Jacob.
