Twilight, The Movie: Likes, Loves, Hates, & Ehs
Mar 23 2009, 12:21 AM EDT
Since the DVD was released and I was able to watch it with less distractions (first viewing involved a theater full of crooning, screaming, giggling pre-teen children) I thought I'd bring up a movie criticism discussion. POSSIBLE SPOILERS. I don't want to discuss the book here (there is a long thread for that already) but I figure I should state this for my frame of reference: Yes, I have read all 4 books. Twilight itself was my least favorite in the series. I find them juvenile and poorly written, but entertaining nonetheless. This is my version of a cheers/jeers post! I encourage replies to have the same format.... Likes: Any scene with Billy and Jacob. He was less scrawny than I remembered (from my first viewing) but still kid-brother-ish. Hopefully he's hitting the gym hard in preparation for the sequels. Any scene with the Cullen's cars. Laurent's dreadlocks. Victoria's lunacy/vengeful gaze. The soundtrack. Loves: Casting for Alice, Rosalie, Jasper, and Emmett. I thought they were perfect, and well acted. Okay, "better" acted. My favorite scene was when Alice gently pranced up to James and snapped his neck. Hates: Terrible make-up artistry. Really? Whiteface for vamps? That's original. Perhaps we could have blended the necks, ears, and hairlines a smidge? Also, EVERY character except Bella had blond highlights. When they showed a close up of Edwards black eyes, you could clearly see the edge of his cosmetic contact lenses. The direction & scene editing was awful. I started to think my dvd player was freezing up! I've seen better film editing on Youtube. Ehs: Dialogue between Edward and Bella. Felt forced. Perhaps Kevin Smith can direct the sequel(s) LOL. I really didn't care for the actress that played Bella. Her enunciation is awful, she has perhaps two facial expressions. She fell over her lines rather than acted them. 10 out of 11 found this valuable. Do you? |

Well the books were just okay. They were a bit slow for me I also wanted more "substance" to it. It just seemed to be slower then it really needed to be in parts. And Bella just "drove" me crazy I so hope my daughter is not going to be whinny like that:) The Movie was So so! Still don't get what all those girls have with that Robert boy (Cant stand the eyebrows) The movie seemed a bit slow to me too. Where they really could have added more to it that didn't. I couldn't stand the girl who played Bella too she just bugged me from the start. (Her facial expressions just seemed a bit over the top)Oh well still bought the movie set so I couldn't have hated to bad.:) Its funny though I only read the books to pass the time while I'm waiting for book 9! Which Needs to come out soon cause Im getting antsy. Do you find this valuable? |

I loved it! And I mean I really love love loved it.I liked what they did with the vampires' skin tones. To me, their complexions were only a little whiter than Bella and her Dad's, which are a typically Pac NW color of complexion. I live about three and a half hour's drive away. If you live here long enough and you're not a sunbather, you end up as white as a vampire. To illustrate, my daughter, my best friend and I all wear either the very palest or the second palest foundation colors, depending upon the line. Everything the people wore, the hairstyles, the way they tended to sometimes talk sort of like they're from CA, the vehicles the drove, everything was just like reality in that area. I'm sure I have to have been through Forks, but it's so small, if you blink really long, you'll miss it. I've been to LaPush, the beach they went to. The first time I saw the ocean was at LaPush and it was Sunset with the winter waves pink and crimson, crashing onto the shore, absolutely beautiful. Been to Port Angeles, i believe I've been to that bookstore Bella went to because it looked really familiar. That whole area is breathtakingly beautiful. I loved the acting, the storyline, the dialogue, the direction, all of it. I thought it was very romantic and so much about love. I've watched it three times and I highly recommend it. If you looked at only the center of their faces, the makeup was fine. But they didn't blend it well into hairlines or necklines. It made that one scene in TB where Eric's makeup was all effed up look like a Michaelangelo. I wear the palest foundation make-up, most of the year, too, so I know what you mean. But even though my complexion is almost identical to the makeup I wear, I still take effort to make sure it's blended as naturally as possible. And I'm not a professional movie makeup artist by a long shot :) Do you find this valuable? |

I hated the books i thought she was way to whiny and the relationship between edward and bella is to the point of obsession. Like i see her more with jacob than edward because you actually can see a relationship forming with them. It was very teeny. I'm kinda upset that i bought them haha. But im planning on reading the sookie stackhouse series they seem alot more like my type of books. About the movie i also can see where they did poor makeup jobs on the vampire and the contacts edward is wearing when he says there not contacts lol. I was laughing and saying i can see he has contacts. I didnt really like the girl either playing...but oh well. Haha. Do you find this valuable? |

Oh, I used to be a fan. Bought all the books and got increasingly annoyed with the prudishness. Its vampires goddammit, they're supposed to be sexy and bad! Some parts are incredibly beautiful and I love the werewolves but the Edward-Bella relationship is sugary and unrealistic. They're both too perfect. The movie I enjoyed, and I will probably go see New Moon, but after seeing True Blood and dipping into the CH books I have completely gone off the Meyerverse.

I also liked the movie i dont like the books just felt like no plot especially in the first one. And the only thing i even like about the books are the werewolves on parts they were in they were the most interesting haha. How many series has true blood been on i really want to read the books first then start watching maybe.

The actor who plays Jacob has added about 30lb of muscle. He still has kind of a baby face and he will need height enhancement.Remains to be seen but I may just wait and rent New Moon. As for Twilght the movie, I am normally disappointed by book-to-movie translations so I keep my expectations kind of low. I gave it an overall "not bad". Do you find this valuable? |

Yea i know he has he does still have a baby face like you saidbut i think alot of people would have been disappointed not 2 see him as jacob. I will probably see New Moon in theaters. Out of all the characters in the Twilight Saga i liked Jacob. I still didnt like the books very much. Do you find this valuable? |

"Yea i know he has he does still have a baby face like you saidWell, I have to say I'm totally obsessed with Twilight. I saw the movie first and just loved it, then read the books. I'm on Breaking Dawn now. I find Jacob to be a little annoying throughout the last 2 books. Edward is a dream. imo. Do you find this valuable? |

OK. Twilight the Movie has grown on me with every viewing. I hate to say it but I like that Pattinson kid as Edward. Not too hot about the Bella actor. She comes off the same in every movie I've seen her in. I didn't like the Rosalie actor either. Rosalie is supposed to be the most beautiful woman in the room. That wasn;t the case. I liked the actors who played the bad guys and the high school kids. I think the sexual tension is nice between edward and bella. I like stories about forbidden love -- no matter what.

Rob was great, showed his angst well. Liked Jacob too and the friends were good. I loved Alice. Do you find this valuable? |

Way too teeny for my likes. The make-up was just off. Pity that they don't start over with a version that true vampire lovers could "sink their teeth into". Sorry, 'bout that. I guess this is kind of the "G" rated version of the all the vampire series out there. I like my vamps to show a little fang. Do you find this valuable? |

I have not read the books.I get WAY picky about visuals - not even casting, but like production design etc. SO - I wanted to see the flick first, and THEN read the books. BUT - the movie sucked. It was like "The Craft" - but with vampires as the MsGuffin instead of witches. Now this being said - the craft came out when i was 13 - and I loved it, bought the soundtrack, and started reading every book on witchcraft I could get my hands on for a while. So If I were 13 NOW - I would probably have LOVED Twilight. But I'm too old, and too bitter now. And I like a vampire book to have some skankyness and steam. And they SHOULD NOT SPARKLE. That all being said - yes I will go see the sequel. I hear they got a new director. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

You should definitely read the books. They may not be skanky, but they are sweet and the love story is timeless in it's own way. I've heard of a few 13 and 14 year olds that didn't get the story. Because they were looking for fangs and they got love instead.

I thought the books were horribly written grammatical errorsand it was more of an obsession story than a love story if you like the twilight saga books you need to read more. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
