"Maharet, do shapeshifters really exist?"Well, one "take" on the idea is this whole group of people out there, who believe they are something called Otherkin. Otherkin are people who feel they are dragons, fairies, animals, half-angels, and whatnot that are trapped in "human" bodies.. or, they're descendants of such creatures. ------------------------------------------ From the Wikipedia entry: Otherkin are a subculture of people, primarily Internet-based, who identify in some way as other than human. Otherkin often believe themselves to be mythological or legendary creatures, explaining their beliefs through reincarnation, having a nonhuman soul, ancestry, or symbolic metaphor. Common creatures otherkin identify as include angels, demons, dragons, elves, extra-terrestrials, fairies, kitsunes, lycanthropes, and vampires, among others. ------------------------------------------ Personally, I thought a lot of these people are just insecure of themselves and are clinging to this "other" persona rather than deal with their own humanity. That, and there are a bazillion role-playing games on the internet, which can feed and fester this alternate persona idea. If you don't like who you are, you can hide behind a Level 407 Blue Nympho Druid Fairy Elf. That being said (and yes I have and do play some of those games, I'm an oldschool MUDder) I can see how this can be an attractive option for a lot of people. I felt strongly about this until recently. If I believe in some of these creatures (which I do believe in Angels, Fairies, Demons, and spiritual animals, in some fashion).... doesn't that lend half the belief criteria to the Otherkin theory? And also, if I can support a transsexual person in their feelings that they are a woman who was born with a man's body, or vice versa, shouldn't I also lend the same sympathy and respect to someone who feels they are an Angel trapped in a human's body? 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Maharet, what are the differences between someone that is a born witch or someone that has just started to learn the craft later in life? I've always been interested in this subject but had no one to ask.

It's a very difficult and existential question. So I guess my answer for now is, "I think so... but I still doubt a LOT of people who claim such." Especially if they are avid World-of-Warcraft players, or are obsessed with Anime, too. Not trying to insult everyone who's into those things, just saying that the line between fantasy and reality can get blurred. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Maharet, what are the differences between someone that is a born witch or someone that has just started to learn the craft later in life? I've always been interested in this subject but had no one to ask."To some extent, I feel that everyone who is drawn eventually to the Craft was born with it in some way. And some people who are born that way never grasp or develop their talents! I don't think being born into it or not makes you better or worse... you may just have some more challenges to face, and some more barriers to break down. But what people usually mean with that is that their family actively practiced the Craft (I hate that word, practice lol... my doctor practices... when is he going to get good!?) and they learned directly from them. This is called Family Traditional, or Fam. Trad. for short. There are some lines of Fam. Trad. that are very particular with their genealogy and will not let you use their name without proof of lineage (e.g. British Family Traditional). Others are just describing that their family kept up their history and their culture. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

In my case, I thought I was a convert. I thought I was the only person I knew, let alone only person in my family, who felt the way I did about magic, spirituality, and Witchcraft. When I "came out of the broom closet" to my family, it turns out that they mostly agreed with me, they just didn't call it Witchcraft. They called it "intuition" or "psychic sense" or "ESP". Then we found out that my great-great grandmother was Strega, an Italian Witch. My grandfather remembered some of the things she did... but my grandfather was an only child and in the old Strega days, you didn't teach the boys. So until we got to talking, we never knew. Then we found some magickal tools and jewelry that were family heirlooms through our French side. They are very obviously "witch-y" things. We had a few people look at them... jewelers and other Witches and Psychics... all of them said they were "Witch Items." So apparently my French ancestors were magickal, too.So I could say that I am a Born Witch, but since I have to rebuild all that culture and knowledge, I don't feel comfortable with it. I'm working hard so that my children (someday) can. :D There's nothing wrong with converting or coming to the Craft later in life. You just may have some more challenges to face, or some more barriers to break down. For instance, imagine if as a child you were never told NOT to talk to your imaginary friends! Or that when you saw fairies or ghosties or monsters under the bed, you were taught how to talk to them and not be afraid of them... rather than being told you were silly and imaginative? Society, education, and growing up puts a lot of obstacles in our spiritual path. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Thank you for the info. Do you have any books that you would recommend that I could read on the different types of witches?"There are so many books out there now, it is hard to narrow down. Once you start studying, you'll never stop. I've been actively practicing for over 12 years now... inactively even longer... and I'm sure Morgaine who is up to 27 years I think she said... probably still reads everything she can and still finds things to "learn!" Some titles about history & some different branches of the Craft: Hereditary Witchcraft by Raven Grimassi The Truth About Witchcraft Today by Scott Cunningham The Triumph of the Moon: A History of Modern Witchcraft by Ronald Hutton Goddess Worship: Witchcraft and NeoPaganism by Craig Hawkins Gypsy Witchcraft & Magick by Raymond Buckland Green Witchcraft by Ann Moura Some titles anyone interested in Wicca or the Craft should probably read: Drawing Down the Moon by Margot Adler The Spiral Dance by Starhawk Book of Shadows by Phyllis Currott Everyday Magick by Dorothy Morrisson I strongly believe that there are no "bad" books. (Though there may be some that are poorly written!) I say this because even if you read a book, and find it full of hogwash and nonsense, or you totally disagree with it... it still made you think. It still gave you a list of things you disagree with. So my advice is read everything you can get your hands on... keep what makes sense, and put the rest aside. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Hi Maharet- I have a TB question. This may have been addressed on other threads & posts and I tried to read as much as I could but I haven't seen the subject yet. It is about the season final episode. When Bill feel to his knees in the graveyard daylight and saw our dear Sookie unconscious the camera zoomed to his eyes. Then we see an unconscious Sookie open her eyes abruptly and she went for the shovel. Did Bill infuse her with his or some kind of energy at that moment? To me it appeared that there wa some kind of transference, But I haven't read anyone mentioning it. I haven't read the books (I just purchesed the set recently) yet and am hesitant to because I love Bill and I have read in posts he is not portrayed to well, especially in his treatment of Sookie. I LOVE their HBO relationship and don't want to spoil it for myself. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Hi Maharet- I have a TB question.Yes I think there was some sort of energy transfer, or perhaps telepathic alert that he gave his last mustered boost of strength to help save her. I presume that the writers are saying this was possible because she's had his blood, and through that they have a bond of sorts. In the books, it's not a full blood bond, that takes more "transfers," but its definitely Something. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I see that you have a metaphysical shop, is there any chance that you have a website for it, and if not, will you eventually get a link posted on here. I've always found the supernatural not only fascinating, but kinda cool. Also could you recommend any books that are about witchcraft, not to make spells :p, but to gain more knowledge about how, why, when, and where witchcraft came about.

"Hi Maharet,I'll probably piss a lot of people off with this one. :D I would say no, there are not vampires in the exact sense that we know in True Blood. E.g., supernatural beings with great strength who are allergic to garlic and sunlight, who drink blood to sustain themselves. There are people who enjoy the taste and consumption of blood... Personally I like the taste of my own (when I get a small cut or scratch) but the idea of ingesting someone else's blood kinda creeps me out. (I have a background in foodservice and consuming anything raw grosses me out LOL) There are people who like to roleplay the idea of being a Vampire, they may or may not be "Goth," also. And there are what we call Psychic Vampires. Psychic Vampires either knowingly or unknowingly drain people of their mental and physical energy. It's a complicated issue and can be very harmful or at least very annoying to the people around them. If the Psy-Vamp is aware of his or her condition, he or she can control the draining so that it doesn't affect the people around them. It can be useful, too, if used responsibly. If a person is feeling tired or under-the-weather and really needs to get something accomplished... he or she can "borrow" a bit of energy from nearby, healthy donors. My old boss used to do this at work... at least 3/4 of our employees were 16-18 year olds with boundless energy who pretty much did nothing at work. My boss was in her late 40s/early 50s and she seemed to always have the "get-up-and-go" at work, constantly moving and always busy. She would on occasion borrow energy from the youngin's, and it would work doubly because her energetic approach was then contagious and people around her would get off their butts and work! 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Maharet, On the subject of children, I'd like to ask about my daughter.Between the ages of 11 & 13, my daughter would "see" a woman in one of the homes we lived in. I was apparently the only person she felt comfortable sharing this with. I asked her some questions (Such as, are you afraid of her? Has she spoken to you? Do you feel like she wants anything from you? Where do you see her? Things of that nature. I didn't "freak out" or anything like that! Rather, I was mostly intrigued. I had felt when she was small, around 18 mos.,that she had someone that she interacted with. To this day, I believe that person was my maternal grandmother who passed away when she was 16 mos. old). With the woman she told me about, she said that she wasn't afraid & that the woman was an older lady who just seemed to go about her daily rituals in the bathroom & her bedroom, such as brushing her hair, putting in her teeth, getting dressed (she never saw her unclothed), putting on powder, perfume, etc. in the mornings when she was getting ready for school. I just told her that if she wanted to talk about her any time to just come to me again. We had purchased the house from my father's cousin, and years later I told my mother what she had told me. She was astonished; she said that his wife had said the house was haunted by her mother-in-law. My daughter's room had been her room. My daughter and I are Christians, but have always been open to trying to understand others beliefs. She's since told me she's seen others. I've never "seen" anyone, but every now & then I do see shadows that seem like people passing by. I've also heard music playing that has no words, but to the point where I would get up to turn it off & nothing would be on. I don't get up any more since it's gone on most of my life. Do you believe that these kinds of things can be indicative of a Craft past? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"I'll probably piss a lot of people off with this one. :DI sure would love to be able to learn how to do that! When I watched the HBO special, i think it was "A New Type", one of the gals introduced herself as a psychic vampire. I was fascinated because I have never heard of such a thing before. I will have to try and do some research. I wonder how the person from whom they are borrowing really feels it? I have been so fascinated by anything supernatural or other-worldly, but can't seem to open my mind to energy transferrance, presence of spirits, aura viewing, or even calling a circle. I would love to learn more about Wicca and/or witchcraft, but feel like I won't ever feel anything. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

What actually is the difference between paganism, Wicca, and witchcraft? I have several books, some by the authors you mentioned above, as well as some on crystal magic and candle magic. And would you say most practitioners are solo or part of a coven?

My daughter's room had been her room.First off, I feel strongly that you do not have to abandon your Christian beliefs to also believe in spirits, ghosts, and otherwordly beings. And I think its awesome that you are open to considering other things but still feel comfortable in your path! There are a couple facets to answering this question. One, being that to practice the Craft, you don't necessarily have to change your religion. Wicca is a religion. Paganism is a religion. The Craft is more ... a culture. Or a way of life. There are Christian Witches. There are even Catholic Witches. It all depends on what *you* are open to and relate to. Another, yes, that could be indicative of a past life in the Craft, or, that magickal or spiritual activity occured in the house previously. Or... that the house contains a point of energy where paranormal things are inclined to happen, like a fault line does to earthquakes, these spots seem more active with that sort of energy. Another facet, is that there is an entire realm of Metaphysics that includes AND goes beyond actual Witchcraft. There are other types or ideas about Magick and Spirituality. For example, there are Energy Beings and Angels and Spirit Guides and Light Beings and Universal Consciousness. It's all different, and all the same. What I call a spell, another person will call a prayer. What I call a Spirit Guide, another person will call a Guardian Angel. Who's right? It doesn't matter. All that matters in the end is that we are trying to better ourselves and learn. From strictly a paranormal standpoint... it is very common for children entering puberty to attract or even cause increased "occurances." Something in the hormones! I think its AWESOME that you encourage and interact with your daughter on this. And its great that you got vindication later that someone else experienced similar things in the same place. I have a few stories like that myself! 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

That's not even ethical to suggest that someone endanger themselves to get something like that!) 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
