Reading Material for the Off Season...
Nov 20 2008, 6:46 PM EST | Post edited: Nov 20 2008, 6:46 PM EST
Since the next Southern Vampire book is not coming out until May of 2009, I would like to start must read list for those just starting their own foray into the Urban Fantasy genre.

PLEASE NOTE: Their is a big difference between Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy, and Fantasy.

If you want to add to the list, PLEASE STATE what genre it is.

--Urban Fantasy--

I recommend the follow authors:

Kim Harrison, an excellent author of the Rachel Morgan series. Her world is as unique as the Sookieverse, but it is more indepth with witches and the magic itself. Vampires (both living and undead). Werewolves and the Fae.... and don't forget Jenks the pixie.

Laurell K Hamilton...the Mother of Urban Fantasy. I know, I know... everyone talks about Anne Rice and the modern vampire, but LKH honestly created the first world in which all the things that go bump in the night are real...in fact, they might be your next door neighbor. The first 5 books of the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series are excellent. Unfortunately, the second she added sex to the mix, it started going downhill... *le sigh*

Patricia Briggs-- I haven't read her pure fantasy novels but her Mercedes Thompson series is as good as the Southern Vampire series. Her heroine is smart, non-whiny, and can take care of herself.

--PARANORMAL ROMANCE--

Okay... we've all got our guilty pleasures... here's one of mine...

Christine Feehan and her Dark series... The newest ones are eh...okay, but her early ones are good and mooshy. If you want a romance where they stay together f-o-r-e-v-e-r... then these are the books for you.

I will add more to the list when I get home from work...

Enjoy...

I needed this info...I've read 16 books in two months in the paranormal romance catagory...I see no signs of slowing unless I run out of material. Looks like I won't :)

I'll post my faves tomorrow.

Is that the last one? If so, then no. It's still in its first printing I beleive so it was hardbound.

Almost finished with Kim Harrison's Dead Witch Walking... Guess I'll read that series, since I'm caught up on Southern Vamp... Another good one is Nora Roberts' Blood Brothers Trilogy... And of course if you haven't read Twilight I highly recommend it. Do you find this valuable?

I have to agree with Kim Harrison, she is my favorite author!

Sorry, I am not sure of the difference in Urban Fantasy or Paranormal, half the time I find these authors in Sci Fi, but JR Ward and her brotherhood series is fanglishous!

And I wasn't too sure about The Twilight Series because it is considered young adult, but I am on book Two and really like it.

Jenna Black (Guardians of the Night), Cameron Dean (Candace Steele), Keri Arthur (Riley Jenson Series), Lynn Viehl (The Darkyn Series), Lara Adrian (Midnight Breed Series), Jeaniene Frost (The Night Huntress Series).

I really do do other things besides read, but reading and watchin True Blood are my favorite things to do!

I'm gonna have to find these others... I have no life.... I live vicariously through tv and books LOL!! I picked up Twilight not realizing it was young adult, read the whole thing in under a day. It was so pure, made for a nice escape...

Yup...I'm in for about $150 in books now. That one was like $18.

I made friends with someone on this site a while back, and now we send each other copies of vampire books we haven't read yet. It's like our own little Amazon book club, and a hell of a lot cheaper :)

Keri Arthur (Riley Jenson Series)"
Yes! Keri Arthur is awesome! I'm going to the bookstore as soon as I leave my office for the second Riley book.

I also just read One Bite With A Stranger (The Others, Book 6): Christine Warren...so GREAT! Lots of HOT graphic vampire sex!

Ok. I had to get my two cents in. Being an addicted reader I will list my favorites. Not only do I recommend these, I own all of them and have read each series at least 3 times. (I said I was addicted). Some may be repeats of others listed but that is ok because in my opinion, they can't be said enough!!!!

Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter Series! Oh my! 17 books strong and still leaves you begging for more!

Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake Series. Book 17 due out in June 2009. Towards the middle of the series the sex got pretty ridiculous, but the story is GREAT!

Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan Series. One word: Magnificient!!!

Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld Series! Let's hear it for Elaina!

Raven Hart's Savannah Vampire Series. I am re-reading this now. Good stuff!

Christina Dodd's Darkness Chosen Series (Shapeshifters)

Eileen Wilks Series(Werewolf)

J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood Series. YUMMY!

Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark Series (Paranormal Erotica) but excellent story.

Lori Handeland's 'Moon' Series (Werewolf) This is the only series of books that actually scared me.

Keri Arthur's Riley Jensen series

Gena Showalter's Lords of the Underworld Series

Christine Warren's Novels of the Others Series

I highly recommend all of these.

*chuckles to herself* You guys are lucky you just started your collections then. Me, I have 500+ books to my name, mostly paperback but some hardcovers when it was something I really wanted to read at release and each of them cost between $7 and $25 a pop...yeah, and my parents wondered why I could never save money once I started working in HS.

10 years later and nothing's changed.

I can't really recommend anything along the lines of CH's SVM, since they are honestly the first ever books to grace my shelves that don't fall under the fantasy or sci-fi genres. However, if people are looking for good reads I can gladly recommend my favorite authors.

Orson Scott Card - sci-fi:
The Ender Series. Starting book is Ender's Game. No romance, at least not until the 2nd book, Speaker for the Dead, but high quality reads. Dry witty humor throughout.

Pastwatch. Standalone book that features an alternate universe, namely what would the world be like if Columbus didn't discover the new world.

Raymond E. Feist - fantasy:
The Magician Series. Pretty much your standard medieval setting with magicians, but the kingdom is being invaded by a brutal enemy from another world. The interesting thing about this one is the cultural differences between the two sides which gets explored more as the series goes on.

Enchantment. This is a great standalone book, somewhat alternate universe, and it's a great love story. A modern man discovers an enchanted princess laying in the forest that he is destined to save, but at an unknown cost.

Fairy Tale. Standalone book that brings alive old Irish myths about fairies in the lives of a modern family. Darker tone than his other work, but I enjoyed it.

Timothy Zahn is also a great author, but the only stuff I've read of his is strictly Star-Wars related. Still highly recommended.

"LOVE Christine Warren!!!!!!!!!"
Christine Warren started off at a website called ellorascave (dot) com

In fact, MANY of todays hottest romance writers started off there...

Angela Knight, Mary Janice Davidson (the Undead and Unwed Series), Anya Bast... the list is pretty long...

Now with that said... the sex is pretty steamy on that site... you pay for your download (anywhere from $2.99 to $7.99 a story) but it's on your computer forever.

The genre the site created is called Romantica (Romance and Erotica combined)

I like to call it Penthouse Forum with a happy ending... LOL
