Dear Editor:

I am shocked and appalled that law enforcement in Louisiana has been so lax in investigating the hate crime in which 3 vampires and one human were murdered. Are vampires supposed to stand idly by while they are murdered in their homes? No one deserves to die that way.

As far as I have been able to discern, their only crime was going into a bar in their new neighborhood, where they were told they were not welcome and attacked by local hooligans. One can only assume that some of these same locals saw fit to firebomb their new home. From what I hear, the bar was full of people and they all knew each other. There are witnesses out there that know who murdered those people and yet not one suspect has been interrogated. If humans and vampires are to live in peace together, they need to know that human laws defend them as well.

The vampire community has shown great restraint in not retaliating for these senseless killings, but I doubt they will do so for very long if they don't see some results. The failure of law enforcement to act swiftly in this case is endangering both vampire and human lives.

Dear M. Swann,
Your letter speaks for many readers, Vampire and human vampire sympathizers alike. I interviewed Sookie Stackhouse because she is in a unique position to offer an honest answer whether Bon Temps law enforcement is turning a blind eye to violence against vampires. Ms. Stackhouse says she was no friend to the 3 Vampires killed, but believes "what was done to them was hideous". She says Sheriff Dearborne could not care less about violence against vampires, and while he probably has an idea who did it, she claims that he probably doesn't actually know, and plans to keep it that way. He's more focused on the murder of 3 human women, including Ms. Stackhouse's grandmother. Stackhouse says that she and her Vampire boyfriend, Bill Compton, do not condone vampire violence against human but "tit for tat" should not be the Official Story for Bon Temps law enforces.
Instead, they call upon the police to do their job and investigate the murders of the 3 and their Vamp-hag, as they are sometimes called, the young man who worked for the Medical Examiner. Many, like you, are distressed at the uneven application of "justice". We'll continue our investigation.
