I wanted to respond before this but on another board, things got ugly and I was involved so I'm ashamed. I'm an independent so I could not vote in the primaries however when Obama was selected, I was thrilled. And I was thrilled with his VP Elect, Joe Biden. I have known Joe since I was 20 and he will be a good addition. I was proud to be an American when it was called that Barack Obama was going to be our 44th President. The last eight years have been so destructive. I was proud that in spite of his multi-cultured background, people came out and voted in record numbers. The young finally turned their voice on, the Latinos and Hispanics came out, it's a moment in history that will be talked about and noted in history textbooks to come. The people spoke and it was amazing. I cried when they called Pennsylvania for Obama. I knew that it was just the beginning of the eventual outcome. Unfortunately, CA voting against Prop. 8 is disgraceful. I'm a white straight woman but come on....and Arkansas banned any gays from adopting. They should be called upon for their absolute disregard of human rights. But there were also bright spots such as Washington State allowing physician's to admit a overdose of medication to a terminally ill patient. If you have ever had someone in your life who has gone through that or experienced a close call, you may be able to understand. We have an uphill road (Bush, you're fired) but hopefully Obama along with his running mate and new cabinet will start making changes immediately. The wheels are turning as I speak. All I can say is Thank Goddess and Bless America. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

"I am a Republican. I am white. I am a woman. And I have NEVER voted along party lines. Right before the primary election, I was actually worried that I would have to choose between McCain and Clinton. As I was not a big McCain fan, I watched the Democratic primary and prayed that I would be given a real choice come election time. My prayers were answered in Obama. If the race would have been between Clinton and McCain, I don't think I would have voted. Anyway, on my way to work this morning I got tears in my eyes because it finally seems that maybe America has finally come around to the TRUTH that "RACE DOES NOT MATTER". I am tired of living in a world that makes RACE an issue and I think that America has finally taken steps to show the world that we are all "just people"."
Wow.
Thank you for sharing that. Heart felt!

And AMEN! I am so glad my children grew up colorblind, with integrated schools, classmates, friends, television shows --

And now my grandchildren will grow up in a world where anyone, anyone can truly become president!!!

I made calls to NC to get independent voters to get out and vote, plus nudge nudge consider Obama...
One guy is a slooooow drawl said "Ahm a Registered Republican" and I thought oh no, here it comes...
"And Ah have already voted for Obama, mah friends and family have voted Obama, Ah have talked it up till Ahm blue in the face! That woman! That woman! How dare they insult us with that woman!"

"I agree with everything that you said!! I am afraid though that in many peoples eyes Race does still matter! Not mine as I must tell you that I have never ever been that way! I live in Missouri (I call it Misery) and I am appalled at how the people are here. They make me sick and almost ashamed to live here. But I am sooo glad that I got to be a part of this History and am Proud to be an American. GoBama!!!! God Bless The USA!!!!"
Once they see how the world respects this man -- My Gosh, just go to the foreign newspapers and press sites, and see the headlines! Videos of people dancing in the streets and WAVING our flag, instead of the last 8 years of flagburning...

And they see that he is at least 3 steps ahead, because he so intelligent, clear thinking, and that his first 6 months are going to blow the socks off everyone... because he has already been planning for the past 3 months how to jump in and get going. His press conference today was WONDERFUL! Rumor has it they may end up with a two puppy situation, LOL!

I would love it if he had a weekly fireside chat to the American public like FDR used to do... Just to hear his eloquent, calm voice.

BUT at least there is the first step toward OPEN government

You can click onto a chart that gives the organizational structure of the Exec branch:
Starts at the top with "The President" right???

Nope.

Starts at the top with "The CONSTITUTION"
then "The President"
and down the line...
Oh Happy Day!

Glad you got out of that thread... what is the point? Historian, author of Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Lincoln, Doris Kearns Goodwin's assessment of Obama: That he is poised & positioned for greatness, like the great transformative presidents, Lincoln, FDR, LBJ, and the promise of JFK. These men handled moments of crisis with calm grace and firm leadership. Lincoln knew he was in an historic moment, and he seized it. The greater good was more important than self. And Obama has risen beyond politics to that greater good.

As she said last year: "The next president has to be able to express a sense of what America can be, what America has been in the past, and what it is not now. It has to be overarching; it cannot be just "we need this program and this program and this program."
"He or she has to remind us what made people come to this country in the first place -- the belief that here, as Lincoln famously said, we had formed a government "whose leading object is to elevate the condition of men -- to lift artificial weights from all shoulders; to clear the paths of laudable pursuit for all; to afford all an unfettered start and a fair chance in the race of life."

The first and the most difficult task for the new president will be to remind people what made America so special in the first place, to create an emotional desire on their part to bring our performance closer to that ideal, to make clear the wide array of artificial weights that still prevent far too many people from having a fair chance in the race of life, and then and only then to propose the legislative programs or executive actions that will address these shortcomings."

And in just a few days, our new President has already pointed us in that direction!

Let us all please stay unified in keeping on top of our government and support our new President!

I haven't felt this inspired since JFK. I despaired that McCain would win and I didn't know what to do. But the American people came through and saw through the bigotry & shallowness of the Republican Party. I cried too, as did most of my friends. This is a new beginning for the country, a climb from the quicksand to the sweet fresh air. Do you find this valuable?
