Favorite Vampire Mythos?
Nov 3 2008, 10:28 PM EST
Post your favorite of the vampire mythos and reasons why you like it the best.My favorite is the white wolf series of Vampire the Masquerade, I don't care so much for for requiem, but the Masquerade is amazing ^_^ I really enjoy it partially because I used to play the pencil and paper role player game. It is so addicting, really puts you in the vampire mood. Do you find this valuable?

I've always favored the Vampire Chronicles, myself. (Anne Rice) I relish the way she goes into such historic and architectural detail. Yea, it makes it wordy, but you really get drawn in to the world she creates. However, introducing True Blood got me hooked on the Sookie Stackhouse novels, and then a friend I met here suggested the Anita Blake novels (after I blew through all 8 SVS books and the short stories and was chomping at the bit! lol). I also just read Twilight (just the first one, though I have 1-4) so that I would be ready for the movie. I liked Twilight, but it's a tad juvenile for my taste. But I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, so juvenile isn't necessarily a bad thing. I loved the SVS books, which surprised me, being that I am such a Ricean purist! The only thing I don't like about Harris's mythology is the "vamps can't enter a house without permission" bit. I mean, it smacks of superstition, and if crosses don't work, neither should that. Also enjoying the Blake books... I'm not too thrilled with some of the were mythology in it (I just don't like how they change, its messy) but I adore the characters and the vamp mythology. The zombie bit took me aback at first, but I've gotten used to it. So while I am still true to my original favorite, Vampire Chronicles, I guess SVS is my #2 or tie, and Blake is my #3. Also, a side note, if you are the gaming type, Valve has been selling Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines for $10-20 USD if you are interested in tasting the world of Vampire the Masquerade from a video game perspective. It's not 100% true to the mythos, but its pretty close.

I don't really have a favorite. I like the diversity and imagination people can put into stories and ideas. It's great and wildly creative.I wanted to make a comment on the page itself, but didn't see an option. For those who haven't read the Anita Blake series-- or those who have for that matter-- there's another way for some of the vampires to "feed." It's really just a way of gathering energy and power, but still helps sustain life in a roundabout kind of way. Some of the more powerful vampires have their secondary powers that feed on the energy they put off. For instance: Jean-Claude can feed (even from a distance) on lust and sexual energy due to his incubi history (which is what he passes on to Anita as the "ardeur".), and Belle Mort, J-C's Sour de Sang, feeds on fear. It's one reason she always tortured the men and women in her bed. She fed on the fear she could instill in them, it was her secondary power. Also, Damian's "maker" could do similar. If I remember correctly, she was a rotting vampire and used THAT in bed to instill the fear and panic she did. ...Just thought I'd put in the side note. Do you find this valuable? |

My all time favorite is from the X-Files episode "Bad Blood" that guest stared a yet not so well known Luke Wilson. The episode is a stand alone story, told in retrospect from both Mulder's and Scully's POV's. Mulder thinks the culprit behind some cattle and human exsanguinations must be a bona fide vampire - Scully is thinking serial killer that has watched too many Dracula movies. After much hilarity and misunderstanding - It turns out to be a real vampire that has watched too many Dracula movies. As real vampires don't REALLY roll like that. TOO damn Funny. Red mercury that one was a good episode...I just recently seen that rerun for xfiles...my favorite movie of all time I'm getting older here when I say I enjoy the movie freight night with Chris sarandon...that's a great movie...it shows*well it actually doesn't show him dancing in the mirror*the vampires can't show up in mirrors takes affect in this movie...I have to say on a last note..that the main reason why we love true blood so much is...all of the myths are unfolded as such... myths!...a the fact that they are irresistible lOoking vampires men a women a best in bed...as well as they feed on us to survive...not bite us..a we turn automatically to one!...it's like vampires need us as much as we need them!...*my philosophy if you can't be one! Feed one!*
