From A MODERATOR: Why your thread was deleted
Oct 6 2008, 1:23 PM EDT | Post edited: Oct 6 2008, 1:23 PM EDT
Hey, y'all -

I've been trying to send a PM to each person whose thread was deleted but with upwards of 40 a day, I just can't any more. It's too much. Imagine what it would be like to navigate this forum with 40 more ambiguous threads since yesterday- there would be no way to have a dialog, or to find anything.

I know we're all excited about the show, and it's easy to just show up and start a new thread rather than doing a search for the right thread to make your post in. So if your thread was deleted, it was for one of the following reasons:

* There are already multiple threads on that subject. We have MANY threads on Bill, Eric, Sam, the killer, and assorted "I love this show" or "this show sucks" threads. New ones will be deleted.

* There was a Spoiler in the title or body that wasn't properly marked

* The title was non-descript ("OMG" tells people nothing about the content of the thread) or had so much punctuation that it messed up the thread (One or two ?? or !! maximum, please)

* It was outside the official thread for each episode. There will be ONE thread per episode posted just before the Preview of the show airs. Any additional threads that reference the episode will be deleted, even if it has replies on it, so please make sure you are in the right thread.

Sometimes your thread has simply been moved to the appropriate place in the wiki. In those cases, if you click on "DISCUSSION FORUM" in the navigation bar above, you can see all the threads no matter where they are.

If you have a truly original topic, that's the time to start a new thread. Otherwise, there are lively, fun conversations already happening that we'd love for you to join!

Thanks~

Bravo Morgaine! As someone who has been posting on this forum since the very beginning of September, it has become increasingly difficult to navigate through threads. Each day when I have to come home from work or school, topics that were on page one in the morning are on page 3 or further because MORE duplicate threads are posted. YOU do an awesome job and directing people to the proper threads that ALREADY exist on their topics! Keep up the GREAT WORK!

Is there an option to "sticky" this thread? By that, is there a way to have this thread remain at the top of this board without it having to be bumped to the top? I know I was confused as I was in threads that disappeared and I did not know why. This helps.

As well, I will not jump into a thread that already has 100 plus entries as I will not read all of them. This site is different and can be very hard to navigate or find a thread again. It takes a while to figure out which category to post under. I like that there are sections for specific characters. I also like that these threads will also appear under the general heading of Discussion Board. I have no idea as to what the difference is between Wiki and Discussion board., yes despite my screen name which was chosen by accident out of frustration over finding a unique screen name.

I know the pace has picked up rapidly on this board. Over a week ago, it was a different story. Many want to discuss and may not be used to message boards in general or may be used to other forums.

But, thank you. This is VERY helpful.

We're kind of limited with what we can do on this wiki. Some Fora can combine threads, but this one can't. All we can do is move, delete, or turn a thread into a page. So bumping is the only options to keep this at the top.

I also can't lock threads, so we can't say a thread is done and start a number two, so your best bet is to pick a main thread, go to the end and read the last page or two before you post. I know that isn't ideal, but most people are finding it workable.

We have over 2000 people registered, so we're getting slammed with new threads. We've got 24 pages of them already, so that's why we needed to get control of them. The best conversations were getting buried by multiples that went nowhere.

The difference in a Forum and a wiki is that a wiki is collaborative. In a normal forum, only a moderator would probably create threads. With a wiki, you can open the character pages and add your own comments, pictures, edit text, all kinds of things. That only works if someone is minding the store, though, because people will sabotage sites and replace good information with bad.

Believe me, I wish we didn't have to stay on top of this so much. At some point, everyone will get the hang of the board and it will only take occasional reminders for new people. If y'all can just bear with us, we can make this easier and more enjoyable for everyone.

Ah THANK YOU. I will try to remember to bump this one when I drop by again. This must remain on page 1. I have been on boards where people were upset with "bump" as the post because they felt it had no content. But, I understand. Technically, this is a vast and fascinating board. I learn something new each time. This is a very, very fast moving board. Lots of activity. This is good for the show though and that is what is important.

Yeah, it's really exciting that so many people come to the web site. It's a great sign for the popularity of the show. They've got a hit on their hands.

Bump and I agree this thread needs to stay at the top. In the hour that I took to work on my paper it was almost at the bottom!

Thanks, ladies, I really needed to hear that. This has been hard today and people are accusing me of censorship, which makes me physically ill. I think the forum is runnning better this way - don'y you?

I think it's working much better...since you started working as a moderator I have chatted with a lot of new people...Regarding accusations of censorship I don't even understand how it's applicable since it has nothing to do with content it's just helping people join ongoing conversations
