I'll admit that I can be a little harsh in my critiques on actors...Some people are horrible actors but their stars for example Julia Roberts is a terrible actress but people love her...but then there are actors that bring nothing and I bang my head wondering why I have to watch them ruining perfectly good movies/tv shows (Cameron Diaz). Anyrant in regards to true blood some of these guys are okay and I think they'll improve with time(anna, steven, etc) Lafayette is great he steals every seen he's in. Tara and Sam on the other hand are so wooden I feel embarrassed for them.I don't know if its too much botox or not enough experience with on screen acting but they have two facial expressions. Tara uses the same tone in her voice no matter what shes saying UGHH!! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Well, I haven't seen Episode 3 yet (Wed!) but I will say this, I don't like the changes in the character of Tara SO when she comes onscreen I kind of tune her out. That is awful of me I guess but that's just what I do. And I think as Sam gets more story he will be better :)

"I know everyone has there opinions and mine just happens to be I like the acting. I don't expect academy award jobs but hey speaking of academy awards... I do believe Anna received one at age 11 so I think that says she is fine actress. BUT that is just MY opinion. "
^5 to you, Sookierocks!!!! She did receive an academy award and well deserved at that! This show is NEW. I think in this day and age people EXPECT certain things to be somewhat perfect?! Which it is NOT. This series will soar, I KNOW it will. Example....... I personally thought that when Buffy The Vampire Slayer first started out it was so silly, over time it improved and then recieved so many positive reviews. And to denniskeithlev.......... far from glamed sorry to disappoint you!!!!!!!!!!! I know a GOOD show when I see one, mark my words, this is truly a refreshing new series and will DEFINATELY become a HIT!!!

"I'm fine with it too. But this show makes me appreciate anew the guts it takes for anyone to be in the arts, be it theatre or film or television or music. Everyone is an armchair expert. And some reviews can be so brutal. I remember a few interviews with various actors in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Peter Jackson himself, and all of them commenting on how they were always very cognizant of how attached Tolkien fans were to these characters and how they all hoped they did their characters justice. So I wonder, are those the most challenging/intimidating roles for actors? Characters taken from beloved books? I've seen interviews with actors who say they never read reviews, good or bad, because they don't want to be influenced or become too self-conscious about their own acting. I'm curious what True Blood cast members are reading any of the reviews. "
It's a great point about the actors wanting to honor the books authors writing & the fans that follow them, but this writer has yet to prove themself to be a Tolken in quality or longevity.

Are you for real? Their is almost 200yrs. worth of literature & 100yrs. of celuloide to sift through

Literature and myths, precisely.

If an actor wanted to know how to play a doctor well, they could go spend time in a hospital. Interview REAL doctors. Learn medical terminology.

Playing a vampire... all you have is mythology and other people's interpretations. Ball even said the reason he cast Moyer is because he didn't audition like the other 99% of the actors who were playing cliche vampires... he made it a little different.

And hanging out with a bunch of goth vamp lifestylers isn't any more "real" research, either. Unless you're auditioning for a role as a Fangtasia employee.

I hope you are right about this show being a success. I love the whole idea of it, but mark my words if they do not make some cast changes it will not be the success the producers want it to be & they are the ones that are bankrolling this show. As if you didn't know it this is my first time on any forum expressing my opionions, but I think you will find a lot of people out hterethat agree with me about my initial statements. Thanks for not beating up on me to bad!

I think it will be fine. I just found ANOTHER co-worker who started watching it and loves it. And I SO would not picture her watching it.
As to the acting, I am happy. I am even more happy and liking Sam even more after finally seeing episode 3. Woo woo!

I would like to see anyone here who is critisizing the acting to do better...

I've said before we are all entitled to our opinions, but I also feel that you can't fully understand something until you've actually tried to do it, or do it better.

It's not all about the acting skills anyway, it's about screen presence and sex appeal. Both Stephen and Anna have both, and then some. You don't get cast in a landmark HBO series without it.

I dislike critics. 99% of the time if I like a show or a movie they review it horribly, but if I dislike a show or movie oh its the movie/show of the year. SO I just do not pay attention to critics anymore. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Longevity has nothing to do with it. Or with what I posted. I was simply saying that I imagine it's difficult for all actors to take on characters that have a huge, loyal fan base. For every 3 people who rave about how great a job the actor is doing, another 3 will say the person sucked.

Right now the actors are still finding their characters, as are the creative staff and the writer - like all works, time is needed to produce good work. I do think that the characters need more depth plus the viewers need more back ground story lines - but we are only at the 4th episode. My great hope is that HBO and the viewers will have the patience to allow the series to develop. Like all series, some character have great "right away" appeal and others will grow on the viewers with time. Like the great Buffy the Vampire Slayer - time and character development changed a fine program into a Great Series. If this series is allowed time to develop, both characters and strong story lines, it does have the potential to be a very good series.

At this point, the actors are working with a great deal of stereotype characters - but that is the quality from the writer and director and not only of the actors.

IMO, The Lafeyette character has a natural good screen presence and I think Sookie and Bill will also be stronger as their characters get more depth. Anna Paquin is an excellent actress and given good material she can deliver on her character. One thing that I do think comes into play with the series is that it is so tied to a southern locale.

I had to comment because I love Buffy. Ha Ha Huge fan! Own all seasons on DVD. I was worried that I wouldn't like Trueblood because I would compare it to Buffy. I LOVE Trueblood and I have to say I like Bill more than Angel. Not that they both aren't dark and brooding...yummmmm....I love the whole idea mortal vampire love...any kind of forbidden love I'll tune in to watch!! LOL

This type of acting to which you refer is Method Acting... and there are many actors out there who don't need to do tons of research, or spending time in actual situations to nail a role... There is Meisner/Stanislavski acting which draws totally from within the person's realm of truths to react truthfully within an imaginary situation... And Alexander technique which enhances physicality so to free the emotional... So any good actor uses whatever works.

Like you say, hanging out with Goths won't cut it!!!

Moyer also played a vampire in the UK series "Ultraviolet" -- so already had his take on playing one of the undead!!! didnt even need vampire flippers, either, as he put it "I've already got these large canines!"
