Tara - book vs show
Sep 8 2008, 10:16 PM EDT
I think the show's version of Tara is totally different than the book. Honestly, she got on my nerves --- too rude and brash. I just couldn't get her acting this way and still having a thing for Jason, it's like the two ideas don't mix seem possible for her character the way it's being played.

I was hesitant about Tara too, she IS totally different! After a while though, I came to like her character. She's one of those people that we all know...she's probably been burned so many times in the past that she puts up the tough-girl/guy front in an effort to protect herself, but deep down she's just a softie. As evident at the end, when both she and Sam are yelling at Sookie and Tara THINKS "don't you look at me like that when I'm just trying to protect you". Her attitude may need a serious adjustment, but you can tell she's a loyal friend.

I didnt and still dont like this Tara, it doesnt fit for me. Albeit they sort of formed a character from a few others in the book, it doesnt fit and she's WAY to bitchy. It agravates me to watch her "work it", I think a tone down would be order. I like a bristling bitch from time to time, but not every time she opens her mouth. God knows how she has ANY friends let alone Sookie :P2 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

(hey love Tara shes crazy) maybe its just me...but the way the way she is a little rude and loud. It's her attiude a little sterotyping on how African American women act these days? I know i dont act like that and Im that race.

I was worried at first that it was sterotyping, but having watched it I don't think it is. There are a couple of interesting posts over on the I Loved Tara! thread. One of them is basically talking about low-wage workers in general getting really shafted these days and how it spills over sometimes into outbursts. And I do know at least one Caucasian who works those type of jobs, quite a string of them, and though she's not as witty as Tara I can totally see her mouthing off like that and getting fired or quitting on a regular basis.

I must say that overall I really loved the show. Tara I didn't love I think she was too over the top, but not completely lost if she was just toned down a tad she would be perfect

I have seen both Taras now (the original, and the one they replaced her with). Both are annoying, but I think the original actress was probably better.(I accidentally came across a copy of the first episode with the original Tara. Most of it is exactly the same - they just re-shot any scene with Tara in it.) 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

The change in the True Blood Tara as compared to the literary Tara was a bit jarring to me at first, but then I had to laugh because I have a friend named Tara who is EXACTLY like the one being portrayed in the show.

I ran hot and cold with Tara in the books. I thought she was, at times, too whiney, too judgmental and too much, too often the victim. I like the idea of a stronger, more sassy Tara. But it's only the PILOT episode. The actors are still discovering their characters. Go back and watch the pilot episodes of any of your favorite series and pay attention to the performances. I guarantee you, they will have changed. M 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Just a question........I am now reading book #2 in the SVS and (maybe I am blind) but I have yet to read anything about Tara being Sookies best friend, none the less Tara at all!!! When does she show up?? I thought that they were friends from childhood.

In the books, they're not as close. They're friends and they've known each other since childhood. But it's not the sister-like relationship we see in the show. I think Tara shows up in the third book, Club Dead. I'm not positive, though.M 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

I am not a fan of the Tara changes...yes she was a bad friend in the book , but that was important to the story line(human vs supe-friends). Why for cry-eye does every female character have to have the sassy BFF that's attached to their hip(sigh)

I feel they should have left things as they were in the book. As they are now, Tara will be a thorn in Sookie's side throughout the show. I hate to say it but I find her character change annoying, so much so that I find I fast forward her right out whenever I can. Do you find this valuable? |

I didn't think Tara was all that important in the books. She was very much a fair-weather friend and although her judgmental attitude bothered Sookie at times, she never really lost any sleep over it. Tara was a third-string character. I don't think the changes made to her in the show will affect the direction of the plot and necessary themes. Also, some characters needed to be expanded and given larger roles. I think it may be due to the fact that the show isn't told in first-person perspective like the books. We don't have Sookie's inner monologue so Sookie needs more people around her to give voice to her own thoughts. As for the sassy-ness...maybe they'll tone it down as the series progresses, although, I find it quite amusing.M 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

She comes on like some tough chick... yeah she's got broad shoulders, but who's but does she kick? no ones. She acted like she HAD a thing with Jason, but he blew her off. I think that you are correct...It has been awhile since I read the first part of the series, but I seem to remember that Sookie and Tara were friends from childhood, but that they had grown apart the last few years. I also seem to remember Tara did work in retail, but as the owner of her own dress shop, not an employee of either a department store (the store in the show reminded me of a small Wal-mart) or Merlotte's Bar. She wasn't a quiet woman, but she wasn't quite so vocal or angry as the Tara in the show. Still, I find the Tara on the show entertaining. She just wasn't a character you came across on every other page, or even every other chapter.

Tara's character may be brash but I believe that she will develop into someone we all love. Rutina Wesley has talent and I think this role will give her a chance to show it. Hey I am no critic but I have a good feeling about this young actress.
