To Read or Not to Read?
I know Charlaine has many fans but I am a new one. I haven't yet read her books and am debating whether or not to read Dead Until Dark before or after I watch True Blood. I know books tend to be so much more than anything on screen can ever hope to be but I don't want to judge True Blood too harshly. I do plan on reading as many as Charlaine's books as possible, but am not sure when.
But how exciting is this!?!?! An adult vampire TV series! Way cool.

Reasons not to read the books.
Morgaine, you get far more Eric in the books then you do Bill. If they remove Bill from the series I'll most likely loose interest, even though there are several actors that I really enjoy. The HBO soft porn wouldn't be worth putting up with without Bill/Moyer scenes to hold me as a fan to the show.
The only reason I suggest you wouldn't read the books would be if you can't stop yourself from comparing the two. You have to realize that the show is loosely based on the books - the books being detective novels from Sookies point of view. With the limited amount of screen time that Sookie gets they obviously aren't going to pull off the detective storylines of the books.. especially the pace the show is going, it would last forever if they tried + adding in other actors scenes. I wish they started off from Sookies point of view, but they didn't, so it is the way it is.
Personally I enjoy the the books far more then the show. Reading a story yourself allows you to use your imagination & see Charlaines world through your own eyes. With the show you are forced to see the story through the actors portrayal as well as the directors point of view.
The books have something the show will never have. That is details.
Read the books if you wish & enjoy the show for what it is, something slightly different.
