Open Question--Why the Human Fascination with Vampires?
"Great question. I think there are a number of appealing elements: eternal life/damnation, taboos, the id, etc. I have to admit that although I enjoyed some vampire books/films/shows, my tastes (pardon the pun) have been all over the mpa. I always preferred most sci fi to most fantasy (there were notable exceptions). And I thought Frankenstein was a far better book than Dracula. I didn't like the Coppola film at all, but I loved The Hunger; I loved the early Anne Rice novels but didn't care for the later ones, etc. etc. etc. I never really "got" the allure of vampires until three weeks ago. Based on my personal reaction, I have to say that the alienation juxtaposed with the yearning for nourishment/sex/love is enormously compelling, and probably not just to me." When I first became interested in the horror/sci-fi genre it was just because I thought vampires and aliens were cool. I love the themes (better represented in Frankenstein the Dracula) of the struggle of the modern with the traditional especially in regards to the "modern woman"...I think that in horror and sci-fi subjects like science, feminism, sexuality , and religion can be explored and expressed in depth in a way that is more palatable. I can be scared, intrigued, angry, turned on, entertained, and sad all by one story. I find it exciting that Ball is using the vampire lore to express these themes again. BTW I love this thread thanks for starting it.

What's your favorite part of the Wiki?
It's hard to say what my favorite part is. I've spent most of my time in the discussion forum, but I'm awfully fond of
Vampire Mythology http://truebloodwiki.hbo.com/page/Exploring+Vampire+Mythologies
the A-Z section http://truebloodwiki.hbo.com/page/Vampires+A+-+Z
and of course
The most infamous Vampires http://truebloodwiki.hbo.com/page/Most+Infamous+Vampires+of+All+Time
It's getting to be a nice resource for vampire info in general and I enjoy talking about the folklore of the Vampire legends. I'm learning a lot about other series I wasn't familiar with, too.

Buffy
I have to say that I am shocked that you would suggest that Buffy did not "have any lasting effect of vampire mythology, film, art or literature." Are you trying to make people angry? Because it's working. Buffy was, and still is, the best show ever created. Maybe, I am a little obsessed, but I am not alone here. Joss Whedon definitely made his mark as far as vampyre myth goes. How could you not love the love story of Buffy and Angel. I know that Anne Rice explored human emotions attatched to vampires in her books, but it was taken to a different level on Buffy with Angel falling in love with a slayer and getting his soul or essence back. Also, you have to admit that the concept of Vampire Slayer is original and very cool, since she is a girl. Buffy and Sookie are rather similar, if you think about it. True Blood is a different kind of show and I love it. That being said, True Blood is very different and I'm off on a tangent.....Buffy ROCKS!!!!

Confused about biting...?
"This is how I understood it to be, too. Getting bit is okay, nothing happens. When Bill was remembering, whatever her name was said to him if he doesn't drink HER blood, he will die.
But then remember when Sookie was dying and Bill told her to drink his blood and that she will not turn, there must be some sort of reason why she didn't turn into a vampire after drinking his blood. I don't understand this one at all. Was it because it does take a series of drinking the vampire's blood before you yourself become one? Or does the vampire have control over what happens to the person drinking their blood? " Sookie was in danger of dying, yes. If she went to a regular hospital even, she may have still died from multiple injuries. But she was bleeding internally, had broken bones and possibly spine, and had a couple of cuts on her head and such. She wasn't drained of blood to the point of death.
In other mythologies, and possibly this one too, the first infusion of blood heals and beautifies you... so you are "perfect" by the time you actually become a vampire. There's a lot of emphasis on beauty and perfection, since you're stuck with that body forever.

Does Sookie and Bill actually do "it"?- Spoiler Request
"I agree what you say about Bill. He is a vampire and a monster. From scenes coming up, BadBill is coming up and it ain't pretty. And I LOVE it! " The thing is... drinking blood is supposed to be like sex, no... better than sex, for a vampire. This is prevalent in many vampire mythologies, including this one. Some even go as far to say that they don't have sex at all, just swap blood. This mythology, though, says they do both. And that both cause orgasm, for the vampire definitely, and also for the human if it is done in the right context (ie. making love, or under a glamour). So for a vampire to be able to bite during sex would be like him having multiple orgasms... I didn't get that from the slurping and sloshing of THAT bite at all. And he spilled a lot of blood... wasted it, even. Bill told Andy and Bud himself that a vampire wouldn't waste blood.

For Book Readers--Things You Hope Get Left Out (Spoilers!)
Just because Bill hinted at the queen's existence, doesn't mean that the story has to be the same... but anyway, even if the queen sent him to find Sookie, that part is okay with me, it's just how when he admits that, she immediately wants nothing to do with him and is completely betrayed, etc etc etc... I mean, just because he was SUPPOSED to find her, doesn't mean that everything that happened between them was a lie. I understand why she would be hurt in the book, but she won't even speak to him about it, which is really frustrating. And I also wish that Bill's history as a vampire and his connection to Lorena was more explored/explained in the book. I'm glad it's already come up in the series and I like how Bill seems powerless to disobey her (in that scene where he sees his family) because it is sort of laying the groundwork for that... I know that the show would be boring if Sookie and Bill just fall madly in love and live happily ever after, but I just hope it's dealt with in a way that makes more sense to me and adds something to the show.
As for Eric, I do like him, but the whole memory loss thing and then her unwillingness to tell him anything and then he remembers it all... it just takes too freakin long to come out and it starts to drive me crazy.
And as for Bubba... I think that would just be waaaay too much to handle on screen. His character doesn't really do anything to move the books forward... everything he's a part of could easily be dealt with in some other way...

Ask a Witch: Maharet
"Maharet, do shapeshifters really exist?" Well, one "take" on the idea is this whole group of people out there, who believe they are something called Otherkin. Otherkin are people who feel they are dragons, fairies, animals, half-angels, and whatnot that are trapped in "human" bodies.. or, they're descendants of such creatures. ------------------------------------------ From the Wikipedia entry: Otherkin are a subculture of people, primarily Internet-based, who identify in some way as other than human. Otherkin often believe themselves to be mythological or legendary creatures, explaining their beliefs through reincarnation, having a nonhuman soul, ancestry, or symbolic metaphor.
Common creatures otherkin identify as include angels, demons, dragons, elves, extra-terrestrials, fairies, kitsunes, lycanthropes, and vampires, among others. ------------------------------------------ Personally, I thought a lot of these people are just insecure of themselves and are clinging to this "other" persona rather than deal with their own humanity. That, and there are a bazillion role-playing games on the internet, which can feed and fester this alternate persona idea. If you don't like who you are, you can hide behind a Level 407 Blue Nympho Druid Fairy Elf. That being said (and yes I have and do play some of those games, I'm an oldschool MUDder) I can see how this can be an attractive option for a lot of people.
I felt strongly about this until recently. If I believe in some of these creatures (which I do believe in Angels, Fairies, Demons, and spiritual animals, in some fashion).... doesn't that lend half the belief criteria to the Otherkin theory? And also, if I can support a transsexual person in their feelings that they are a woman who was born with a man's body, or vice versa, shouldn't I also lend the same sympathy and respect to someone who feels they are an Angel trapped in a human's body?

Ask a Witch: Morgaine
"Hi Morgaine:
I wonder...Could there really be vampires? I read alot of Sherrilyn Kenyons books as well as others. I would like to hear your thoughts on this. In the series True Blood I find myself being drawn to the charactor of Eric...any thoughts about him. Thanks," I've been enough places and seen enough things to know that there's some truth in most myths. I've never encountered a being that I could confirm had an extended life span and subsisted solely on blood, but I'm convinced it's not outside the realm of possibility. Skin walkers and shapeshifters are real, and a vampire is not so far removed from those that it would take a great leap to believe in them. I do think it would be more likely to find one in the lower Americas than Europe, though. Too many people in Europe for a being like that to function. All kinds of creatures have been seen and reported - ever hear about the nude woman with black wings who was seen flying over a battle field in Vietnam? Beings like that have been reported all over the world. There's definitely more going on in the natural world than anyone wants to believe.
I think Eric is a fascinating character, and not just because Alex is so yummy. There's a rich history for that character that a good writer could spend an entire career exploring. A thousand years is a long, long time. I'm not sure that a human mind, even one altered in some way, could retain its sanity after all that time, but it's an interesting question. Star Trek did a story once about a guy who had been daVinci and Mozart and a whole bunch of famous people over hundreds of years. I'd love to see some exploration of Eric's adventures.

Do YOU have supernatural gifts?
I've worked as a professional psychic most of my adult life. I remembered past lives when I was a baby and still do. I don't consider these things "supernatural" - that's a misnomer. Psychic ability is a normal function of a healthy human brain. People in Western cultures are conditioned to ignore their psychic abilities as children and they fade as they get older. I'm from a psychic family so I was never trained out of it.
Pixie06 - I'm so sorry you haven't been taught about your gifts. There's nothing creepy about them. Everyone has precognitive dreams. Precognition helped us survive as a species. When you accept your gifts as normal, you'll be able to use them to make your life better.
trinitygood - what you are talking about is a form of mind over matter. It's a form of magick that everyone does unless they've been trained not to. It can really mess up your karma if you don't learn not to allow such thoughts to become part of "the law." You might want to check out a book called Positive Magick by Marion Weinstein. Her mythology is lacking, but she'll teach you how to avoid bringing harm to yourself or others. It's very important because all that you do, you do to yourself. What you send out comes back threefold.
