Chapter I: For Reasons Unknown
I stared at my older, grown up nephew. He should now be 22 if I remember correctly. The woman he was with looked a little puzzled. “Robert, you mind introducing me?” The gorgeous woman said. Robert spoke up.
“Bill, this is my wife, Dorothy. Dorothy this is my uncle, Bill. Bill Compton.” Robert said. She looked very polite. She smiled and walked toward me, she hugged me and did the air kiss.
“Good to meet you, I’ve never met any more of Robert’s family. He never mentioned you.” Dorothy looked at Robert and looked back at me. “Now are you related to Robert’s birth mother or father?” Dorothy asked.
“Robert’s mother was my sister.” I told Dorothy. She had this look on her face and then I wondered about Dorothy. When Robert was a teenager he dated a vampire teenaged girl. Was Dorothy herself a vampire? No way. Not only was she too colorful to be a vampire, she was too polite, too cheery, and the most important part…too pregnant. This one was just plain odd.
“Bill, can I talk to you?” Robert said, speaking for the first time in a while. I followed him in an alley smacked between two buildings. “What’re you doing here?” Robert said. I was puzzled. I thought he’d be happy, like he was the first time I reunited with him.
“I came to look for you.” I said. He looked confused and angry. “After 6 years?” “Yes. I’m sorry Robert.” “Why?” “I thought about you every day. I left Lorena in Jacksonville.” “No, I mean why 6 years?” Robert said, which an extremely good question was, I decided I would just tell him the truth.
“Lorena would’ve had us both killed. She kicked me out and freed me.” I said. Robert looked angry again.
“So what? Now that you’ve got no place to go you decide to come mooch off me?” Robert said.
“It’s not like that. I must obey my maker. You dated that Mary-Anne girl! You know how our community works.” Robert had the look of defeat on his face. I put him in his place and I kind of felt bad for it, even though it was 100% needed. Robert fidgeted with his fingers and looked down. He looked back up at me.
“She’s 8 1/2 months pregnant. The babies due soon. If it’s a girl we’re gonna name her Sarah. If it’s a boy…” He stopped. “William.”
Chapter 2: All My Loving
I strode down the road on the carriage. I was back in Bon Temps. I knew exactly where I was going. I wasn’t even gonna think about stopping, just strolling past. I saw the pretty Roxanne Fortenberry, who turned out to have 3 kids in the past 6 years. I strode past the Dearborne house and I saw their house worker, Joanne Thornton taking garbage out at 8 at night…weird. She was always such a nice lady. I tried to not let any of these people see me. I finally got where I got where I want to go. I stopped dead when I saw it. The “For Sale” sign in what used to be my house. I got off and went straight to my old front steps. Lucky enough for me there was a realtor inside, looking like he was just finishing up. And even luckier, he wasn’t from Bon Temps, so he wouldn’t recognize me. And he didn’t look happy to see me. “Got an appointment?”
“No, but why are the owners selling the house?” I asked. “Couldn’t afford it. The woman’s husband was killed in the war.” He said. “How much?” I asked “I think they’re asking about $7,000.” The guy explained. “I’ll pay $9,000. Right now, right here.” The guy was stunned. “Well not right now of course, but I can sign a contract. I’ll need to go to the bank.” I explained.
“Well, umm okay.” The guy was ecstatic and couldn’t believe it. “Just do me one favor. Do not tell the previous owners my real name. It’s a privacy thing, okay?” “Swear my life on it.” The real estate agent said.
I’m sure it went against some sort of rules but I was paying two thousand extra on this house and he would do anything to get this deal. I signed some papers and tomorrow night I would take $9,000 to the real estate office tomorrow. Me and Lorena had made a lot of money from the King and Queen and we both created two separate bank accounts. Thank God!
I needed to prepare to move in and let Robert know where I was staying. Except…Crap! I didn’t know where he was. How was I supposed to get a hold of him? I went straight to Partsish’s to ask. The squeaky voiced girl was working. “Hi again!” She said. “Find Mr. Partsish?”
“Yes, thank you by the way. But do you know his address in Blanchard? Or maybe his dad might or his mom?” The girl looked confused.
“Oh, they both passed within months of each other.” The girl explained. “First his dad died of a heart attack then poor old Mrs. Rosemary Partsish probably just died of a broken heart.” I almost died of a broken heart. Poor Robert. “But I heard Robert has, by far, the nicest house in Blanchard.”
“Thank you, that’s a big help.” I said to the girl and walked out.
Chapter 3: The Way
I decided to just go home, sense it was already 4:30am. I got a driver sense I would need to take cover in the carriage if it was earlier in the night, in order for me not to be recognized. But he was at home, sleeping in Shreveport. I would only use him from when I woke up till about midnight. I dashed into the house, even though the night was still.
I awoke in my coffin to somewhat a lot of noise. The sky was gray and I guess it was about 7:00pm according to my old pocket watch. It was about mid-September so it would be getting darker earlier. I stepped out on the porch. The sun was no longer visible, but it still wasn’t completely dark out yet. The noises were coming from the house across the cemetery, The Stackhouse house.
They moved in a few years before I was turned. A young couple and they had two new kids, I saw. I saw the couple now, they hadn’t changed much, except for their kids. The blond woman strode with her husband back to the porch. His arm was wrapped around her waist. They’re weren’t rich, but they weren’t poor either. They had pleasant crops. I was always fond of Mrs. Stackhouse, she was beautiful. Her blond hair was wrapped up. Her husband was also blond and he had his hair slicked back. All of the sudden I was grabbed and slammed into a tree.
“What are you doing?” I asked whoever grabbed me. I opened my eyes from my flinch and I saw a tall blond vampire. He was probably about 6’2, and I, myself was about 5’11. His blond hair touched his shoulders and he looked like he “died” at about the age of 25, maybe 30. But my vampire instincts told me he was ancient. “Who are you?”
“Shut up!” He said. I found him quite frightening. “Eric Northman. I’m the new sheriff of this area. The King told me to come check you out, said you were fairly new.” I nodded. “They also said you left your maker.”
“I didn’t leave her.” I said, “She kicked me out.” “Oh. Well correct me if I’m wrong, Mr. Compton, but isn’t this where you lived when you were human?” He looked stern and mad. I nodded. “And if you were seen by one of your neighbors? They presume you to be dead. What the hell were you thinking?”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t want to just as much as you wanted me to, but I couldn’t help it. They all just looked so…” I said and Eric turned around, by that time they had already been gone and he shook his head.
“Well, you’re gonna have to move.” Eric said “I can’t. I paid $9,000 on this house! And it’s the only thing I have left of my family.” Except Robert. “And I have a driver for when there’s more people out. So I just hide in the carriage. Please?” I begged. Eric nodded and without saying a word flew away.
Chapter 4: Sometime Around Midnight
As Eric flew away I had just gotten up. I looked back at the Stackhouse’s little house and I went back to mine. The driver had just been getting to my house, knowing full aware of what I was. “Blanchard.” I said as I got in the carriage and we took off. I had a curtain put in the window of my carriage. The seats were decent, colored a dark blue. The curtain covered the open window, but when we left Bon Temps, I opened it up to get some fresh air. I decided to just feed off of an unfortunate wild creature. It turned out to be a deer.
Before I knew it, we were in Blanchard. The girl from Robert’s store was right, his house wasn’t hard to find. They had a long driveway leading to a very large house that made out of a light-colored bright. They had about 8 windows on each level of the front of the house. And from what I could tell about 6 on each level on the side. WOW! They had large double doors that were green. I knocked.
Robert answered. He told me to come in. “I’m back in Bon Temps. I’m living in my old house.” Robert glared at me, confused. I heard Dorothy in the kitchen. She was cleaning. “You know your grandfather owned a house slave?” I asked. Robert once again glared at me.
“We have a house worker.” Robert said. “We pay Rita and her family decently. She’s upstairs cleaning. Back to what you said first, isn’t that dangerous for you to be back in your old house?” Robert asked.
“Well, I suppose. But I have a driver and it will only take me seconds to get to my carriage. And he goes home at about midnight, when everyone’s sleeping.” I explained. “Hey, Dorothy.” I said as she glanced in my direction. She smiled her beautiful smile at me. She continued to clean. I glanced at my stopwatch, it was just 8:00. Dorothy exited the kitchen and came to her husband’s side.
“Hey Bill.” She said. Her arm was wrapped around Robert’s waist. I smiled at the both of them. I couldn’t help but wonder why I was so intrigued by Dorothy. Sure, she was absolutely, breath-takingly gorgeous, but something else. “Hear your back in Bon Temps. You likin’ it?” She asked and glared at me, like she was also intrigued with me. Instead of asking what her deal was around Robert I politely replied, “Definitely, beautiful scenery, great soil for crops, great place to raise a family.” I knew I would never raise a family, and unless I hired a worker, it’d be hard to grow crops in the dark, and in it the scenery wasn’t as good as when it was day.
“So what brings you here so late anyway?” Dorothy asked. She was sure full of questions. Did Robert tell her about me?
“Just wanted to see my nephew’s new home, it’s the only time I could do it.” I was telling the truth. Robert turned Dorothy around and whispered to her, “Can you give us a second?” Dorothy nodded and left the room.
Chapter 5: Show Me What I’m Looking For
“Why are you here?” Robert asked me while he turned back around at me. “Well first of all to let you know where I was living. Second, did you tell Dorothy about me?” I asked, it may have been a bit to straight out and harsh, but it had to be asked. Robert raised his eyebrows at me.
“No. That’s all, Bill, No.” Robert said and chuckled. “Well, umm, is she like…well…” Robert once again glared at me. “What I’m trying to ask is…Is she like you?” I couldn’t be as blunt as my last question.
“She’s human, Bill. What else could she possibly be?” Robert asked. “Is that all?” I nodded. Robert gave a condescending laugh. “Listen, she doesn’t know that you’re a vampire, but she was close to knowing about them.” I gave him a puzzled look.
“When Dorothy was 16 she was walking just a few blocks to pick up something from the market. It had just turned dark and she was attacked by a vampire. She said how she was walking and the last thing she remembered was her waking up in her own pool of blood. She had two separate puncture wounds and to this day, she thinks she was attacked by a bat.” Robert said. “That’s why she might seem a little weird. I noticed it to. She was almost killed. If they would’ve given her their blood, she would’ve been turned, no doubt about it.”
“She’s lucky.” I said. “Yeah.” Robert said. “I need to get back to Bon Temps.” I said and Robert agreed. I felt awful. I hopped back into my carriage and it was 8:30. The deer I had earlier filled me up decently and I probably could last through out the rest of the night but, I was only a little hungry. I sat in my house with candlelight. I though about what Robert had told me and it was horrible, but it just seemed to far stretched. Why did no one help her? Why didn’t they kill her? How did she live?
I decided to go feed off a donor down at the pub where I had gone with Lorena years ago. I wondered how different it was. It was now 10:00pm and my driver agreed to go, but only if we could be back by midnight. I agreed. My driver usually just hung out in my house when he wasn’t driving me, he’d read a book or something. And when I wasn’t sleeping he’d be with his family all day. He’d leave at about 12:00am and get home at about 12:30am. Driving for a vampire sounds pretty easy, except most of them will just kill their driver if they just go the wrong way. I would never.
We were just blocks away and I ordered the driver to stop. A woman caught my eye. She was beautiful and for some reason I wanted to feed off of her. She was just walking home, it looked like. But I couldn’t help myself. I opened my carriage door.
Chapter 6: Bad Things
I opened my carriage door and walked calmly towards this woman. Her hair was covering her ears, and it was left down, but in a gorgeous style, which wasn’t common. A carriage strolled past me. I was feet behind her. I told myself to stop, but I just couldn’t.
She turned around and smiled at me, but when she met my eyes the smile disappeared and fear filled her face. She knew what I was, I could tell. I tried to glamour her, try to tell her to stop, maybe if she wasn’t walking away from me, it wouldn’t be so tempting. The glamour didn’t work! It…didn’t…work. It had the whole glamour thing down just 5 years after I was turned.
She wasn’t vampire. Why didn’t the glamour work? Why did she look so delicious? She turned around again and started walking faster, which made me do the same thing. She knelt down and played with her neck. I grabbed her by the back of her dress and she got up and slapped me. “Die, vampire!” Okay, didn’t hurt…wait. What did she do. It burned. I dug out a piece of silver jewelry that was lodged it my cheek. She was gone.
I looked around an alleyway. Now, not only did I want to eat her, I wanted vengeance. The burn was heeling. I heard a crack.
I ran towards where I thought I had heard the noise. And sure enough she was there, trying to get herself up a wall. I pulled her down.
She fell to the ground and made a painful noise. She looked up at me. What the hell was she? I grabbed her by collar of her dress and pulled her up. “I’m sorry.” I said as I was just about to dig my fangs into her neck. I heard a carriage and didn’t want them to see.
I covered her mouth. I heard the carriage stop and then someone opened and closed the doors. I waited a minute. Two, three, four, five. Nobody. Nobody came strolling along. The night was dead. I looked back at this girl.
If I was gonna feed off of her, I would probably have to kill her, sense glamour didn’t work. But that would be impossible for me to do. It was dark, I knew she hadn’t seen my face well. I grabbed her again. She broke free and ran. She made it to the end of the alley.
She fell over her dress. I calmly started walking after her. The alley was long. She was wearing heels and the street was cobblestone. She couldn’t get away, we both knew it. She tried to get up. She failed.
She then started to pull herself up against a street light. I was getting closer. She then made it across the street. It was so empty. I made it to the end of the alley and she was crying. All of the sudden I heard a roar. Nothing like I’d ever heard before. A female lion knocked me down and growled at me. The woman ran…the lion stayed.
Chapter 7: You Know I’m No Good
I propped myself up. The lion’s face was just inches away from mine. I could tell it was a female sense it had no mane. It roared again and I was somewhat phased. But my fangs popped back out, they had retracted when the lion tackled me. When I did this the lion growled a little. I slapped the lion and pushed it, with my strength it flew a few feet. She got back up and ran straight towards me, again she knocked me down and her jaw was locked on my arm. I bit it and it got up. It went in circles, not taking it’s eyes off of me. It stopped and sat there. It’s wound above her arm was healing quick. I stared at it. I was waiting for it to make a move. I knew I couldn’t win against a lion, I was only 6 in vampire years. I ran. I was fast, faster then the lion, but she was still hot on my tail. I was going pretty fast. Then I fell into water, it was freezing. The lion fell with me. We had been going so fast, we hadn’t noticed the lake. I looked around for the lion. She was gone.
I swam towards the end of the lake and there was an old pier and I propped myself up on it. I scanned the lake. It was dark, but sense I was a vampire, my sight had drastically improved. I scanned the lake and didn’t see the lion. I turned around and heard a woman’s gasp for air. I turned around and saw a blond woman, I couldn’t see her face. It wasn’t the woman I had no self-control over. I bent down a little. The woman was drowning. The gasps for air were getting louder. I heard her yell for help but it was muffled with her chokes on the water.
I snapped out of my dazed and shocked state from the lion and dove into the dark lake. Her gasps and screams were getting quieter, along with her splashes. I bumped into her and she scratched me, I’m sure it was an accident. When she scratched me I flinched and turned around to avoid getting hit again. I turned back and I couldn’t find her. Her screams had completely disappeared. I heard no splashes, and I didn’t see any outlines of any figures in the darkness of the lake.
I went under and it was just to pitch black for me to see anything. I went back up and screamed for her to say something back. I swam around in circles and bumped into something. I felt hair. Her face was flat down in the water. I pulled the woman, who was oddly naked, to the shore. I gave her mouth to mouth and she coughed up the water. She was in a daze as she looked up at me. She coughed up more water and looked back up at me when she finished.
She stared at me for about 10 minutes. Well at least I think she did. I could see her head was facing mine, but her eyes could’ve been closed. “Did you see the lion?” She nodded. “Were you running from her too?” She shook her head, no. She opened her mouth to speak but coughed. She didn’t cough up anymore water, it was just a cough. She sat up.
“I was the lion.” I was confused. “I know what you are. I know what that woman you were chasing was. And you don’t know either, do you?” I shook my head, no. “I’m a shape-shifter.” I cocked my head, letting her know I didn’t know what she meant. “You think there’s only vampires? I can turn into any animal I want, though I mainly turn into a lion. And that woman you were chasing was a fairy. Vampires find fairies delicious, I don’t know why.” I was in a state of shock and disbelief. I wanted to see the woman’s face. I took off my jacket and handed it to her. It had been wet, but so was she.
“Why are you telling me all of this. I just tried killing someone.” I told her. “…Because I know you didn’t mean to. I know you’re good.” “How do you know that?” She got up and headed for the street. I followed. We were getting closer to the lights.
Chapter 8: For You I Will
I saw her back facing me. Her wet blond hair was trailing down my soaked jacket. She turned around and the first thing I noticed was a pregnant belly. I looked up at her face and as I had suspected, it was Dorothy. She stared at me, waiting for my reaction. She pulled my jacket over closer to her neck and I noticed her wound had completely healed. “I can’t swim very well.” Why was she saying this? “Actually I can’t swim.” She chucked. There was silence between the two of us. Dead silence. She was afraid of my reaction. I said the first thing that came to mind.
“You have a baby doctor?” She nodded. “You should get him checked out.” I said. “Does Robert know?” I asked her. Again, silence. “Does he know about you?” “Of course.” I said quickly. “Do you think I should tell him?” I nodded. “He’ll accept you. He might be a little angry for you lying in the first place, but he’ll accept you. And what about your baby? Will it be human?” I asked
“It’s tricky. I’ve miscarried with Robert before. If I were to bite him and turn him, there’s a higher chance of me and him having a baby. But I’d never do that.” I nodded in agreement. I hopped they’d get to have a baby. “Take me home?”
“Okay.” We walked to my carriage. I assumed somebody dropped her off here, or maybe she ran. It was silent for a while, till I decided to break it. “So…fairy?” Dorothy chuckled innocently at my ignorance.
“Bill Compton, how can you be a vampire of six years and not know what she was or what I am?” She was right, why didn’t I know? “Fairies come from another world. They’re not immortal, but they live very, very, very long. Unless they’re killed with…iron, I think it was…Yes, iron. They’re iron is equivalent to your garlic. And they can do some magic. But most of them are down right evil! That lady seemed nice though.”
“So what about you?” I asked. “Well. There’s shifters who can shift into pretty much anything anytime, except most of us have mainly one animal, it makes the process much, much easier. Then there’s weres. There’s werewolves, weretigers, werepanthers. Pretty much anything, you name it. They can only turn into one animal and only at full moon. They usually travel in packs.” Why hadn’t Lorena told me this? Was she just as oblivious as I was? No! She’s been around for hundreds of years. That’s just like her. Dorothy took a deep breath in from exhaustion. I noticed her wrist was still bleeding, even though the wound was much smaller.
“Dorothy? I’m really, really sorry about your wrist. If I would’ve know…” “It’s okay. Really. It’s your instincts. I totally understand.” Dorothy said. Was that really an acceptation of my apology? It sounded a little condescending. I didn’t even mention it. I just took it. The flicker of candlelight lit up the back of my carriage. Dorothy’s blond hair was dark now that it was wet but it was drying. My wet, brown jacket covered her torso, her neck, her arms, and covered up her…feminine areas. She was about 5’3, and I was about 5’10-ish. The carriage came to a screeching halt.
“Walk me in?” Dorothy asked me. I nodded, it was the least I could for me almost drowning her! “Can you do me a huge favor and distract Robert while I go change? I don’t want him to worry.” Dorothy said as she gave me puppy-dog eyes.
“I thought you were just gonna be honest?” I asked. “Bill, I really don’t know, I’ll have to think about it. It’s a lot to handle.” Dorothy explained. I put myself in Robert’s place and she was right. I opened the door and Dorothy flew up the staircase.
“Dorothy?” Robert asked and saw me standing at the front door. “Oh, hey.” Robert said unenthusiastically. I started to think he would never fully forgive me for me leaving him. I guess I didn’t blame him.
“Dorothy getting out of her corsage, she wanted me to tell you. She’ll be right down.” “Where’d you come from? Dorothy had her own carriage.” “Broke down. It’s back here as you can see. But I found her, offered to give her a ride home.” I didn’t feel right lying to my nephew but Dorothy was right in every single department. Robert had been through so much. I don’t know if he could handle it. Dorothy appeared at the top of the steps with a nightgown on. She managed to dry her hair pretty quickly. “Thanks Bill. Robert, I’m tired. I’ll meet you in bed.” Dorothy said she looked at me one last time. “Nice seeing you.” Robert went up the stairs to follow her. He put his arm around her shoulders. Dorothy looked back at me and gave me a small, but genuine smile. I closed their large doors behind me and leapt into my carriage. The drive said he had to go home. I agreed. We drove him home and I drove around for a little bit. I stopped at where I had met the fairy. I walked around for a little bit, while my horse and carriage were both calmly parked at the empty road. I saw a jumble of clothes laying on the ground in a messy pile. I picked it up and smelled it. Sure enough…it was Dorothy’s.
Chapter 9: Sex And Candy
I slept through the night and when I woke up, early again, I went straight to the pub to go feed off of a “donor,” is what we called them. I saw a young, yet gorgeous vampire walk through the door. She looked hundreds, maybe a thousand, years older then I was. She had a large vampire walking behind, that looked just about her age. Every male in the room stopped to watch her make her way across the room. The male donors wanted her to bite them.
I noticed even the lonely king was watching her. His queen had been abducted a few years ago and what was left of her ashes had been found, by a few donors, (intently searching for maybe a cabin) out in the middle of the woods. Before anyone could approach her the King slowly got up which told everyone else not to dare. He walked over to her and she noticed. “Is this your man?” the King asked nodding his head toward her vampire.
“No. My child.” She said. “I’m King of Louisiana, Antwan Ramirez.” “Sophie-Anne Leclerq. How old are you?” “About 800. You?” “About? I’m 1,479 years old. Of last July.” This Sophie-Anne wasn’t one of those vampires who forgot her birthday, oh no. The King looked surprise.
“Have you ever been included into royalty in your, very, very long life?” The King’s voice was seductive when he was finishing his sentence. Sophie-Anne shook her head. “Would you like to?” Sophie-Anne nodded her head. “You’re officially the new queen of Louisiana. You’ll have to come with me to an official summit to name you Queen. And we’ll need to get married.”
Okay, that was that. Afterwards I saw Antwan handing out invitations to something. Then he got to me. “Bill, I would invite you, but it’s just that there’s this regulation. You have to be a certain amount of years to be able to attend a summit.” I knew it was a lie, but I didn’t even really wanna go, so I didn’t really mind.
“Oh, I totally understand. Don’t worry about it.” I said to Antwan and he nodded back at me and made his way back to his new favorite queen. She had probably died when she was like 15 and Antwan probably died when he was about 25-ish. A little disturbing. I got up after spending only 20 minutes at the pub. I never really liked that place.
I got in my carriage and told my driver to head for Blanchard. The ride was a bit more rocky then usual, but I got over it. We strode down their long driveway. I knocked on the door and Rita answered the door. She went to go get Robert. He came back and we talked for a little bit. Then Dorothy came down the stairs.
Chapter 10: 9 Crimes
Dorothy gracefully stepped down the stairs and she pasted a calm look on her face. But my vamp instincts told me she wasn’t. Robert smiled as he watched his wife make her way down the steps. He hugged and kissed her when she got to him. Today her very long blond hair was wrapped up in a tall style and the remaining few inches rested on her back. She was wearing a blue and white dress. The majority of the top was white and by ribs was blue. The large, puffy bottom was mostly white with some blue stripes. She was wearing large white heels too. She smiled at me.
“Dorothy.” Robert said as he gestured for her to take a seat to join us. Dorothy sat down next to Robert on their white sofa. She gave me a greeting smile and also waved. “Did you need something?” Robert glanced in my direction.
“No. I just dropped by to say hi.” “Oh.” Robert said. “Are you sure?” I could tell my nephew was starting to soften back up to me, which made me glad. “Yes.” I simply said, even though I wanted to talk to Dorothy in private. “Dorothy, could you tell Rita to stop at the market later or tomorrow morning and get a few things?” Robert said while walking backwards to bathroom. Dorothy nodded.
“What’s wrong?” I asked her when Robert was gone.
“A few months ago I went to New Orleans with Robert to visit my family. One of my cousins introduced me to a werewolf. She took me to her pack, she knew what I was, I brought Robert along, who didn’t know who they were. When we returned home I got a telegram saying money had went missing from the headquarters of their pack and my family had assured them I didn’t do it. They accused Robert. I got another telegram saying they’re gonna come when I least expect it and kill him. Should I tell him?”
“That’s completely up to you. I guess you could tell him the half-truth.” I explained and she agreed to do that. Robert entered the room.
“Robert, sit down, we have to talk.” Robert did just that with a concerned look on his face. I got up and waved good-bye to both of them after Dorothy gave me a look to let them be alone. I understood. Except I listened in from outside.
“When we went to New Orleans, some money went missing…” Dorothy explained. “They’re blaming you, Robert.”
“Wait, your family’s blaming me?” Robert asked. “No! The people my cousin took us to go meet.” “So…? I don’t have anything to worry about. I didn’t take it, you didn’t take it.” “They don’t see it that way. They think you did it. And they’re dangerous.” “They don’t scare me.” I went for my carriage and prayed for them both.
Chapter 11: Forever
I decided to go to sleep when I got home. When I got home I fed off of a couple deer that were just behind my house. It was gross but it satisfied my hunger for the rest of the night. It was only 7:30 and I decided to just sit at home today and just relax. I rocked in my chair, watched the fire, read the paper, read a book and wrote some letters to a few people I met in Jacksonville. I relaxed on the sofa I had bought. I decided to go into what used to be me and my wife’s bedroom. There was nothing in it but I just walked in and took in the scent.
All of the sudden there was a knock on my door. I went into the hallway and opened the large white door. It was Dorothy, she looked good as usual and she let herself in. She smiled at me and Robert was nowhere to be seen. “I have to go pick Robert up in an hour or so. Stupid work stuff.” Dorothy explained. “You can come if you want.” I nodded. Dorothy was wearing almost the same thing she had on yesterday, except the thin stripes were a red/pink and the top was a majority of white and the sides were the same color as the stripes. Her hair was just as pretty, elegant, and large as it was yesterday.
We talked for about two hours just about stuff, where she came from, where I came from, how old I was, just stuff. Dorothy was born in New Orleans and her dad, also a shape-shifter had died in the Civil War. Her mom was still around. She had two brothers and three sisters. She had several aunts and uncles and even more cousins. Then Dorothy thought we should go pick up Robert, she was right.
We got in the carriage and her driver knew where he was going. The ride was pretty silent, especially compared to our conversation in my house. “We’re almost there.” Dorothy said. A few seconds later she looked scared and worried, but she wasn’t looking at anything, it was like she sensed something. “Stop here.” Dorothy said. We both got out of the carriage and we saw, about 200 yards away, Robert surrounded by a pack of dogs, wolves. I sprung into action, appearing by Robert’s side in about a half a second. But then a man hit me with something…something silver. I was weakened. He then cuffed me with silver handcuffs. The only thing I could do was watch helplessly.
I watched Dorothy start to run. She ripped off the bottom of her dress, which was big and puffy. She threw it on the cobblestone. She then kicked off her heels and ripped the top of her dress, revealing her pregnant belly and a maternity corset. She ripped the laces off in the speed of light. She ripped out her hair and leaped into the air and landed. She had shifted into a lion before she even landed. Robert stared at the lion. He knew now.
The wolves stared attacking the lion. She fought back, killing several werewolves. There was only two left, not including the were that hadn’t shifted. Dorothy put up a fight but managed to kill the other two weres. By now, the other were, in human form, had ran off. Robert continued to stare.
Chapter 12: Run
The weres were turning back to their human form, dead. Robert was even more astonished. Robert snapped out of it and unwrapped the silver chains that I was bounded with. He looked back at Dorothy, who was still in lion form. Dorothy roared and bobbed with her head, indicating me to get Robert out of there while she goes take care of the other were. I agreed it would be the best, sense I was already weakened by the silver.
Robert helped me up. He had a few scratches on him from the weres, but he was in much better shape than I was. We heard Dorothy linger off. Robert sat me in down, my back against a dark, empty building. It was dead silent for about 10 minutes. “What is she?” I looked up and arched my eyebrows to let him know I had no idea what he was talking about. He wised up to my mind games. “What is my wife? I know you know.” How could I not fess up? Should Dorothy just tell him herself? Screw it…
“Dorothy’s a shape-shifter. She can shift into any animal she wants. She mainly shifts into a lion.” I explained, Robert took it all in. “And those things that were after you were werewolves. They can only shift into one animal. They were the people Dorothy was talking about in New Orleans.”
“You knew all of this. She trusted you. I’m her husband. She’s carrying my child.” Robert said. I felt horrible. He was 100% right. How could Dorothy tell me about everything but not even tell her own husband? I mean, of course she would have to explain it to me when she almost kill me. But she trusted me with the whole New Orleans werewolf thing. “I mean. I’m her husband.” Robert said again. He looked at me. “Who are you to her?” he said and walked off.
In the distance I saw Dorothy, as a lion still, leap in front of Robert’s path. They were still for a while. Robert got close and wrapped his arms around the lion. He took in her scent. I wondered if her perfume still lingered when she shifted. There were more growls coming from behind the. Vampire have very good hearing. Dorothy whipped around and indicated for Robert to get on her back. Robert did just that and Dorothy and Robert took off. They past me, and I was a little stronger now. I could fight them. Dorothy and Robert stayed behind me but I commanded them to leave and Robert thanked me. It was weird seeing my nephew, tall, muscular riding on his wife’s back. Well sort of his wife.
Out of the darkness appeared four werewolves. One in particular had a complete silver-gray hair. One had almost like a black hair. One had a light shade of gray, and the other was just plain old grey. They all charged in the direction of Dorothy and Robert, trying to pass me, but I picked one up and whipped it at the other. The one I threw died on impact. The other one got right back and headed in my direction. The other two headed in the direction of Robert and Dorothy.
Chapter 13: Vindicated
The one that was in my direction came charging at me. I grabbed it with lighting speed and whipped it at the ground. It let out a squeal and got up quicker than I could see. That was surprising. There was blood coming from its mouth. More would come.
I kicked it square in the mouth and it let out yet another squeal. I grabbed it by the neck and with one simple twist, I heard a snap. I ran to find Dorothy and Robert. I saw one of the wolves scavenging for their scent. I quietly walked up behind it and I forcefully punched it. I heard the skull crack. I fed off of it and I was feeling even stronger now. I started to smell Dorothy now. I got closer and closer. I turned the corner and saw Robert on Dorothy’s back. Where was this other were?
All of the sudden the were jumped from the shadows and clung onto Robert’s leg. I ran for them and the were turned in my direction. It flung itself at me and I was on the ground, to my amazement. It bit me in the jaw and on my neck and me legs…All of the sudden the wolf let out a squeal and Robert was standing over the were, who was slowly turning back to its human form. Robert had jabbed a metal pole directly through the were’s neck.
I fed off of this one too. Once I was feeling stronger I asked if Robert wanted any of my blood. He declined. Where was Dorothy? We looked all around. Robert had only been off her back for a few seconds. Robert was shouting her name and peering through the shadows to see if he can notice any movement. Nothing. I looked to and he was right. I started to pick up on a scent. “Robert.” Dorothy yelled. I turned and Dorothy was standing under a street light about 50 feet away. She was dressed in her dress, but I could tell it was put on very quickly. I could tell she also wasn’t wearing a corset and her hair was completely down. Robert dashed towards his wife and they kissed.
Robert looked at me and nodded, to indicate they were leaving. I heard their carriage stroll away. I decided to walk home. I thought about stuff on my way back, my old family, Robert, Dorothy, Lorena. I wondered if Lorena would ever come back for me. I wondered if Robert forgave me. I wondered if my old family was all still alright. I wondered what exactly Dorothy thought of me, a father figure, a friend, a lover…No, if she even did think of me like that, I could never do that to Robert.
I walked and thought and walked and though. I finally reached my house. It was late. Everyone was sleeping, all the lights and candles in all the houses were now gone. I went down my driveway and sat on the front step. I wasn’t tired. I looked at my pocket watch and it read 4:30am. I knew the sun would be coming up in an hour or so, so I went inside and got in my casket. I tried my best to fall asleep. In a matter of about 45 minutes, I was fast asleep. |
