Prologue: I had a family. Children, all girls, a beautiful wife and home in Bon Temp, Louisiana. I had been to the war against the Union. I was terrified. And what I was afraid of was nothing compared to what actually happened. I was afraid of dying in the war, on the actual battlefield. I would have preferred to have been shot. Then at least it would have been physically impossible for me to see my family once again. But I'm still alive, well existing at least, and I know I'll never be able to see them again.
Before Tru Blood, before we all came out of the coffin, we had to hide who we were. We had to feed off people, sometimes kill them, or just erase their memories. To this day, I don't think I'll ever get 100% used to the face that I am no longer human. I have and will miss out on so many things.
Chapter 1: Quartering Troops It was a dark and chilly night. I had heard gunshots in the distance I was walking as quiet as possible so the Union troops wouldn't hear me. I had finally gotten far enough. Far enough away from the gunshots. Far away enough from the screams. It was so dark, so cold, so lonely. I walked for what seemed like hours until I saw smoke in the sky. I almost ran before I realized I may have been caught or the smoke could have been a trap. I was close but I then saw a candle-lighten window. I ran towards the small house and knocked. "My name is William Compton, a soldier for the Confederacy. I require food and shelter." I said to the wooden door. The door slowly opened. I went in and a gun barrel hit my cheek. I took in a deep breath and to my surprise I heard a woman speak.
"What do you want?" The woman said. She was very attractive, though she had a gun to my head. She had dark hair, and smaller, but still pretty eyes. She seemed to be lowering the gun. I repeated myself and she put the gun back down and headed over to her kitchen. She grabbed something and went to her fireplace. "Make yourself at home." I did what she said and took a seat in the wooden chair. "You planning on sleeping here?" She asked me.
"Yes." I said sternly. She nodded her head and after a few minutes she laid a plate of meat in front of me with a fork. I started eating and I heard gasp. I turned and felt a sharp pain in my neck when I did this.
"You're bleeding!" she said. And went into a closet to get a cloth. She soaked it outside and came back to set it over the fireplace. She walked over to me. I was prepared for the sting, I experienced much worse pain in the past few months. She placed it on. She then asked me about my home-life.
"I have a wife and two children, Sarah and Anna. I'd give anything to see them again." I said slowly and I then had flashes of them. My daughters playing in the yard, my wife cooking. We talked more about my family. Then the woman pulled my face making me look at hers. She leaned in and I almost kissed her but pulled away. "I have to go. I thank you for your hospitality, it will soon not be forgotten." I turned around and there she was. She had fangs of some kind. She lunged towards me and tackled me onto her bed. I felt an even sharper pain in my neck and I saw out of my peripheral vision blood seeping onto her white pillow.
--Author's Note: Yes I realize the first chapter was short and they WILL get longer, that is if anyone reads and reviews this.
Chapter 2: Becoming . . .
I woke up on her bed. She was standing over me, I was in so much pain. "My name is Lorena," she said "All the stories and legends you've ever heard about vampires aren't just those. They're reality, William. And I've been searching for someone like you for a long time." She said as she cut her own neck and said, "Drink from me, William. If you want to live." I did just that. I was so incredibly weak. I knew almost all my blood had been drained. And I drank and I drank. And I realized she had so many dead soldiers on the upstairs. I just kept drinking. I felt stronger and stronger. The last thing I remember was feeling a change of some sort in my mouth. Almost like a prick hit my tongue. I was dozed off dazed into a state of complete state of fogginess and grogginess. I can't describe it, because at the same time of feeling tired I felt strong. I felt something hit my face over and over, not exactly something hard, but something, not liquid, splashed onto my face, my torso, my legs. I woke up again, I felt myself, almost instantly, climbing out of something. I reached the top. I was underground. Lorena was standing above me. I realized I was different. She spoke, her voice was cold. "You've become vampire, William. All the things you've known are no more." She said. I couldn't even begin to wrap my mind around this. I knew any second I would wake up. I would wake up around my fellow soldiers. This couldn't be real. I closed my eyes as tight as they could go. I opened them. The pitch blackness surrounded us, we weren't to deep in the wood, just outside her backyard. She helped me up and as we were walking back she said, "We have to talk."
She sat me down. I was so hungry. "I need food." I said. She looked puzzled. And then a sign of conclusion came to her face about two seconds later. I laid my head back, again, praying to wake up. "So this is it . . .?" I said. I saw her nod. I felt a tear run down my face. I wiped it and noticed it was blood. "So what do you need to talk about?" I said, humoring her.
"Like I said, you're a vampire, Bill." She said. "William. You call me William." I snapped. She seemed amused "William, you need food." Lorena said and took my hand.
She led me through to her front door. We walked through the woods for about an hour. She carried my compass in her hand. We then heard a snap, someone stepped on a stick. My vision increased. I almost smelled someone different. The figure approached us with his gun. "Identify yourself!" The man yelled with the southern accent. I did what I was told and he came closer. "Is this your woman?" He asked me. I shook my head. "Is she sheltering you?" I answered yes. "What y'all doing out her?" He said. Lorena did all the talking.
"I'm Lorena and I was just sheltering and feeding Mr. Compton here for the night and we heard a scream." She explained. "I didn't here no scream." The soldier said. "Must've been our imagination." She said back and shrugged. "Well, Lorena, you hurry along now and get back to your house. It's almost dawn, so Mr. Compton can come back." He said. Lorena smiled politely and nodded.
The soldier turned around and Lorena attacked him. I fell to the ground so shocked. Was she gonna turn him to? She bit him on the neck and he screamed, absolutely horribly. He gurgled and fell to the ground. I felt obligated to do something, so I grabbed his gun and pointed it at Lorena, ready to shoot. She looked amused. I heard her chuckled a little as she wiped the blood from her chin. Before I could react, she was behind me and grabbed the gun from my hand. "Drink from him." She said sternly. I wouldn't. I couldn't.
"I won't!" I said. "I won't kill another human." I said, refusing to do it.
"You won't kill a human, not another. You're vampire. There's nothing else on this planet that you can stomach, William. There never will be, you have to drink it, or you will die." Lorena had been blunt and I had no choice. I was so hungry and weak. "Before the dawn, William! You don't have to kill him. Just drink from him, I'll erase his mind, and then we'll sleep." This still sounded up-right revolting. I kneed down next to the bleeding soldier who pleaded. The pleas went straight to my conscience. I got closer. My lips were almost touching the wound Lorena had made. I backed away at the very last second. Lorena let out a sigh of disgust as she walked over to him and drank some more. She laid him down and spoke to him. "An animal attacked you, it was bird-like. This is what you will tell people. You forget completely about this incident. You never saw either of us." Lorena said and looked at me.
As we walked back to the house in complete silence, the sky had turned gray. It had to have been at least 5:00 am. Lorena looked uncomfortable. We walked slowly back to the house. Lorena entered and I followed. She led me to the cellar. The windows were boarded up. Lorena opened up the double-door closet, revealing a coffin. "You sleep here for tonight. I'll make you one tomorrow night." She said. Normally I wouldn't make my hosts do such things. But in this case I thought she deserved to go through the manual labor after putting me though this hell. She went up the stairs and I heard the outside door open and I knew she was outside. I was getting tired. I heard Lorena return only moments later.
She returned with a raccoon in her hands. It's neck had been snapped. She tossed it toward me and I caught it. "Don't get used to that!" She said sternly. Lorena blew out the few candles that had been sitting on a few nightstands. I sank my new fangs into the raccoon. I drank and it made me feel so strong. However, I was still tired. I tossed it to the side, knowing I'd get rid of it tomorrow. I layed down in the coffin and was bout to close it before Lorena said. "We have a lot more to talk about tomorrow." Lorena said and shut the lid.
Chapter 3: "Your Family"
I woke up at about 7:00pm and sense it was fall it was pretty dark out already. I heard Lorena's footsteps moving on the wooden floorboards. I hated her. I wanted to go upstairs and tear her throat out. I opened the wooden basement door and saw Lorena at the fireplace, it looked like she was just focusing on the fire. "Are you hungry?" she said slowly and coldly.
I waited for a moment, knowing that another soldier would probably be her main course, but I was rather hungry. I would probably convince Lorena to let me eat another animal or something so I said, "Somewhat." There was a pause and she nodded her head. I remember my family completely oblivious to the fact of my disappearance any I knew any day they'd get a telegram of my being MIA. "I wanna see my family." This made Lorena turn around.
"You can never see them again." Lorena said hastily. I looked at the floor knowing it wasn't true. I knew I would see them again. I wasn't gonna let Lorena push me around.
"I'm gonna see them. Whether you like it or not." I said and Lorena turned to look at me. She was mad. Her eyes looked like she could kill me, which she could. However I was vampire too. I turned to open the door and I heard a woosh. Lorena slammed the door shut. I grabbed Lorena by the collar of her long dress and tossed her aside making her knock over a table. I opened the wooden door and headed into the woods. Lorena tackled me from behind and punched me across my face. She leaned into me, her lips almost brushing against my cheek.
"I don't wanna hurt you, William. But I will. I'm much older then you and much stronger then you. And you haven't had blood in almost 24 hours." I got up with her help. I'd given in. I stood there, defeated by a woman, looking at the ground. "I'll take you to see them, William. You cannot speak to them, and this will be the last time you will ever see them." Lorena said. She took my hand and we headed back into the hood, towards the Compton house, where I no longer lived. We went into the woods. "Run, William. We can be there in 20 minutes." I was puzzled and I showed it on my face. "Vampires can move at incredible speeds. Some of us can even fly." I started to run and she did too, but she was far out of my sight. I was running how I usually did. I started going faster, I'd noticed but not by much. Lorena, for all I know, could've already been at my house. She could've already seen my family, fed on them. I suddenly felt a huge gust of wind at my face and I knocked Lorena over. She grunted and gasped at my sudden appearance. I knew where we were. Just minutes away from my house, and that's at normal walking time, which is what we did.
I saw a light, the porch light in the distance. I saw my wife and my two daughters on the porch. I wanted to run to them. "This is them . . . ?" Lorena said. I nodded. "Are there any more? Sisters, brothers? Nieces? Nephews?" I nodded again.
"1 nephew. My sister died in childbirth with him. I helped raised him for the first several years of his life, then his dad's sister decided to take him in." Lorena was now standing behind me and I kept staring at my family. I wanted to run to them and hug them all. For some reason, I just didn't.
"You can't see them anymore. We have to leave." She said coldly. "I will see them again. I wanna come back every night." I said, refusing to follow her stupid rules. Lorena chuckled. "William you're incredibly naive. Do you wish to see them grow up, weak, and die?" She said. I shook my head and shot her a nasty look before we returned into the forest. I was silent for the rest of the night.
I laid on the bed, which Lorena had just for show, of course. Hours must've passed and I heard the door slam. Lorena left. I went to look out the window and Lorena was gone, must've left to go feed. Hours passed and Lorena came back into the door. Some blood was on her dress. She was holding a freshly dead rabbit. She set it on the counter, waiting for me come get it. I put my head back down. Lorena entered the room.
"Are you gonna eat." She watched as I shook my head. I felt her sit on the foot of the bed. "You're the first person I've ever made. But I've heard stories of it, and some people do act how you're acting, some just get incredibly excited, ready to start their new life." I remained silent. "Tell my about this nephew you mentioned. I've heard plenty about your children and wife. But you mentioned your nephew. What's he like. I've used to have a family of mine. But of course, I had to leave them after I was made. That's actually one of the good reasons I chose someone like you. But let's hear about him." She actually did sound intrigued.
"His name's Robert. He should be about 11 now. My sister Sarah had him and she died in childbirth with him. Then his dad died in an accident." I heard Lorena make a question humming sound. "He was drunk, very drunk. And one night he had some woman with him. Keep in mind this was only months after the accident, so he was probably just out looking for a new wife. And he was down by the beach with her, probably making love. And I guess afterward they decided to go for a swim." Lorena looked up at me. "What about yours?"
Lorena looked gleefully happy. She spoke. "Well back in England, I had four children, three boys and a girl. There was Arthur, Eugene, and Cyrus. Then my little girl was Beatrice. The oldest, Cyrus, was about 13 when I was made. I guess my husband got re-married almost right away." Lorena said. She looked up at me and a bloody tear was rolling down her face. I shared her pain. But I grabbed a handkerchief that sat a few feet anyway. I gave it to her, instead of wiping it off for her. I still hated her, but not as much. She gently padded her face. And they were gone. "Go eat." She said and I did. I grabbed the raccoon and sank my teeth in. I disposed of the carcass in the back woods. When I came back Lorena was sitting on the couch. I sat next to her. She looked at me. She grabbed the back of my neck. I started hating her even more less. She leaned me in closer to her and I closed my eyes. At the very last second I pulled away.
"I'm sorry, Lorena, we should go to bed. Dawn's approaching." I said. She looked through the window and nodded her head. We both followed downstairs and there sat two coffins directly next to each other. Lorena had put thick, thick curtains up, so the basement was even more light-tight then it already been. Plus that, we went into our coffins. As I closed my lid, I watch Lorena slowly close her's. She smiled at me, and quickly, I was far into sleep.
Chapter 4: The Pub
It had been days after I went to visit my family. I had still not fed off of a human. I could tell Lorena was growing weary of my habit. I was in the kitchen and Lorena had gone to feed. She returned, without holding a dead animal. "You're feeding the way real vampires, tonight!" Lorena said. I shook my head.
"I'll just find my own food." I walked towards the door and Lorena shoved her hand into my chest and made me fall straight on my back. She stared me directly in the eye, like she just wanted to strangle me. She had become so tired of my way, my (not so) violent ways, I guess.
"We're going to a pub, miles away from here. It's where vampires like us go, and humans too. These very few humans know of our existence. And they let us feed. Does that sound good?" I looked up at her and nodded. I was so hungry and beginning to get weak. She helped me up and said, "We're taking a carriage there." Lorena had kept a few horses far back in her barn away from the house. I had seen a wooden carriage. "The driver will be here shortly." She said as she went downstairs, to do something that I didn't really care about. I still held a hatred for Lorena, but not as strongly as about a week ago.
Before I knew it, we were in the carriage and on our way to this bar, that I had no idea how long it would take. I was beginning to grow extremely hungry. "Is he a vampire too?" I asked Lorena and she shook her head and smiled at me. The driver had gray hair and had to have been in his late 50's. He was wearing a dark blue suit and a cliched top hat. He had black gloves on and was just casually working the horses.
"We still haven't talked about a lot of the rules about the vampire world. We'll talk about it all night tonight. We'll start at the fact that you will quickly be able to tell that a vampire is in fact a vampire, or any other supernatural creature for that matter." Lorena explained and I looked at her funny. "There's werewolves, shape-shifters, fairies, and even witches. Werewolves turn into a wolf at a full moon, shape-shifters can turn into any animal at any time, and the other two you can figure out on your own, right?" Lorena said. I nodded. Before I knew it the carriage came to a halt and the driver helped Lorena out, I got out on my own of course.
Lorena had dressed me in a black suit and a tie. She made me put my hair back and wear black dress shoes. I had never really dressed like this. All the vampires were also dressed exquisitely. Lorena was right already, I had been able to point out at least 3 vampires. One of which was blond and hair long hair, he was dressed in a suit as well, except his was white. The female had black hair in a bun and was wearing a baby blue dress, she was gorgeous. Then I saw a male that was with the woman. He had also had long hair, but it was brown, and like me he was dressed in a black suit. Everyone seemed to be looking at the couple, some fearful, others lustful, and some envious.
Lorena and I sat down and she waved over, what I thought to be, a human lady. She had red hair and had a gray dress on that had a, abnormally, large bottom to it. She sat down and looked like she wanted to jump my bones. She was holding a beer, so then I knew she was a human. "Hi, I'm Isabella. What's your name?" She said to me. I told her, except I used William, which I had never really used sense I became a vampire. When I was a human people usually just called me Bill, or Compton.
"Isabella, William here, as you know it already, is a vampire. A fresh vampire. I want you to be his first feeding." Isabella looked so excited. Lorena was so casual about it. How could these people know about vampires and not tell anyone. Isabella continued to look excited until a puzzled look came over her face. She looked at Lorena.
"Are you trying to trick me?" Isabella said. "Get me to go outside with him, just so the two of you can drain me?" Lorena looked heated. She put her fangs out. "If you want me to drain you, little girl, I'd be happy to." Lorena said.
Isabella had to have been at least 20, 25 maximum. Isabella looked down and then back at me. Lorena used her head to gesture to Isabella to go outside with me. Isabella stood up and walked towards the door, I remained seated. Lorena had her fangs out and gave me a look. I stood up and walked after Isabella. She had been leaned against the wall of the pub. She grabbed the back of my neck and quickly forced my head to hers and she kissed me.
For some reason I kissed back, I felt her pulling her knickers down. "Do you want to?" She said and I shook my head. She let out a sound of disgust and just leaned her neck for me to bite. My fangs had pricked my tongue again. I got closer to her neck and my fangs were brushing against her skin. They slowly sank and she grunted, as if it felt good to her. I felt the blood in my mouth. It tasted so good. I felt myself getting stronger. I kept sucking and the moans of her pleasure changed. I didn't seem to care, though I would've 30 seconds ago. Her blood was so addicting.
She began to moan in pain. I wanted to stop, but I just couldn't. I could feel her getting weaker, and she let out a little shriek. "STOP!" Lorena said. She pulled me off of the girl before it was to late. She leaned down at the girl. "You were attacked by another vampire. One you couldn't identify. Not this man." Lorena had pointed her finger at me. She nodded. Lorena looked at me and somehow looked angry and pleased with me at the same time.
Lorena and I had sat back down. And I felt amazing. All five of my sense felt stronger. My wrist was resting on the table and the wood felt so amazing rubbing against it. The couple that looked stronger than most, looked in my direction. Well the woman did anyway. She tugged on her man's collar, and he also looked in my direction. They headed over to our table and sat down.
Chapter 5: King and Queen of Louisiana
"I'm Antwan." The man said. "And this is Catherine." The man had a thick Russian accent. "Lorena, do you mind introducing us to your 'child'?" Antwan said. Lorena looked a little nervous, but tried her best not to.
"Not at all. This is William, William Compton. I turned him almost a week ago." Lorena said. The couple looked intrigued.
"And you've fed already?" Catherine said. I nodded. "Good for you. Some take months before they can finally feed of a human. But then again most are only days before they can. Hell! Some just wanna feed right away. But good for you." Catherine spoke fancy, and had a English accent.
"Do you mind me asking, but you two are stared at a lot. And in my mind you seem stronger, I can feel it." I said and Antwan interrupted me.
"Me and Catherine are the King and Queen of Louisiana." He said and made 'King and Queen' so full of his accent. I looked puzzled. "Every region has its own ruler. In Louisiana's case, rulers." I nodded.
"So, do you mind explaining to me what you get to do. What power do you hold?" I asked and they didn't seem angry but they did look at Lorena stupidly.
"Lorena you haven't talked to your child about this?" Antwan said. She shook her head and Catherine chuckled. "William. We can make any vampire do what we please. Project, side jobs etc. We hold and decide the punishments of vampires or humans for that matter that decide to betray us." This was my answer for why people didn't tell anyone that vampires existed.
Me, Lorena, Antwan, and Catherine talked for about 30 more minutes and they headed off. Lorena took my hand and we got back into the carriage. I wondered if the driver knew we were vampires, so I asked Lorena. "He's known I'm a vampire anyway." Lorena said.
"We need to talk more about rules about our world." I nodded. "First, don't you ever embarrass me in front of those people again!" Lorena said and I kind of felt a little bad. I didn't mean to, but that was obviously extremely important for her. "And another thing. I'm your maker, so until the day I die, which might not even ever happen, I have a hold over you. If you're across the country and I need you someday, you must come. Same goes for Antwan and Catherine. If they need you, no questions asked, you go to them. You also need to learn how to glamour. It could take years to master, but you'll be able to do it someday. Once you learn to glamour people, you'll be able to erase their minds. You just tell them what you want to have happened, instead of what really did. Like I did with Isabella." There was a pause. "Speaking of which! You never, ever, ever drain a human! Because once you do, there's a missing person's case and then there's a chance that our world could be known to the human world!" I nodded.
There rest of the trip was silent. The carriage stopped at the house. We got out and the driver went on his way. I never really even heard his voice. He was kind of creepy now that I really thought of it. The sky was beginning to get gray and me and Lorena were tired. I layed in my coffin and Lorena watched me close my lid. She got in hers and closed hers as well. I didn't fall asleep right away. I heard some weeps from Lorena's coffin. I got out and opened hers.
"Go away, William." She said and tried to close it. I held it open. "I'm sorry I embarrassed you." I said. "That's not it. You were supposed to be my companion. And you hate me." She said, the bloody tears rolled down her face. I felt horrible. "I was so lonely, William, I'm sorry I took you from your family. To this day I miss mine, and I was just selfish. I should've just made someone without a family. But I didn't. I wanted to relate to someone. I really did, and it was way more then I expected." Now I felt really horrible.
"I don't hate you Lorena." And I guess it was at least half-true. I more resented her now, but I did hate her my first day as a vampire. "It's just gonna take some time for me getting used to. And we do relate to each other. We have a lot in common. And I know we're gonna be really good friends some day." She smiled and stroked the bloody tears off of her cheek. Her hand touched the top of mine. I smiled and said, "Goodnight, Lorena." I closed her lid for her and hopped into mine. All of what I said had been true. I closed my eyes and in seconds I was sleeping.
Chapter 6: Glamour
"Wake up!" Lorena yelled and ripped the lid to my coffin right open. I moaned in weakness. "You messed up real bad, William." She said. I kind of got nervous, I didn't show it though. Instead I just gave her a puzzled look. "Two days ago?! At the pub. Isabella?" I nodded. "You almost drained her and now for some reason Antwan and Catherine want to speak with you." She stopped yelling, thank the good lord, but I was nervous. Will I be punished? How did they find out? "Don't even bother asking how they found. I have no idea. But I knew I should have never trusted you with that girl." She said and went straight up the stairs without saying a word. I don't know what was with this woman. Sometimes she was real gentle and sweet, like the night after the bar. Now she's just mean and grumpy.
I went up the stairs and went for a walk in the woods. I had been thinking about my past life, of course. My family. Then I heard a voice, "Compton?" the man said, who was familiar. He came into my sight, I thought vampires were supposed to have enhanced sense. Maybe I just wasn't that experienced quite yet? It was someone who I was stationed with. Someone whom I didn't get quite along with. I was hungry. I was just about to pounce before he said, "Compton! Where have you been? Everyone's been looking for you. Your family was just notified of your disappearance last night. I guess they'll be happy." He gave a forced smiled and he examined me from head to toe and said, "You look alright, right?" I didn't say anything. "You deaf, boy?!" He said and got closer. I was in shock of the news about my family. I was just starting to do okay and I was back where I started.
The soldier shoved my shoulder to, what he thought would, snap me out of it. I grabbed his arm and swung his torso against a tree, still having a good grip on him I pinned him against a tree. I had a mix of emotions. I was heart-broken for my family. I was enraged with the soldier for, in my position was, kicking me while I was down. Without even hesitating I sank my fangs into his neck and sucked. I made sure not to drain him. I dropped his half-conscious body on the cold hard leave-covered ground. I leaned in and made him look directly in my eyes. I thought I'd give this "glamouring" and "mind-erasing" a shot. "I was never here. You never seen me. You were attacked by a bat. A large and hairy bat." Boy was I bad at lying.
"What are you, Compton?" he said as I turned my back to run away. My plan had failed. I waited for Lorena to emerge from the shadows. The soldier started yelling. He went for his rifle and I snatched it out of his hand before he could blink. He kept yelling. I was just waiting for Lorena to come get me out of this jam. Before I knew it Lorena had her hand over the soldier's mouth.
"Congratulations, William. You fed without me, you're really starting to become a real vampire." She said casually. I a yelp of the word "vampire" within Lorena's palm. She looked up at me and said, "What are we gonna do about this?" I was puzzled.
"Erase his mind." I said. "You haven't tried?" She replied. "Of course I have. It didn't work." Lorena walked towards me and put both her hands each of my cheeks. She looked at me lustfully.
"William, most vampires will take months, years, to learn how to glamour and erase a human mind. But I know you, William. You can excel, I can feel it. I won't do it. You will. Go over there and do it. I know you can." There was a long pause. Nice Lorena was back. I did as I was told and walked over to the soldier was trying to crawl away on his stomach. I flipped him over and made him look directly into my eyes again. He was yelling. Every single one of my emotions were racing.
"Stop yelling." I said and the soldier had a deep look of fear in his eyes as he stopped yelling. I had no idea if my abilities had worked or if he was just afraid of me. "You listen, now. Me and this lady were never here. We were never in these woods. You never saw us. And you were attacked by an animal. A bat. You understand?" I said, and still with that dazed and afraid look in his eye, he nodded his head.
"Yes sir." he said. Lorena and I dashed off. We were back in the house. To my surprise the sky was turning gray. I must've been in those woods all night. Lorena smiled at me as went went downstairs.
"Tomorrow, we go to meet with the King and Queen." Lorena said, sitting in her coffin. I always wanted to burst out laughing at the face that there were actually a vampire Queen and King. It just sounded, well, ridiculous. Instead, I kept a steady face and nodded. I gave Lorena a smile and she returned one. "I'm proud of you Bill. I knew you could do it. You're a week-and-a-half-old vampire that can already glamour people." She said and smiled once more. Her hair was down, which I didn't really get to see often. She laid in her coffin and I laid in mine. I quickly dozed off ready to face, "The King and Queen" tomorrow. I chuckled at the thought right before falling fast asleep.
Chapter 7: A Favor
Me and Lorena woke up and got right into the carriage. Chance are, we'd probably feed off of one of the humans at the bar. I wanted to smack myself thinking so awful, so casually. We entered the bar and there was Antwan and Catherine sitting at a table. There were four humans sitting in a corner, chatting among themselves. Antwan, barley even looking up, waved us over. We did as "the oh so powerful king" told us.
We took our seats and I noticed each of the humans were eying down each one of us. A blond-haired woman with a very noticeably large bosom was staring at me. A long black haired man with a pony-tail was looking at Lorena. A short red haired man with shoulder-length hair was looking at Catherine. And a very attractive brown haired, which was almost to long, had already come over to hit on Antwan. I assumed each of these human would let us feed off of them.
"Isabella." Catherine said, which snapped my attention from the humans directly towards Catherine. I raised my eyebrows. "We heard you almost drained her and you were just over a week old. Wow." She said. I couldn't tell if she was impressed or angered. Her voice was so neutral, but then she explained herself. "The first time I drained a human was when I was almost 5 years old." I wanted to laugh at her for calling me a week old and herself 5.
"We don't condone the draining of humans, William. I have found myself responsible for the draining of a few humans, but that's only when it was a necessity and that word never leaves your head. Speaking of which, nothing leaves this building." I nodded. "It can expose our world to the humans. Speaking of which, we brought you here for that exact reason. I wouldn't have imagined draining a human after only being a vampire for a week." He said. "You're tough."
"He can glamour already." Lorena said, both looked extremely impressed.
"Is that so?" Catherine said. By now the woman that had been staring at Antwan was rubbing on his lab. "You're food, Mary!" Catherine said with her voice full of jealously. Mary then held her neck close to Antwan's mouth. He denied it.
"A human that used to be a member of this bar once dated a vampire from here. After she left him, he started speaking to the other humans here about spreading the word about our world. What I want you to do is find this human and bring him here." Antwan said. I was confused at the fact that a woman left a man, because it wasn't common whatsoever. Then I realized the woman was a vampire, and in the vampire world, the human probably never left the vampire.
"What are you gonna do to him?" I asked my voice with worry. Antwan looked at Catherine. He chuckled. "Don't worry about it, William. Just worry about getting him here before he starts talking. If you refuse to bring him here you'll face punishment for attempting to drain a human." He said sternly.
I wanted to ask why they actually could drain a human but I couldn't even attempt. I didn't even think twice about avoiding that. I just nodded. "I'll do it. What's his name?" I asked.
"Richard Pickford. He lives in a town called Shreveport. I have no idea where exactly he lives, that's for you to find out. Ask around the town." Catherine said and I noticed Antwan was nodding. He waved back the human to feed and waved the other two humans in our direction. I fed off a willing human, for the second time. We got back into the carriage and Lorena and I spent the night just talking about stupid stuff. About how stupid Antwan's girl's hair had been, you know just useless stuff. We got into our coffins a little earlier then usual and fell asleep.
Chapter 8: Reunion
We rode the carriage to Shreveport and I told the driver to stop at a locksmith shop. We entered and the bell rang the door. The locksmith had a barrel-like figure and had a gray hair and a thick gray mustache. "Good evening, sir. I'm looking for man by the name of Richard Pickford. You heard of him?"
"Who wants to know?" He said not exactly in a rude tone. "My name is Jack Trevers." I said, pulling a name out of the sky. "He owes me some tobacco." I said, pulling another random lie of of the air. The locksmith nodded.
"I heard of him, he's come in here from time to time. I have no idea where he actually lives though. Try the market, the owner and his son know everything and everyone in this town." The locksmith had been pretty helpful.
The market was just walking distance away. We crossed to cobble-stone road where few carriages had crossed. The windows had been lit up with candle-light. The name on the front window looked oddly familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on it. We entered the clear glass door and the bell rang. There were about 6 aisles in the whole shop and I saw the middle-aged man poke his heard around a shelf. He was standing on a ladder. He had brown hair and I could tell he had just recently shaved. He looked even more familiar and it looked like he'd recognize me too.
"Not locals right?" He asked. We both shook our heads and Lorena smiled. I started to feel uncomfortable. Lorena could tell. The man held his hand out for a greeting. "I'm Kevin Partsish. How can I help you?" I knew his last name was Partsish from the front window. I was getting closer to realizing who he was. Lorena looked at me to answer. This was my job, she had just come to keep an eye on me.
"Yes, sir. We were told to come here for help on locating a citizen of your town. He owes some tobacco. His name's Richard Pickford." Kevin looked stumped.
"I know the name and I know the face, can't tell you where he lives. Tell me something..." Kevin paused. I searched for the name I'd given the locksmith and in about five seconds I retrieved it, "Trevers, Jack Trevers." Kevin looked puzzled.
"Mr. Trevers, you look familiar. Where you from?" He asked. "Mississippi, Jackson." I lied, Kevin nodded. I was getting so close to figuring out who this man was. "One second, my son might be able to help you."
Kevin turned to the back door leading to a flight of stairs and yelled, "Robert! Come down here for a second, someone needs your help." My heart sank and I turned around trying to act as casual as possible. I turned to Lorena for a pleading look. I heard footsteps coming down the stairs. I didn't know what to do.
Me and my sister's husband (Robert's dad) never really got along. I only met his side of the family once or twice. When he died I went to his funeral, I didn't talk much though. That's when Robert came home with us. We raised him for the first 6 or 7 years of his life.
The footsteps were getting closer. Maybe it wasn't him, right? It could just be a huge coincidence. I felt his presence in the room. I had been leaning against a shelf so he couldn't see me. Could he? Could he see me? If he saw me, he could contact my family, and tell them, they'd think I willingly left them. What would I do? Lorena was staring at me, she gestured with her head to go talk to him. I shook my head slowly. I heard Kevin talk. "He's over there." I heard my nephews footsteps getting closer. I saw out of my peripheral vision he was staring at me. I turned slowly at him, it was him. It was about 15 or 16 now. He smiled. "Uncle Bill." he said.
Chapter 9: Robert
I managed to grab Robert without his guardian, Kevin, noticing. He looked stunned as I softly pinned him against on a shelf, without Kevin noticing. I looked into his eyes. I planned on glamouring him, making him forget I was ever hear. I looked deep into his eyes and I stopped. I couldn't do it. He loosened my grip I had on his arm by shaking his shoulder once. "What the hell is wrong with you?" He said quietly. He walked down the other aisle, still out of sight of Kevin. I walked after him and I grabbed his arm and walked with him out of the side door. The bell rang I knew Kevin would be out in seconds to check on his "son".
"Robert, you cannot tell Kevin I was here." I said sternly. "And neither Rosemary." Rosemary was Robert's dad's sister, otherwise, Robert's aunt. He looked down and was puzzled. I knew I had to tell him, I didn't have the emotional strength to glamour him. "I was turned vampire almost two weeks ago." I spat out. He chuckled, shook his head and was about to go back inside before I grabbed him. I was surprised Kevin hadn't been out yet. Lorena must've been stalling him. I showed Robert my fangs and got inches away from his face. He was a tall kid, almost taller then me. He had broad shoulders now and short brown hair. Robert was shocked, not even scared. "Come with me and we can talk." In seconds Robert nodded.
Lorena, Robert and I rode in the carriage, I had already introduced Lorena to Robert, but not with telling her that he was my nephew. Robert had been giving us instructions to Richard Pickford's house. It wasn't far away at all. We stopped and I looked at Lorena and said, "I'll get Richard and glamour this kid and we'll go back to the pub tonight." Lorena nodded. Robert looked scared.I helped, almost shoved, Robert out of the carriage.
"What are you gonna do to me?" He said. I looked in both directions to make sure the coast was clear. I helped him in an empty carriage, which must've been Robert's.
"Robert, you have no idea how good it is to see you. I can never see my wife of children again." I said. "And me either?" He asked. I didn't say or do anything. "And Lorena can never find out your my nephew." I said. A look of comfort came over his face. "So I can see you again?" He said, I paused for a good 15 seconds and nodded. He smiled. "Can I come live with you?" He asked. That was where it would be far from possible. I shook my head."Why not?" He said loudly.
"Lorena would never allow it." I explained. I thought Robert had grown, I guess it was only physical. He shook his head.
"I'll walk back to the store. Tell Lorena I said bye." He said sarcastically. He hopped out of carriage and slammed the door.
Chapter 10: Pickford
I got out of Richard's carriage where Robert and I had talked about him not being able to live with us. I did however desire the fact. I almost raised Robert from he was just months old to almost age 8. My wife and I had taught him to talk, walk, and use the outhouse. He was like our first child as a very young couple.
I snapped myself back into business and didn't know exactly how I was going to start about kidnapping a person. Should I knock and pose as some person whose carriage had a loose wheel? Or should I just knock and if he answers just tackle him. Or should I simply not knock and let myself in. I thought that'd be best. I held my knee up and stopped. I wanted to do it, it'd be best and safest, I could see his head resting on the sofa. I tried again. My foot got centimeters away from the door and it suddenly stopped. I just couldn't do it. Physically my foot could not move closer, only farther away.
I knocked and saw him stir through the door window. I knocked again and he got up. He answered it. "My name's Andrew. Me and my wife's carriage broke down and I was just wondering if you got some tools so that I could just fix the wheel." I said slowly. He looked almost angered. He turned his back.
"I'm pretty good at this type of thing, and no offence, buddy, but you don't look exactly like the fixing type. You and your wife can just wait in your carriage and it should just be minutes." Richard said.
"Andrew Harris." I said, making up another name so the 'Jack Trevers' wouldn't match with this one and could somehow be connected back to the vampire world. Richard confirmed that it was him by saying his name in a greeting form. I turned my back and waited in the carriage.
"Well...?!" Lorena said. "Wait." I told her and Lorena saw Richard walking towards the carriage with some tools. He bent down only to notice that the wheel was fine.
"Harris!" He yelled. "Which wheel if broke. I don't see no problem." He said. He looked in the carriage's window at both of us and was startled. Lorena knew that Richard could recognize us as vampire. He started to hustle. I knew if Lorena succeeded in going after him, worse failing, I'd never hear the end of it. I bolted out of the carriage and before Richard could even get to his front steps I was standing in front of the door.
I tackled Richard and bit him in the neck. I only drained a little bit of him, just so he would be weak and make me stronger. The driver knew this was vampire business, so he tried his best not to even glance in our direction. I tossed Richard's half-conscious body. Lorena didn't look satisfied, she didn't look dis-pleased either. I hated this about Lorena the most. Her face was always so neutral, unless she felt a really strong emotion.
We parked in front of the pub. Richard was still incredibly weak. I strapped Richard around my shoulder and we headed into the bar. It was now completely empty besides Antwan and Catherine. Antwan was different from Lorena, he looked incredibly pleased. "Just throw him on the floor." Antwan said.
"What're you gonna do to him?" I asked, my voice trying to be emotion-less. "The punishment is for us to decide." Antwan said. I tried not to fear remorse for Richard. It was hard but not especially hard sense through-out my entire human life, the one thing I despised with every inch of my body had been back-stabbers.
"You're really becoming a vampire." Catherine said after Lorena explained the story to her.
Chapter 11: Partsish's Market
It had been two weeks sense my encounter with my nephew. Not a day went passed that I didn't think of that day. I felt guilt that I turned him away. Lorena had been out feeding. She only left about 10 minutes ago and I decided to go see Robert. I knew if I got caught, both of us could be killed. I left Lorena a note that read, "Lorena, went to go feed. William." I slapped it on the basement door and ran to Shreveport.
I remembered exactly where Robert's house/market had been. I looked in the window. I knew if Kevin saw me, he'd ask about the disappearance of Richard Pickford. There was no sight of Robert. I saw a lit widow upstairs. I climbed the tree in seconds and I looked through. I saw Robert reading. He had his robe still on.
He slid it off, his shift must've just gotten done. I had arrived on perfect timing. I knocked on the window. He jumped and gasped at my sight. He couldn't help but grin a little. I guess he wasn't to mad about my decline about him living with me and Lorena. He opened the window. I was about to crawl in when I stopped. There was that feeling again. I physically couldn't move towards the open window. "You gonna come in or what?" He said. I still couldn't. "Don't just stand there, get in here." My body let loose and the weight that had been holding me down had been released and I slid through the open window.
"Robert, we have to talk." I said. "Don't bother. It was stupid for me to ask. I mean you're a 'vampire.'" He said and did the air quotes. "Yes. I know it's hard to believe." I said. "It is, but I do believe it. And it really is okay that I can't live with you. I was just hoping it'd be like old times." Robert looked at the floor and looked back up. "The war isn't over yet. I mean I hear whispers of Lee surrendering to Grant. I really hope not, but weren't you fighting?" Robert asked.
I nodded. "Yes, I was, then Lorena, my make made me into one just weeks ago." Robert was puzzled.
"You're a vampire. You're strong, you could dominate the battlefield." Robert said. I hadn't realized that if I were go back to the war, I could possibly help the Confederacy win. Then I realized a lot of the battles start during the day and both sides retreat later at night, so most of it would be pointless. I explained this to Robert and he agreed. "Another thing I have to ask you, Uncle Bill. Why me? Why'd you decide to come to me? Why not your wife and your children?" I then had flashes of them, which I hadn't been for a while now.
"Lorena has no idea your my family. She knows what my wife and kids look like." I said. He asked a few more questions which I was able to answer about the vampire world. "You have to promise me that you will never tell anyone of vampires' existence. It could be the end for both of us." Robert agreed instantly.
"Uncle Bill, lemme get changed and let's go out for a little while. We'll use Kevin's carriage." I stepped out into the hallway for about 10 minutes, hoping Kevin wouldn't walk up the stairs. He sounded busy downstairs with a grouchy customer. Robert emerged from his bedroom. "You take the tree. I can take the stairs." I nodded.
Kevin got into the carriage after me. He had been wearing a suit with his hair pulled back. It was cut short and he had a shade of chestnut brown hair. For some reason he had been wearing fake glasses. He was a very good looking young man for his age. He was built well and I wondered how a young man with his stature managed to dodge the war. "Where we going?" I asked.
"You're going to take me to meet a real live vampire." He said. "You're speaking to one." I said hastily. "Uncle Bill, you know how hard this is for me to believe about vampires?" He made a good point. "Just one. Then we have to leave." I said and told the driver where to go.
We had parked several blocks away from the vampire bar a few miles out of Bon Temps. We didn't want the driver to know about it. I went in, not letting Robert follow and scoped the room, looking for a vampire that would suit Robert's needs. I saw a teen-aged vampire girl. She had been dressed very nicely. I talked to her several times. She became a vampire almost a year ago. I waved her over. Her long black hair, with the top in a bun walked over. "Mary-Anne, I want you to meet someone." I said. I tugged on Mary-Anne's sleeve and she followed when I let go.
I poked my head back out. "How bout a vampire girl, Robert? Your age, very pretty?" I said. He chuckled and nodded. I brought Mary-Anne out and introduced, there was a slight chemistry. I didn't know where it would go. I completely trusted Mary-Anne with Robert and vice versa. Me and Mary-Anne had bonded over being a newly come vampire, so I knew quite a lot about her, she would only feed off strangers, and never ever drained a human.
After hours of the two talking I spotted Robert leaning over and giving Mary-Anne a kiss. Mary-Anne smiled and walked away, her black hair bobbing back and forth with every step she took. Mary-Anne kept the smile on her face and she vanished from my sight. I saw Robert getting tired. It had to have been at least 3am. I fed off a willing human while the two were talking so I was set for the night. I had drove Robert home who snuck through the window and I ran back to Bon Temps.
Chapter 12: More Chemistry
Two nights later, I had no idea if I was going to go to see Robert again. I may go visit him, but if I was gonna, I would have to leave soon. Lorena was sitting on the couch watching the fire. She looked back at me and she gave me a neutral stare which drove me crazy. I had no idea if she was mad at me for my absence two nights ago or anything.
Lorena got up and said, "Go feed. And come straight back here. We need to talk." I did as I was told. I ran to the bar just a few miles away from Bon Temps and landed at the front door of the pub. I walked inside and spotted a human. I had been getting better and better about being able to tell the difference between a human and a vampire.
I fed off her, who already had several fang puncture wounds healing. I made a new pair. I was finicky about that stuff. I finished off with her and then was about to run back when I heard, "Hey Uncle Bill." Robert was behind me, sneaking around with Mary-Anne. He was wearing a dress shirt with a large collar. He tried his best not for anyone to see him and they kept their distance from the pub, which I respected. I was a little worried for Robert, but I knew he would be okay.
"Robert, Mary-Anne." I said to both of them. Robert and Mary-Anne had been clutching each other's hands. Robert heard voices and peered over his shoulder. I saw something odd that was under Robert's collar. I lifted it up and he fussed with me before I almost ripped the shirt. Sure enough there were a pair of puncture marks on Robert's neck. I never met or even heard of a male willing human that wanted to be fed off of.
Mary-Anne let go off Robert's hand and started at the ground. She must've known me and Robert were related. It then hit me that Lorena told me that sometimes when a human and a vampire would have sex that the vampire would bite the human when they "climaxed" is what Lorena called it. I assumed this first. "You having sex with her?" I asked. "You going to marry her?" I asked again. Neither of them said anything. Robert then gave me a look that put me in my place. He shook his head and grabbed his vampire lover's hand and they disappeared into the darkness. I was such an idiot.
I dashed home. Lorena had been sitting on the sofa watching the fire like when I had left. I had only been gone for about 10 minutes. Lorena turned to me, a drop of blood rolled down her cheek. "I've been thinking for day, William. And I thought that you were supposed to be my companion. But the thing is I was hoping to be fond of you. I'm not, William. You're not my companion. I'm not fond of you." My heard sank to my stomach. I was so nervous. Had she found out about Robert. "At least after living with you for about a month, I realized I don't wanna be." She had. She found out about Robert. She hated me and she was going to kill us both. I closed my eyes and opened them. Lorena was standing inches away.
"I want you to be my lover, not companion. And I want to love you, not be fond of you." She said and gently laid a hand on the back of my hair. I had no idea how I felt about Lorena. It was very confusing. I wanted to smother her all the times. Sometimes it could be with a pillow, others, like now, with my very own body. I wanted her. She leaned in and for the first time I accepted the kiss. It felt so right. I kept kissing and kissing. That night we shared a coffin.
Chapter 13: Forbidden
A few weeks passed sense the night of Lorena and myself spending the night together. I was getting used to the fact that Robert was dating Mary-Anne. She was a good girl, but I quickly became so over-protective of Robert, that I still resented her for biting him. I still hoped they wouldn't get married.
I also figured out that Lorena and I were now, sort of, together. We were "with" each other almost every night. Antwan and Catherine hadn't bothered us in some time, which was very nice. We did go to the pub almost every night though. We usually saw Robert and Catherine together. Lorena was worried that by Robert being there, he would put two and two together and figure out we were responsible for Richard. But he was my nephew and he already knew, and I know he would never tell anyone.
We rode in the carriage that night to the pub. It was getting even colder out. All the trees were almost completely bare. The moon was getting very close to full, so it lit up the fields and roads. The carriage came to a complete stop and Lorena and I hopped out, me attached to her arm and vice versa. Mary-Anne spotted me and Robert wasn't with her. My heart sank. She looked at me casually. I wanted to lunge at her. She started to approach me and I walked away from Lorena before she could notice Mary-Anne.
Mary-Anne leaned over the bar to me. "Robert's fine." She said. I looked at her. "I would never hurt him. Well, not to bad anyway, physically that is." She explained to me, and I didn't wanna know about their times in bed. "We broke up." She said. I felt so stupid for thinking she would kill him. She told me she was sorry and went back to the crowd her and Robert would hang around.
Lorena was standing behind me. "Why was Mary-Anne talking to you? And where's that boy from the store she's always with?" Lorena started to put the puzzle together. "Do you know that boy, Bill?" There was silence and i shook my head. "Who is he?" Again, silence. "Cousin? Brother? Nephew?" When the last one came out of her mouth she stopped. "Your nephew, right?" Again, silence. "I order you to stop seeing him or I'll kill him. Pack your bag, Bill." She said and turned her back.
Chapter 14: Goodnight, Travel Well
I headed to Shreveport. I stopped at the front of the store. Robert's window was lit up. It was very late, but he must've been used to his new sleeping schedule. I shuttered at the thought. I climbed the vined gate that had propped up against the outside store wall. I knocked on the window. Robert was doing paper-work. He looked restless. He was wearing a ratty shirt so I could see about three pairs of puncture marks. He opened the window and held a finger to his lips.
"We have to talk." I whispered. "Mary-Anny came and talked to me tonight." Robert rolled his eyes. "Lorena caught us talking. She figured out who you were. She threatened to kill you, Robert." The silence from me and Lorena before was nothing compared to this kind of silence. "We can't see each other. Ever." I said. "Me and Lorena are going to Jacksonville." This silence was dead, hurtful . . . cold. "I have no idea when we'll be back. Even if I come back within your lifetime. We can never see each other again."
Robert hadn't said a word. I had only been in his room for a few minutes. He just stared at me, shocked. No other emotion. Not even sadness or anger or confusion. Just pure shock. I spoke to soon. A look of both depression and rage came over him. His brown eyebrows were arched and his eyes were glassy. Still not a word came over him. He motioned with his head for me to get out. I understood. I was a coward. I could've just told Lorena to go to hell. But instead I was running away with her to Jacksonville.
He closed the window and he locked it and watched me leap down. I stopped at the bottom of the window. I stared at the full moon, wondering if what I just did was right. I wondered if I should just go back upstairs and offer to run away with him. I knew, in the end, this was the best thing. I could still feel him watching me walk away into the darkness. I turned to look. Sure enough. His dark shadow, casted over the illuminated window. I stared. He turned his back and seconds later, I did too.
Chapter 15: Jacksonville, 6 Years Later
I woke up in my coffin. It was summer. Lorena had already been awake for a few minutes. We were in the cellar. The basic design (furniture, windows) was almost exactly like our house back in Bon Temps. I went upstairs and Lorena was getting ready to go out. The pub in Jacksonville was much more extravagant then the one in Bon Temps.
We had a different driver, and a new horse, as ours died just after we arrived in Jacksonville. Butters, Lorena's first horse, was a Carmel colored horse with a snow white mane. He lived to be almost 18 years old. Our new horse was just 3. I got to name him. I wanted to name him Robert but Lorena forbidden it. So I decided to name him, Sunny. I said it was because he was a very light and radiant brown, which he was, but because that's what Robert's dad called him when he was a baby, and me and my wife also called Robert that when he was a kid.
I decided to get ready too. In minutes we were in the carriage heading to the bar. The bar was much bigger and more filled with people. It was three floors, the second floor was a balcony over-looking the first. It had tables and couches and chairs. The third floor was a hotel. Both of us fed off of the humans that wanted us to feed off of them. I didn't even know vampires existed when I was human, let alone these type of humans.
We went back home and Lorena threw herself at me. Frankly, I just simply wasn't in the mood. I rejected her and she got angry. "What's your problem?!" She yelled.
"Nothing." I said. "Just don't want to do it tonight." "Oh, please. Gimme a break." "What's that supposed to mean?" "You've been such a baby and so distant lately. News flash, Bill! We left Bon Temps six years ago, not six days!" She yelled. That stuck a nerve for me. I gave her a look that told her how much I wanted to tear her throat out.
"I realize it was six years ago. And I realize how much you've forgotten about being a human. Remember what else happened six years ago? I walked into your house. I was a Confederate soldier, looking for a place to rest my head for the night. Instead all I got was an eternity with a heartless bitch!" She slapped me. I was stunned, but instead of just walking out I pushed her. She stumbled back and tackled me to the ground. She bit me and spit out my blood onto me. I grabbed her wrist as she went to punch me and threw her into the air.
I got up and she just looked at me. Her hair was all messed up from when the back of her head hit the ground. "Get out." She said. I looked at her, wanting to know to myself if I should ask her to stay, for my sake. But before I could decide she yelled, "Get out!" She grabbed me by my shirt collar and threw me out of the door. She got a bag and put my clothes in it and threw it at me from inside.
I didn't know what exactly what I should do. Then I decided to steal her horse and her carriage. I was going back to Bon Temps, not knowing if I'd ever see Lorena again. I didn't even know if Robert was still in Bon Temps, let alone, alive. I mean, it had only been 6 years, but with diseases and the vampires who knows?
Chapter 16: "Partsish's"
I parked my carriage. Well, I stole it, but it was now mine. I was in Shreveport. It was not really late at night. I buried myself somewhere in the forest along the way and I had just gotten up no more then an hour and a half ago.
I looked at the clear window and green lettering that read "Partsish's". The window was lit up with several candles directly in the window sill. I didn't know if I should walk toward the door, but I felt myself move, before my brain could even click. I didn't stop. The bell rang as I stepped inside. A young red-headed woman was behind the counter.
My eyes scanned through the shelves. From what I could tell when I was outside, there was no one upstairs. I guessed Robert and/or Kevin could've went somewhere, but I never knew that they had other employees. I waited for Robert to come through the door. Taller, possibly with a wife and kids? I don't know.
I waited and wondered who exactly the young woman was. Was this Robert's wife? She finally spoke to me. "Can I help you find something?" She had a squeaky little voice that told me she wasn't very bright. I smiled at her.
"Someone . . . ?" I asked. "Who?" "Robert Partsish." A few-second silence fell between the two of us before a light clicked in her head. "Mr. Partsish? The owner? Yeah, I've met him a few times. He's cute." She said and giggled. "But I think he lives somewhere in Blanchard now. He drops by from time to time."
I wanted to ask if he had any wife or kids, but I thought I'd find out for myself. I thanked the girl and left for Blanchard. It was a rather short trip. Blanchard was a town just outside of Shreveport. So it was a kind of relief that it would be possible to see him in just a few minutes.
Chapter 17: "Things Have Changed . . . "
I pulled up at several stores asking if any of them knew where Robert may be. almost every single one of them knew who I was talking about, but none of them knew exactly where Robert was. The last store owner that I spoke with told me he jumped around cities a lot, and he might be in New Orleans.
New Orleans! New Orleans?! That's just great. Lorena could be right hot on my trail and there was a huge chance I wouldn't able to see Robert....at all! "I heard him talking bout him going down to New Orleans for a few weeks. But that Robert always he's going somewhere for a few weeks and comes back in just days. Last time he was in Jacksonville and he said he was going for almost a month, he came back a week and a half later....He's a real striker, that Robert Partsish. Too bad he's married." Well there was confirmation. The thirty something year old had a thick southern accent.
It was sort of a relief to hear that Robert wouldn't be gone for long. And I wondered if Robert may have seen me in Jacksonville, and I just missed him. It almost frustrated me. I mean he knew I was there, did he come to look for me and just get cold feet?
I left the store. A carriage strode passed me, the back was illuminated with a candle. I could tell from feet away the seats were a rich red. It was a very rich man's carriage. Mine was descent and I had to wait for this one to pass sense mine was on the other side. I may have been a vampire, but I was no rude vampire, and if I used my vampire speed I could easily get to my carriage before they could reach me. But I didn't wanna scare their horse and cause an accident.
They strode passed me and a gorgeous blond woman looked at me. She had beautiful hair and from what I could tell was wearing a baby blue dress. A man sat on the other side of her and I couldn't exactly see his face. But then I heard him yell, "Stop!" The woman looked at him. It wasn't my business, so I walked. Then I heard the carriage door open and the man's voice spoke to me "Bill Compton?" I turned around and there was Robert. 6 years older, brown hair, stubble, 3 inches taller, he now stood at least 6'4. He was wearing an incredible tuxedo. However, he didn't look happy. The woman strode out and by Robert's side. They were an amazing looking couple. They were both so gorgeous and...wow! I guess they're first kid will probably good looking too. Things sure have changed.
