| ALL ABOUT SHAPE SHIFTERS If you know a thing or two about our furry friends, now's your chance to speak up and share your knowledge with our community! |
|
| SUPES: | Any Supernatural Being can be called a Supe - Vampires, Weres, Shifters, Maenads, Gods and Goddesses and all kinds of critters |
| Shape Shifters | Shape Shifters of some sort have appeared in almost every culture. They are generally able to change whenever they choose, though some of them must change at the Full Moon. In True Blood, a shape shifter can become any animal s/he chooses, or sometimes turns into the last animal they saw. Sam Merlotte keeps a painting of a collie in his office, because that is his preferred form. The most famous Shape shifter is Dracula, who could become both a wolf and a bat. |
| | |
| Weres | The most familiar Were is of course the classic Wolf Man, or Werewolf. The curse of the werewolf and the illness in which one believes themselves to transform into a wolf is called lycanthropy. In True Blood, only Werewolves are called Weres. Others specify the animal they become - Were-Tigers, Were-Panthers, etc. |
| Theriomorph | In The Dresden Files any thing that shape-shifts from human form to animal form is called a Theriomorph. Example: Lupine theriomorphs include all kinds of wolf-related shifters.
Other theriomorphs include: were-panthers, were-bears, were-tigers etc..... |
| Berserkers | The Berserkers, pronounced bare-sarkers, were a breed of Viking Warriors who experienced a kind of rage in battle called berserkergang. During the berserkergang, they were believed to be impervious to weapons, though they wore no armor. They often wore wolf or bear skins to frighten the enemy, and some were said to actually turn into their animal. After the battle, when the rage subsided, the Berserkers were left in a weakened state as though they had been ill. The Berserkers drew their strength from Odin and were believed to have the power to imbue weapons with magic. |
| | |
| Skin-Walkers | In Navajo culture, the Skin-Walker is a kind of Sorcerer who can take the form of various animals, especially by wearing the skin of that animal. They were also believed to be able to borrow another person's skin or body by looking into their eyes. They were sometimes believed to take an mutated form of the animal and human, like the Wolf Man, called therianthropy. |
| Lon Chaney, Jr., The Wolf Man, 1941 | As Larry Talbot, Lon Chaney, Jr. became the Cinema's most famous face of The Wolf Man. During a visit to a 'Gypsy palm reader who is spooked when she sees a pentagram in Talbot's palm, he is warned of impending danger. Later, he is attacked by a wolf and finds that he has become cursed to become a therianthropic wolf on the night of the full moon. | ||
| Michael Landon, I Was a Teen-aged Werewolf, 1957 | I Was a Teen-aged Werewolf. Lycanthropy as symbol of the trials of puberty became a popular theme in the movies, the most popular of which was Michael J. Fox's Teen Wolf from 1985. | ||
| David Selby as Quentin Collins in Dark Shadows | Dark Shadows, the first Gothic soap opera on daytime TV, mesmerized audiences in the 60s with their vampires and other members of the undead. Heartthrob David Selby played cursed lycanthrope Quentin Collins, an artist who longed to become human once again by eating the bloom of the wolf-bane plant on the night of the full moon before his animal nature could consume him and drive him to kill. | ||
| Feminism hit the Were community big time in 2000 with the release of Ginger Snaps. Sisters Ginger and Brigitte are obsessed with death and dealing with a curse of a different kind wherein menstruation is symbolized by lycanthropy. | ||
| Who: Michael Sheen As Lucian From: Underworld | In the movies Underworld and Underworld : Evolution, Lycans, or Werewolves, were once slaves of vampires, acting as their daytime guardians. The Lycans rebelled when Lucian's Vampire lover was killed by her own father for carrying a Were/Vamp hybrid child. In the first movie, Lucian leads a rebellion against the aristocratic Vamps as he seeks to combine the two species in a descendant of the first Vampire and Werewolf who were brothers in the Corvinus line. | ||
| Who: Scott Speedman as Michael Corvin From:Underworld | What: Werewolf/Vampire hybrid - the super SUPE! As warrior Selene (Kate Beckinsale) is tracking werewolves, she notices the pack is following a young med student named Michael Corvin. Unbeknown-st to Michael, he is a descendant of the Corvinus clan, who spawned the first Vampire and Werewolf in the persons of two brothers, one bitten by a bat, one bitten by a wolf. The Werewolf leader Lucian hopes to turn Michael into a Vampire/Werewolf hybrid, which would be stronger than both and might bring an end to the war between the species. | ||
| Who: Benicio Del Toro From: Wolf Man | What: In 2009 audiences will get a remake of the classic Wolf Man starring Benicio Del Toro. | ||
| Who: Jack Nicholson & Michelle Pfeiffer From: WOLF | What: Werewolf who eventually becomes a wolf for good. Mild-mannered Editor Will Randall (Nicholson) hits what he thinks is a dog with his car after a party where he finds out he'll probably lose his job. When he gets out to help the animal, it turns out to be a wolf which bites him and runs off. As the full moon approaches, Randall begins to feel livelier - and wilder - than ever before. Things heat up when he meets his boss's black sheep daughter Laura Alden (Pfeiffer) who has a wild streak of her own. WOLF was released in 1994 and also starred James Spader. | ||
| From: Bad Moon | What: Werewolf Uncle Ted (Michael Pare), who has a secret, turns to his family's love to cure him from his curse. Finds his only redemption is through the family dog, Thor. | ||
| From: An American Werewolf in London | What: Werewolves The locals told them to stay off of the moors. Two Americans backpacking across Europe should have heeded the warning. One ends up as dinner while the other ends up in the hospital, until the moon is full, that is, when he becomes An American Werewolf in London (released in 1981) | ||
| | What: Were-panthers Cat People The first release from 1942 film is a masterpiece of Noir film-making and the creature is more suggested than shown. The principle character, Irena, has no idea of her heritage. In the 1944 sequel The Curse of the Cat People, Irena's spirit haunts the daughter of her former lover, who has trouble distinguishing between reality and fantasy. Despite the lurid title, the film is actually a sort of noir coming of age film with very little horror. The 1982 film featured Natassia Kinksi in her film debut and a David Bowie soundtrack. The plot darkens as Irena discovers that her parents were brother and sister, and now her only hope of having a relationship is to mate with her evil brother, Paul (Malcolm McDowell.) Paul has no conflict with his need to kill when he mates, but Irena chooses a path of self-sacrifice rather than put the man she loves at risk. | ||
| | Okay, I know what you are thinking...but hear me out. The Shaggy Dog grossed more at the box-office than Ben Hur. It talked about the legend of the Borgia family who used shape-shifting against their enemies. And it featured Fred McMurray. This film is a light-hearted romp in black and white and is well worth seeing. It maintains a Disney-esque feel without becoming saccharin or silly. And it features shape-shifting, so it is relevant, right? This all applies to the 1959 original and not to the horrid 2006 Tim Allen remake. There was a 1976 sequel (The Shaggy DA) which wasn't too bad and 1988 Made-for-TV continuation of the series but they lacked the charm and balance of the original. | ||
| | What: Wolverine, from the X-men. He's a human that has been modified and now "changes" at will. | ||
| | What: Odo, one of the "Founders" from Star Trek Deep Space Nine, can change to other forms from his natural form (gelatinous blob). He's not very good at forming a humanoid because he was raised in a bucket. | ||
| Who: Michelle Pfeiffer From: LadyHawke | What: Shifters who are cursed to change form at night Ladyhawke, like Princess Fiona from Shrek, was one form by day, another by night, but neither could change at will. In a twist on half-day curse, Sir Gawain marries "loathly" Dame Ragnelle to find that she is a beauty under a curse. Because a Good Knight has married her, she may be beautiful either in the day when they are with others or at night when they are alone. When she asks him to choose, he acknowledges her own sovereignty by letting the choice be hers and frees her of the spell completely. | ||

| | What:This website came in handy for me when I started to read up on the subject of Lycans. It is a documented Therianthropy Timeline dated clear back 140,000 BCE. | | What: |
| | What: The Maenad (mythical creature) that is seen at the end of Episode 10 on True Blood with her boar standing in the middle of the road when Tara wrecks her car. Maenads were females devotees of Dionysus, the greek god of wine. Often they would dance and enter a frenzy state of sex, drinking and they would loose all self control. In this state they would go into the forest to hunt and kill animals even humans with their own bare hands, sometimes devouring them. Vampire Lover's: United We Stand! I read at the Daily News that 2009 is the year of the Lycans. Underworld, The Wolf Man (with Benicio Del Toro) and Twilight (is a vampire movie, but Edward's character wil be fighting for Bella's love with a werewolf) are the movies that will be trying to detrone our favorite heroes/lovers.
Sorry, but no hairy creature can compete with our beloved vampires Bill Compton and Eric Northman.
