(This started as a thread on the Discussion Forum under a different title...) violetmaster Sep 7 2008, 10:37 PM EDT umm... ok, I am a Louisiana resident. NO ONE talks like that. It was so embarrassing to watch a show so rife with cliche. I was really looking forward to the show, and will give it only one more chance, but man, it was absolutely ridiculous. The acting is atrocious, and I expected WAY more from the creator of Six Feet Under, one of my all-time favorite shows. Try harder! Lose the fake accents! No One calls anyone chere'. No one! My friend and almost vomited from that. Awful! ScarltsMmy Sep 7 2008, 10:41 PM EDT You have to look past the accents. The Closer has the WORST attempt at an Atlanta accent ever!! I'm in Atlantas..never heard that before. I thought the show was great!!. funkyspunky871 Sep 7 2008, 10:54 PM EDT Whew. The accents were pretty bad. (I'm from Mississippi, baby! lol) And, damnit, Anna Paquin made a horrible Sookie. She just can't act! Stephen Moyer... Was amazing, though. Especially considering he's English! Sieraa Sep 7 2008, 11:23 PM EDT I found it somewhat difficult to understand even twlight Sep 7 2008, 11:28 PM EDT ok, I live in Louisiana too and I do have to agree that the accents were a little much. However, I live in Lafayette and around here people do say Chere' and they say Sha a lot too. So that part is possible. Im kinda annoyed by the accents, but this isnt the first show or movie to portray south Louisiana as having hick accents. At least no one was wearing those "Bubba Teeth." All and all, Anna was awesome and Im looking forward to this series! and i cant believe her brother killed that girl! surprise! gothicfan Sep 7 2008, 11:38 PM EDT Not impressed with the show in general- accents suck and the acting isn't much better (from any of the cast members). I'll give it one more try. After that, back to the Buffy reruns. FeyGirlz Sep 7 2008, 11:39 PM EDT In the books Rene is acadian so he talks that way, chere. Yes, I know some of the thick accents were bad but this is supposed to be a very rural place - give the first book a try and see if it makes more sense to y'all (by the way I'm from rural Tennessee - you've not heard hick till you come here!). I really enjoyed this 1 episode and hope they keep it up (literally) - pretty true to the books, sex & all! FantomAngel Sep 7 2008, 11:55 PM EDT I've read the entire series through 3 times and of course nothing is ever as great as the books, however I'm capable of appreciating the adaptation of the Sookie stories. I'm surprised at anyone who would expect that hollywood would portray us southerners (from Tennessee here) with a true southern accent. We've been the butt of those hick stereotypes and will probably continue for some time. Looking past the obvious I really enjoyed the show! No it's not exactly like Charlaine's original stories but that's what keeps me watching and not being able to completely predict the story line. If I want the original I only have to read the books again but I found this show extremely entertaining and can't wait until next week's show. Loosen up folks and just enjoy the story line this was only the first episode and all stories have to start somewhere. SouthernRoots Sep 8 2008, 12:32 AM EDT I'm a Louisiana resident also from a great little rural town in the northern part of the state....and unfortunately, some of our accents actually DO sound a little like those on the show. LA is a diverse State with all kinds of cultures and accents.....even some who say "chere". Keep in mind that just because you live in the South - that not all southern accents (even in the same state) sound the same! Besides isn't the author, Charlaine Harris from rural south Arkansas? Maybe that is how the accents sound in her town???? sookierocks Sep 8 2008, 12:57 AM EDT I don't normally post on discussion forums. All this lovely negativity is so thrilling, not! I personally like it. And I went truck driving with my dad one summer when I was a teen and most of the rural areas of the southern states, i did find people who talk like that! I appreciate that everyone has a opinion and hey for those who posted on this thread that said the show was crap, then please don't watch the show and please dont come here spewing your venom, if you dont like it, then dont watch and dont spoil the peacefulness that has been this site and forum since I started on here last week. Warmsunshine Sep 8 2008, 1:30 AM EDT Have to agree with everyone here saying that the accents were completely stupid. It's like they just decided, "hey, let's just say everything with a twang, that's Louisiana enough!" and went on about their business. Maybe TPTB aren't paying the actors enough to do any actual research about the South. They certainly doesn't seem like they are paying the writers enough. About the only actual "Louisiana" stuff I think got put into the show was the fact that we use Parishes rather than Counties. I would have rathered the characters have no accents rather than the garbage they were using. Best actor this ep? Sam. He was one of the few people other than Bill not taking large bites out of the scenery in every scene he was in. Worst? Tara. Hands down. Sucked. Dial it back to a 9, sister. You got the job. It was like watching Over the Top Acting 101. By they way, why couldn't they give us a butt shot of Jason though? That would have been at least somewhat interesting. Finally, it was a bit too confusing with Sookie's "impressions". I wasn't sure whether people knew that she was telepathic or not. Some scenes implied that they knew, and then right afterwards, the opposite was implied. Confusing and annoying. Overall, I give it a 4 out of 10. I'll stick with it for another few eps, but it had better start getting better, and soon! Plumtoad Sep 8 2008, 1:51 AM EDT "Finally, it was a bit too confusing with Sookie's "impressions". I wasn't sure whether people knew that she was telepathic or not. Some scenes implied that they knew, and then right afterwards, the opposite was implied. Confusing and annoying. "Actually, it started like that in the books too. Sookie, quite understandably, doesn't talk about her ability, and in fact tries to hide it. It makes people uncomfortable. Its sort of an open secret, I guess. (Would you want to be around someone who could read your thoughts? Gives me the creeps just thinking about it.) I thought they did the mind reading thing very well. I was afraid it would be completely over the top and impossible to deal with, but they kept it sort of low key. I really enjoyed the show. It was fun seeing the other characters brought to life. But I hope they make sure the vampires are clean eaters. I enjoy vampire shows, but I HATE that they make them sloppy eaters. So many vampires we see are clean and stylish and whatnot, but they dont know how to use a napkin. I mean really, after 500 years (or however long), they haven't learned to not dribble down their chin? (sorry, big pet-peeve) Memnoch9 Sep 11 2008, 12:00 AM EDT Wow! So many people sweatin' the small stuff....who cares about the accents (only people from the south I'm guessin'). I agree accents should be correct but as stated in this discussion, some people actually talk like that. So, for the sake of this fictional show, lets say that the people in this part of the south speak like that and move on to more important topics. I thought all in all the show was great. I haven't read any of the books which leaves my expectations wide open. I always think it is better to read the books second cause the books are usually better. I thought the actors/actresses where great. A little bit of cheese in there but pretty good I thought. Also, so many people complaining about the sex. This is a show for grown ups. Your little ones should be nowhere near when you watch. That's why they put the warning on before the start of all shows....you know nudity, violence, sexual situations, etc...... m.kenney Sep 11 2008, 12:28 PM EDT I was shocked at the vulgar and unnecessary cursing and sexual innuendo. This is really supposed to be a love story in a relatively kinky way. What HBO can do does not necessarily mean they should. OHHHHH I can say FUCK!!! Yepee!!! Harris could also be crude, however she just choses not to be because that is not the development she wants to create within the characters. Ball should respect this. Harris created a sensual atmosphere in her books without the use of cursing and gratuitous sexual innuendo. Ball has created crude language and gratuitous sex scenes which makes the viewer looks upon the story with a feeling of dirty tawdriness. ICK! Perfect example: What was with the talk about pussy in the kitchen? I was disappointed in this and in the Tara character who was completely unlikable and a woman Sookie would have NEVER been friends with. And completely unrealistic. It is very rare that a southerner would be so rude, especially at work, to a total stranger! Hopefully Ball will kill her off soon! Other than that, it was fun watching and I can't wait for next week even though I know what's coming. Ball, please stop with the crude remarks!!! rcm35 Sep 11 2008, 12:52 PM EDT "Harris created a sensual atmosphere in her books without the use of cursing and gratuitous sexual innuendo. Ball has created crude language and gratuitous sex scenes which makes the viewer looks upon the story with a feeling of dirty tawdriness.Contrary to your statement above, the books had their fair share cursing and quite a few fairly explicit sex scenes. Granted some of those shown in Episode 1 did not come from the book, however we have to expect 'artistic license' and we all know know that 'sex sells'. I don't think that the show would be worth watching if it had been adapted to run on the Family Channel. As for your comments regarding southern manners, I grew up in the deep south and southerners are just as capable as anyone else of incredible rudeness and crudeness in public or private. I have been all over this country and have found that no one region is more polite than another. Some accents are merely harsher than the southern drawl and may not sound as friendly and inviting to someone who listens only to the accent and not the content. m.kenney Sep 11 2008, 1:13 PM EDT "Contrary to your statement above, the books had their fair share cursing and quite a few fairly explicit sex scenes. But here, in Charleston, THAT IS SOUTH CAROLINA, I have NEVER heard anyone speak the way this character did at her job in the hardware store. And I am 48 years old. Maybe you just surrounded yourself around rude and crude people. And you obviously did not read the same series as I. Harris did not feel the need to curse in her books moreover, Sookie loathed it. It's very childish to used constant and uncalled for foul language. And as far as the sex goes.....Sookie made love to her partners, it was NEVER dirty or gratuitous. It was erotic (a little wild) without being dirty. Maybe you do not know the difference.....Too bad. drazzil Sep 11 2008, 2:22 PM EDT SAM Calls sookie chere in the books that wear that came from but only a few times.Yes the accents were a little fake but then they are becouse non of the actors are southern so i think they will mellow out one they get used to speaking that way. ( Hope) But I do Like the show though. I am willing to give it a chance. I love the books and was so excited about the show so I am very optimistic that it will be a great show once it is fully up and running. Reginabee Sep 11 2008, 2:24 PM EDT "So sorry to disagree. She also scrumps: Living Dead in Dallas, Chapter 9, Page 228: "As I unlocked the front door, Bill came out of the darkness. Without a word, he grabbed my arm and turned me to him, and then he kissed me. ....... We stumbled into the house, and he turned me to face the couch. I gripped it with my hands and, just as I'd imagined, he pulled down my pants, and then he was in me. I made a hoarse noise I'd never heard come from my throat before. Bill was making noises equally as primitive. I didn't think I could form a word. His hands were under my sweater, and my bra was in two pieces. He was relentless. I almost collapsed after the first time I came. "No," he growled when I was flagging and he kept pounding. ...." I'd just love to see a director translate that into a screenplay and keep it from being dirty. LOL! Oh, and I'm from Aiken, THAT IS IN SOUTH CAROLINA (:-0) and I have friends and family in CHARLESTON, HILTON HEAD and various and sundry locations throughout the state and I can assure you that I HAVE heard people speak that way. Granted, there are not very many store employees who would dare to speak that way to a customer, but then again, Tara knew she was going to lose her job anyway so it hardly matters. Docwindy Sep 11 2008, 2:47 PM EDT I TOTALLY agree. This show took the sensuality and yes sex from Harris' books and made it lewd and tawdry. The horrible accents and over acting only added compounded both. It came acros cheap and just plain nasty. I will also give it one more try and if it doesn't get better I will stick with the books. Vampbiatch*69* Sep 11 2008, 3:20 PM EDT First and fore most I dont care if u think it was total crap...its t.v. get into the books they dont have to be on all of the ways things really are..be serious we know Vamps dont exist so live out of the box instead of in it! LOVE THE SHOW CAN'T wait for more!!!!!!!! MireilleJ Sep 11 2008, 4:00 PM EDT I Lived in a small province in Canada called New-Brunswick and in that itty bitty place, every area had their own accent. And talking as a Cajun cousin, (I'm Acadian) I believe that there probably is small towns with thick accents in Louisiana. I've already met people from there with very thick accents. Also I adore this show, its quirkiness. The only acting that I have an issue with is Anna Paquin, as I said in another thread, she tries too hard to be the southern belle, but I see a great future to this show if people give it a chance. Also, if you hate the show...why are you on this site? MireilleJ Sep 11 2008, 4:02 PM EDT I love how trashy this show is!!! I found it hilarious. I never got attached to a show so quick. Probably comes from being from a small town myself and recognizing its corniness. Sookie's brother is a whore mongler, therefore the sex should be seen as cheap and plain nasty...shouldn't it? mrsgillespie Sep 11 2008, 4:35 PM EDT I am a big Sookie fan and reread the books this summer to be ready for the show. I think it's going to be good, it just wasn't all that great the first ep. A lot of shows aren't -but years later you laugh at those first eps on dvd cause they are so cheesy. The only character I wasn't that impressed with was Tara. I don't know why, but I always pictured her as the one with class. She had a truly traumatic childhood but grew into a wonderful woman. The character in the show is just trash. And why is she at Merlotte's? Did HBO run out of set money? Just seems strange to me. That being said, I am excited about this show and plan on watching it this season. rcm35 Sep 11 2008, 5:21 PM EDT "So sorry to disagree. We are all here to share our opinions and there is no need to get nasty just because someone disagrees with yours. Your personal attack statements just go to show that people from Charleston can be downright rude and the fact that you didn't curse does not make it less rude. I happen to have grown up in Sumter, and yes that is in SC as well. deadindixie Sep 11 2008, 6:59 PM EDT one everybody i dont think they were trying to make pun of accents its a tv show there actors i have read all the books an so far the show good ya the cursing is more then the book but all the people who r watching didn't read the books its hbo what did u exspect relax its all good trinitygood Sep 11 2008, 10:29 PM EDT "I'm a Louisiana resident also from a great little rural town in the northern part of the state....and unfortunately, some of our accents actually DO sound a little like those on the show. LA is a diverse State with all kinds of cultures and accents.....even some who say "chere".I agree with SouthernRoots my father is from shreveport la and he has quite a twang, he sounds more cajun, his wife is from a different part of the state and has a totally different infelction in her accent. I don't think i ever heard my dad say "Chere", but i have gotten quite a few "purt nears" and "fixin to". And have heard several of his relatives sound quite hick-ish. The south is like say china with different dilects, the south has many different accents ALANAIELENTARI Sep 11 2008, 10:57 PM EDT Well when it comes to accents and such, I find it very easy, to listen to someone elses manner of speaking. TAKE ME FOR INSTANCE: My parents were second generation Basque, on the island of Puerto Rico. I mastered my english so well, I now think in english, although I can speak fluent spanish. My accent is picked up as Slavic, by most persons...imagine that...! I am blond, with brown eyes, and created three children with blue eyes, since I have the genes for blue eyes. I love people and all their differences, if we all looked or sounded alike this would be a dull world. My daughter is totally a Southern Belle in Florida--she does not sound slavic-thank God. Enjoy it all! Bloodsister Sep 11 2008, 11:24 PM EDT I'm sorry, if you believe the accents were wrong... I live in the South, too, and I understand. The cliches about Georgia are stereotypical too, and do not represent the majority of the people who live here. ("The Dukes of Hazzard" and "Gone With The Wind are obvious examples.) I read the books,(FUN series!!) and I can say that they got the plot of the story right, and I have to say most of the characters are how I pictured them. One of the preview shows for "True Blood" said that the majority of the actors are from other places- England, Australia, New Zealand- so I can let it slide that their accents or dialect isn't perfect. I'm into the STORY.... Read the books, if you haven't, and you might see the difference...Charlaine is from the South, and I don't believe she ever wrote a word that made me think she was insulting the people of Louisiana. Also, Sam Merlotte is in love with Sookie, and I think that "chere" is just his endearment for her, personally, not a culturally definitive word. Just some friendly food for thought, no offense intended, I promise!! Take care! Have a great night! Sookie Sep 11 2008, 11:33 PM EDT I completely understand people having problem with the accents but that's just the way the public opinion will always be of Louisiana. I am from Dallas and when I tell people that they immediately ask me if I have a horse, whether I wear cowboy boots or cowboy hat, and I can almost tell that they are waiting for me to say things like "Ya'll" and "Reckon". I do not speak like that at all but I have come to terms that people will always think that Texas is like that as a whole. Bloodsister Sep 11 2008, 11:47 PM EDT "I completely understand people having problem with the accents but that's just the way the public opinion will always be of Louisiana. I have met people new to the Atlanta area who think we are all like Jeff Foxworthy's "Redneck Jokes"!! I personally don't use the phrases "Y'all" or "Fixin to" and I don't know anyone who met their spouse at a family reunion!! (HAHA!) but it's comical, and I take it in stride...Most people from outside the South have no other picture of us than what they see on TV or in the movies, so we all should show our good sense of humor and graciousness that are also well-known traits of Southerners, so they can get a more positive picture of who we are! nynygurl Sep 12 2008, 3:29 PM EDT Okay, I totally don't agree with you about the acting. Both the characters who play Tara and Dawn went to Julliard, the best place for acting. I think everyone else did really well. You have the right to say things about Louisiana because you're from there. nynygurl Sep 12 2008, 3:30 PM EDT "Whew. The accents were pretty bad. At first I didn't think she would be good but when I saw her, blonde hair and all, she is completely Sookie Stackhouse. nynygurl Sep 12 2008, 3:32 PM EDT Word!!! This show rocks!!! nynygurl Sep 12 2008, 3:33 PM EDT Totally. This show is on HBO, not prime time. There will be boobs, there will be sex. nynygurl Sep 12 2008, 4:06 PM EDT That was hot! nynygurl Sep 12 2008, 4:20 PM EDT it's part of Jason's character makeup. MireilleJ Sep 12 2008, 10:28 PM EDT Reginabee, Bravo...You just pulled a Tara, putting someone who sounds stupid in their place. Hahaha. I can't wait to read the books, I haven't yet, but I ordered the first three. The first episode was great! R-Rated Sep 12 2008, 10:56 PM EDT I think they are trying to be alittle funny and serious at the same time and besides its Hollywood when have they not used stereotypes to make a movie,tv show and commecials. prettered1977 Sep 13 2008, 12:21 AM EDT I do like the sexiness of this show; However, I'm from Mississippi and have relatives in Louisiana as well. People can debate all they want but, this show has the worst accents I've ever heard in my life. I was watching it and hoped that someone would come in and say, "Cut! We we're just kidding; Now, the real show will start!" I am African American as well and for the African American girl, best friend of Sookie's, to have that accent is totally unrealistic! I love the plot and storylines. I hate the accents! arete66 Sep 13 2008, 12:43 AM EDT Eh, I'm over worrying about such kind of crap in a show that's about vampires and psychics. Yeah, other than the accents, the show was entirely believable! Get over it. I live in the Silicon Valley and whenever it's portrayed, everyone is a geeky computer programmer wearing a pocket protector, or if they're from San Francisco, they're gay. All regions suffer from stereotyping in TV shows. As for Anna Paquin not being a good actor as others have said in this thread, what TV show are you watching? To me, she's nailing the innocent, small town waitress thing perfectly. You want to see bad acting by a woman in a lead role on a Sci Fi series? Check out the cardboard cutout on "Fringe" or harken back to that poor excuse for estrogen on "The Bionic Woman". Now *that's* crap. nynygurl Sep 13 2008, 7:11 PM EDT i totally agree but ahhh, i loved the actress on the bionic woman! But yes, Anna Paquin nails the innocent and naive Sookie. :) nynygurl Sep 13 2008, 7:12 PM EDT "I think they are trying to be alittle funny and serious at the same time and besides its Hollywood when have they not used stereotypes to make a movie,tv show and commecials."I found the books to be funny and serious, so HBO is doing a good job. dallasmc Sep 14 2008, 1:20 PM EDT Ms. Charlaine is actually from Mississippi although she now lives in Arkansas. rubyeuropa Sep 14 2008, 7:35 PM EDT "I was shocked at the vulgar and unnecessary cursing and sexual innuendo. Ball should respect this.I'd not heard of this author/series of books until I heard about this show, so I don't know about any comparisons, but as someone coming in 'blind' to the show, I thought it was a great debut. Intriguing, the right amount of creepiness and spookiness, and very vivid, quirkly characters. The sex didn't bother me; this is HBO, after all. Were they gratuitous? I guess that depends on your point of view, and your own comfort level with sex scenes? Given the context of the episode, setting up the characters, and the out-there quality of the show and the characters, I didn't see it as gratuitous. I also thought the cursing wasn't overboard. They all work in a bar, not the local library, lol. As for Ball respecting the author's wishes, why should he? Any adaptation of a book, to the big screen or the small screen, is the producer's and director's interpretation of the story and the characters, not the author's. All viewers can hope for (whether you are coming to the show fresh or having read the books first) is that the characters and the story developments are credible, believable. And only ratings will tell if they succeed in that regard. As far as rudeness, the south isn't any more immune to rudeness than anywhere else in the United States. Or the world for that matter. Sadly. Now my dilemma is, do I dive into the books now, and then be spoiled for the show? Or wait until at least this season ends, and then be spoiled for the books? :) tomsan Sep 14 2008, 7:43 PM EDT "umm... ok, I am a Louisiana resident. NO ONE talks like that. The list can go on for the places I have been within the state and I have to say, YES people do talk like that. This is a very diverse state with many different people and backgrounds, If you are wondering about mine you can trace my family all the way back to a French Governer. The character of Rene, the Cajun dude, fakes a Cajun accent in the book! So the actor is actually playing the character as written! I'm going to keep on watching this show, because i loved Ms. Harris' books, and looking forward to seeing more episodes. I could care less about the 'unacceptable accents' because, frankly i can't tell the difference. I found the 2 episodes entertaining, and pretty much the same as the books except for a few liberties that Mr. Ball has taken in changing the story & the characters. I find Ms Paquin's performance to be a breath of fresh air, and loved her chemistry with 'Bill' and have nothing negative to say about the other characters either. Of course I found it strange at how much Tara's character in the show differs from the books, and mostly laughed at how 'dumb' Jason is, but will that stop me from enjoying the show. Hell no! Am i going to dissect every little thing, including accents, the acting etc? Hell no! I'm going to keep on watching in spite of the negativity, and looking forward to seeing more ofSookie, Bill, and all the others. sarahchristine Sep 16 2008, 12:33 AM EDT HONESTLY THAT IS SUCH A WONDERFUL SHOW AND THE ACTING IS AWSOME AS FOR THE ACCENT WHO CARES I REALLY AM GETTING INTO THIS SHOW, HEY I NEED MY ESCAPE JUST LIKE THE NEXT GUY OR GAL AND GUESS WHAT I DON'T THINK IT IS REAL BUT I SURE DO GET INTO THE SCENES AND BILL IS AWSOM YUMMY. Reginabee Sep 16 2008, 9:20 AM EDT "I believe they could have had every single actor or actress from my neck of the woods and some people would still complain. You are absolutely correct. . nikilynne Sep 16 2008, 9:42 AM EDT If you read the series, It's easy to point out all of the differences and feel some disappointment when seeing the show. I am one of these people. But... I am not letting my high hopes ruin my opinion of the show. Although, there are some things that I don't care for in the show that I would feel the same about even if I hadn't read the books. I don't like that they mentioned Hurricane Katrina in the very beginning, that didn't come until later in the series, that kinda threw me off and made no sense to me. I agree that Tara's character is too over the top and the change to her character vs. the book version of Tara is not a positive one. I am well aware that Alan Ball has the liberty to basically do what he wants with the show, it's just a tad bit annoying to see her so uppity and intolerant. I agree with those who say they are putting way too much emphasis on her character. And the "black and oppressed" attitude is obnoxious. The over-acting is obvious, it may not be so bad if it was a bit more inconspicuous. I guess that he may be trying to appeal to a larger audience by adding elements that really didn't exist in the books. (i.e. the "ghetto" party, the excessive use of sex scenes, some of the exaggerated vampires, etc...) Overall, I enjoy tuning in on Sunday nights. I will continue to watch it. I think things will smooth out over time. I do like how it is sticking to the book for the most part. That makes me happy. I think they did good with the casting. I guess a unexpected turn or event here and there is good for those who have read the series. :) I just can't wait to meet the other characters, especially Eric. :) audra54 Sep 16 2008, 11:48 AM EDT OMG its a TV show. I would much rather they KEEP WATCHING and KEEP COMPLAINING and KEEP THE RATINGS UP, than stop watching altogether. sipsie Sep 16 2008, 12:31 PM EDT I lived in Leesville many years ago, and I have cousins of the Cajun persuasion, and believe me, they are odd even for my family. Their parish built a fence around their property which is bounded on all sides by public roads, and the family joke is that the fence was built to keep them in,lol. They lived pretty much IN the swamp, and a lot of their speech had Cajun accent. If you listen closely enough, and know people from both areas, you can hear distinct similarities between the standard Brooklyn accent, and the accent of New Orleans residents whose families lived close to the docks sound very similar simply because many of the original dock hands came across the Erie Canal to the Ohio River to the Mississippi River to New Orleans, and settled there, bringin' their accents with them to the docks. The point here is that whether y'all like it or not, a certain subsection of the demographic in your area are going to have a very identifiable accent. As a native TEXAN, I will never be able to speak acceptable French (unless I pretend to be Pepe LePew!) because the accents conflict, but my Spanish accent is very good whether I speak Northern Mexico Spanish, Tex-Mex, or Castilian. My Russian, Romany (NOT ROMANIAN) and Yiddish accents are pretty good because I heard a lot of these languages as a child. While visiting in Atlanta, and Gainsville, and Marietta, and Alpharetta GA, I heard a variety of accents from college English professors to folks who'd never been off the farm. sipsie Sep 16 2008, 12:33 PM EDT Truly though, my grandmamå (don't know how that looks, it should be an accented lower case a) lived in Lafayette and called me 'cher' all my life. COnsider too that the accent coaches may not be the greatest in their field; I suspect the complaints will reach Bell and HBO, and the coaches/actors will have to work harder. As for Tara's character, if you were an extremely intelligent young black woman in Bon Tempes LA, you might feel the need to say a lot of expletives yourself. And you can't compare Sookie to Tara in terms of vocabulary. What y'all have missed by not reading the books (some of you) is that SOokie has a word of the day calendar, and tries to work the word of the day into her conversation every day. And there is a lot of detail about Tara that hasn't been enacted yet; I don't want to spoil it for you, but if you want to email me, I will be happy to tell you what it is, and my thoughts on how it happened! And finally, if the accents bother you that much, well, it's that much more bandwidth for the rest of us, and I doubt that there are enough folks who will drop the series on that basis to affect the ratings very much. mrsgillespie Sep 16 2008, 12:44 PM EDT "They need to lose the Tara character. Sookie has had to live in her head all her life and having a best friend that's always there just wouldn't have made sense. Hopefully she'll get a little more comfortable in the role (Tara) and end up not so irritating- or boring (sonehow she's both!). I do like the show a lot. Even though most minnesotans will say they don't know anyone that talks like that since they tend to be exagerated the shows wouldn't be the same without them. I really really hope people here will lighten up and let the show just be what it is and enjoy it, if it's a little over the top then just have a good laugh about it or something Everyone has some sort of an accent and how it sounds can change from one town to the next, from one family to another. Even if you don't notice it someone else will. Everyone has a different ear, you might hear music a bit differently than someone else and the same goes for how you hear someone's accent. Just reading what people here are saying about how they feel about it should prove that. Personally, I am watching the show for the story and I could care less about how bad or good their accents are and I wouldn't let it get to me so much that I eventually just ruin the shows appeal and not like it. What's the point otherwise? sarahchristine Sep 25 2008, 11:08 PM EDT thank you finally someone who gets it. mrsgillespie Sep 26 2008, 1:46 AM EDT "Well, I think they may have totally lost me with the last episode. Who gives a damn about Tara and Lafayette who play such unimportant rolls in the books??!! I actually switched to football during those scenes even though she screwed the boss. Total Crap is about right!!!"They haven't lost me. I have high hopes for this series - I truly love the books. I am sorry that they spend soooo much time on Tara. Such a minor character in the books and yet she's got more airtime than Sookie. I was sad to see Tara sleep with Sam. He's Sookie's knight- very loyal-just don't see him banging her best friend even without strings attached. I know they're building a foundation for the series- just hope they don't spend too much more time on the minor characters. BUT hang in there people! It's a brand new series and from other shows you'll notice that it takes time for actors to "become" their characters. Look at everyone in the 1st series of Six Feet Under compared to the last series. The only reason I gave True Blood a try is because I loved Six Feet Under so much. Now I'm totally obsesses w/ True Blood. I love vampire stories, and yeah Jason's sex-capades are completely over the top...but I love what's going on w/ Bill & Sookie. And for those of you complaining about the accents...it's a show..it's not a documentary. I'm from Chicago and no one here calls the Chicago Bears "Da Bears" LOL Abizzygyrl Oct 13 2008, 6:37 PM EDT m.kenney I understand how you feel about the accents. I'm from Kentucky and we get slammed all the time. However if you can get through it without concentrating on the accent (it's hard I know) the show is actually really good. That's why they put the warning on before the start of all shows....you know nudity, violence, sexual situations, etc......"People from the south probably don't realize they speak this way themselves. Maybe they do. Who cares? (Puns were the highest form of humor.) Stephen Moyer's accent is really impressive considering he's English, and I like how his accent is in accordance with his antebellum age. Moving to south Mississippi, it took a long time for me to even understand some people. I think that some people don't realize how their accent really sounds. I personally believe that they are doing a wonderful job with the accents and acting abilities. Not everyone has the same degree of accent in real life. My best-friend sounds and looks eerily similar to sookie. And, I have less of an accent, meanwhile I know a man that is barely understandable because he is cajun. That's actually one of the most endearing things about TrueBlood. Jason's escapades actually remind me alot of some of the stupid things that my relatives have done that they try to keep secret! I live in the Charlotte area of North Carolina. Since people interact so much nowadays, the more singular accents are not so common anymore until you get into the backwoods. The more isolated, by either class or distance, the more diverse their speech. IncubusDreams Oct 26 2008, 1:35 PM EDT No, I don't live in LA... in fact, I'm CA grown and live in NV... so I don't have much info. Yes, the accents are a bit strong, I agree. Very theatrical. As for "chere"... some do say that. I've only met one or two people from LA, and maybe one of them was cajun, even. But all it is is French. A French endearment. People outside of LA say it a lot... over half the people I know do. I dunno. That's just me. Maybe it's just your part of LA as well, I have no way of knowing. Anna Paquin isn't the best actress, by any stretch. I mean, look what she did to Rogue in the XMen series *shudder* (that entire series is screwed over). But I do enjoy some of her work. As I haven't yet read the books, I don't know how well the casting is... but I find it enjoyable on the whole. The dialogue is very cheesey and extremely lacking in places. But I have to admit, hands down, that Lafayette is the best character there. And I'm an avid Vamp groupie. jasonaddiction Oct 26 2008, 3:44 PM EDT Then just stop watching the show! We're talking about a show featuring vampires, weres, shape shifters, and we're complaining that the ACCENTS aren't genuine? I'm not making fun of anyone, it's just that most of us are sensitive about our accents to some degree. I can tell you that as a native New Yorker, I can discern the difference between a Brooklyn accent and one from Queens but most movies make us all sound like ungrammatical cretins ("dese" and dose") without distinction. I just don't pay attention anymore. Besides, to us Northerners, one Southern accent sounds the same as another, even though I know accents can vary from county to county, let alone state to state. Throw in an occasional "y'all" and I'm ready to fall for anything south of the Mason-Dixon line (even though I know better)! Miz_Fangtasia2011 Oct 26 2008, 10:47 PM EDT umm, you're concentrating wayyy too damn hard on some accents and F.Y.I i know people from LA that actually speaks like that. Dont complain on a fan site....kinna stupid. rysky142 Yesterday, 10:18 AM EST Yes I lived down in the south for ages, but I learned that many people moved down there and so the accents changed considerably. Being from a military family with many Navy and Airforce bases, it's hard to avoid. Therefore, I don't care about the accents. The show is so good that the accents are a minor problem and acctually a true part of the show, how can everyone talk the same when it's a melting pot? When I lived down south I heard all kinds of accents, people don't all talk the same, and that's a fact. rysky142 Yesterday, 10:26 AM EST Don't forget these vampires are supposed to have lived over hundreds of years through hundreds of accents, not just the recent accents duhhhhh, you are supposed to be smart enough to have figured that out. Each person has picked up their own version of how they wish to speak by now. The locals in New Orleans even talk different as I've lived there too, it depends on your ancestry many people have moved there or are stationed there from Military Bases etc. I've heard many different dialects and not all are the same. The show is showing the different dialects. HeatherInSC Yesterday, 12:56 PM EST I find it comical that you actually went through all that trouble to find this site and join it so that you could put this show down based on their dialect. WHO CARES if they don't "sound" like you or your neighbors! Considering that "Bill" is from England and speaks with an English accent normally and "Jason" speaks with an Australian accent, I think they do a FINE job with sounding like they are from the deep south. So relax, and let your imagination run with it! You may actually like it! RedMercury Yesterday, 4:41 PM EST LOL, I love this thread.... points; 1) EVERWHERE people will speak with great irregularity in accents per region per state. 2) The books DO NOT speak of sex in delicate terms but VERY explicit ones - they very use of the words "inside me" automaticly takes you outside the realm of delicate sensibilities. 3) The books are told from a FIRST PERSON PERSPECTIVE, and the Show is told in THIRD PERSON OMNISCIENT, therefore characters like Tara etc, WILL receive more attention than in the books because from a story telling function it builds a better and more realistic emotional terrain that our LEADS exist in - and MAKES SENSE. You know what we would have IF the producers and writers decided to do the Show in First Person like in the books???? Sex in the City , meets Vampires, meets the Bayou. Not exactly Green Light worthy.... Morgaine Yesterday, 6:47 PM EST Hey, everybody - just dropping in to remind y'all that we need to be civil to each other on this site. As far as Paranormal shows go I haven't found anything to dislike with TB (BUT - I am a northerner, so...) The "What if" is different enough, and i think the character development is good. Compared to such crap on a stick as Ghost Wisperer, or HALF the stuff on Sci - Fi network - this show is a blazing star of awesome. lol... Thought last nights show was really good even if I couldn't stand to see Amy so self righteous and all knowing, yet hurting Eddie for her own pleasure. I can't figure out though why this thread is still talking about accents. Things that make you go hmmmm? lol montbriac Today, 5:17 PM EST I've read multiple criticisms from Southerns about the accents on True Blood and it occurs to me that there are nuances to reigional accets that only locals will pick up. As a Yankee, I can tell the difference between a Boston accent and a Brooklyn accent in a New York minute so to speak, but how many people outside the Northeast can do this (particularly in the South)? Likewise, living in the Midwest, I can tell a Chicago accent from Indianapolis or Dubuque, but how many people outside these areas recognize the differences? A very dear friend is from Northern Louisiana and to my ears, he sounds eerily like the accent and cadence in speaking that Lafayette uses. Abizzygyrl Today, 6:27 PM EST "A very dear friend is from Northern Louisiana and to my ears, he sounds eerily like the accent and cadence in speaking that Lafayette uses.At the risk of sounding really immature, that is awesome. I bet it is a little eery! Love Lafayette, he brings such a diverse character to life brilliantly. Sampanther Today, 6:55 PM EST bad acting? come on! please dont even join if you hate the show! booo! Abizzygyrl Today, 7:06 PM EST "bad acting? come on! please dont even join if you hate the show! booo!"Who are you talking to? I'm trying to scroll up... xCaptainMorganx Today, 7:13 PM EST "Who are you talking to? I'm trying to scroll up..."Don't feed the trolls. Yea, you may pay for HBO, but it's choice to cancel it whenever you wish, and it's widely accepted that anyone doesn't like a show, someone that has some sense of rationality, doesn't go off and join a discussion forum to hate on the show unless they have some vendetta against it, which is what trolls do. If you really don't like show, then take your beef up with the writer, director and producers by writing to them personally expressing your feelings - don't come to a "Fan Site" - get it? "Fan" site? don't come here to troll, cuz that's what your doing. rclaurel Today, 7:17 PM EST "As far as HBO goes: OZ, Six Feet Under, and Carnival.ALL I CAN SAY EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN VIEW< AND IF YOU DON"T LIKE IT DONT WATCH, why are you on these boards this is true blood.l rysky142 Today, 7:46 PM EST I'll say this one more time, these are Vampires and Shifters, Werewolves, and people that are not even real we are talking about here. Duhhh and you people are talking about accents? haha They transported themselves to the south after living elsewhere for hundreds of years. Sure there are a few locals, but like others are saying, they are a mix of blacks, french, and other ethnics. Lets lighten up Abizzygyrl Today, 9:19 PM EST "Don't feed the trolls. Was just trying to figure out who Sampanther was referring to. Don't know what's going on at all at this point. Hmmmm xCaptainMorganx 38 minutes ago "Ummm I'm like SO confused. Hmmmm"Sorry, but I wasn't talking directly to you, I was referring to the folks that don't like the show and come here to bash it, which in my opinion is wrong since this is a "FAN" site. Moreso, I was agreeing with you but the less you talk to the trolls the better off we'll all be, so don't be confused. :) Andrianee~ I Love this show, ok, its alittle out there but come on its a show! I live in the south and hear folks with a real think accent it usually becomes thicker the more they drink get over it! Must say so glad Alexander Skarsgard is a part of the show, he is so talented. I must say the best episodes were the ones that Alan Ball wrote, and I wish he would take that back! |
