WINKS & NODS IN TRUEBLOOD Pg 2
Only hardcore fans experience the subtle allusions to the Sookie Stackhouse books that Alan Ball sneaks into the TV series. And while not everyone notices, those who do definitely need to share them with other truly dedicated fans. There's nothing quite like getting in on the latest shout-out, so share your insider knowledge on all things True Blood, Alan Ball, and Charlaine Harris below.

For reference: A "wink" or a "nod" is like a product placement... that is strategically aimed to get a chuckle or kudos from the hardcore bookfans. Also appropriate here would be "easter eggs," which are little clues that are strategically placed, usually for foreshadowing or attention to detail.

Wink or nod:
In Sookie's fantasy, you see piles of books on the stairwell and a pile of books in front of Bill as he is reading. In the books, Bill loves to read (as does Sookie). When Sookie visits Bill's the next day and looks inside there are no books anywhere to be seen.

In the opening credits, there is a brief glimpse of an old Victorian house. It actually the Florentine, an over 100 year old former club and home in Shreveport. Gas Light Players did a Fall Haunted House there in 1999, called House of Terror.

Vampire Downtime: When Bill is waiting to be introduced at the Descendants of the Glorious Dead meeting, he is shown sitting in the kitchen... stone-faced and absolutely motionless and expressionless... that is until he hears (with his vampire super-hearing) Sam and Sookie talking to Gran and it is obvious they have come together, on a date. His eyes flicker with jealousy at the sound of this.

Wink or nod:
Sookie can't really read Sam's thoughts. She says she gets an occasional word or feeling from him, but nothing clear. Sam responds seeming almost insulted, that he must be "just a freak." Book fans know why Sam is sensitive about being a freak.

Wink or nod:
During Bill's alone time he enjoys reading or playing the Wii which is quite funny to picture a Vampire spending his time doing, either doing Sookie or playing the Wii are his normal choices.

Wink or nod:
When Bud Dearborne and Andy Bellefleur arrive at Bill's house to question him about the recent murders, they introduce themselves and Bill reacts to hearing Bellefleur's name. Book fans know why Bill reacts.

Wink or nod:
In Episode 6 Lafayette and Tara were discussing Sookie sleeping upstairs. Tara was wondering whether she should check on Sookie and Lafayette said she is dead to the world. Dead to the World is the title of the 4th book in the series. Pretty sly for the writers to throw that reference in there.

Sookie questioned Bill's weird music.
Bill questioned Eric's weird music.
Jason questioned Amy's weird music.
Is this a play on the eclectic music they use for the credits?

Wink or nod:
In Plaisir d'Amour there is a shot of the bookcase behind Eric's shoulder in his office. The white book is "Dracula" by Bram Stoker. Eric is a huge fan of Dracula in the Halloween short story written by Ms. Harris.

When Bill hallucinates that sookie is being killed, as soon as the sun goes down he runs into her house and shakes her to see if she's alive

He clearly said before that he can not enter the house unless invited yet no one knew he was there until AFTER he was inside the house.

Bill was already invited into the house, so as long as no one rescinds his invitation he can come in whenever he wants.

Wink or nod:
When Bill and Sookie are cuddling in her bed, he tells her that it is a tragedy that she doesn't know just how special she is. As he is saying that he is stroking the upper rim of her ear as well as her hair. Book readers should know why that is prophetic.

Wink or nod:
When Bill takes Jessica to Eric's office and Jessica shuts the door. The back of the door has a sign up for an event called TECHNO BLAST with a picture of a big Tiger on it. Could it have been a E(E)E Special Events - er - event?

Special Events is a division of Extreme(ly Elegant) Events.

ALSO in Eric's office: He has a framed picture of a Viking Longboat on his bookshelf and statues of Viking deities scattered around his office, but the Sword hanging on his wall is NOT Viking in origin. It is Middle Eastern or Indian and from the gilting it is probably a Maharajah's sword.

Wink or nod:
In one of the first episodes, Arlene is going on about the new vamps that came into Merlotte's, saying that she heard they might be from Arkansas in a way that makes that sound like a bad thing. Funny if you know that Charlaine Harris lives in Arkansas.
